Gather here all ye refugees from the foundering ship of JTT, if ye be in need of "How the heck do I format my post?" "Why can't I edit my typos?" "What do those acronyms mean?" and most importantly, "Where is everybody that I used to know?"

Or just to chat randomly.

Ooh, ta.

duc748 · 04/12/2022 16:17

I hope we can hang on here to a bit too. I've read some of the threads in that folder, including the Last Leg one. I usually watch that (or the TV 's on, put it that way), and the Peter Crouch and Stonewall thing gave me pause for thought too. How much longer can they remain the fave charity of the bien pensant media luvvies?

duc748 · 04/12/2022 16:18

France looking good, tass.

TassLeHoff · 04/12/2022 16:20

Giroud's scissor kick goal should have been allowed, IMO.

Dotellhimpike · 04/12/2022 16:33

There is a good story on the Twitters of someone transitioning last month then turning up to a cycling event today. Only for every other competitor to pull out of the race until that person withdrew, which they eventually did. It would be nice to talk about it in more detail but clearly chat is not the folder for it.

PoppySeedBagelRedux · 04/12/2022 16:34

Bint I'd also like another thread like our old one.

I don't know who those scoldy people are, but there are already "cliquey" threads; the Mumsnet Vogue one for a start, which has had meet-ups, and to the outside observer, some Queen Bees. But you can stick around or not.

If you stay, you get to know who people are but it is intimidating at first, and many of them are alarmingly chic.

TassLeHoff · 04/12/2022 16:36

I'm still intimidated by the "Lost" threads on the Old Place...

druscilla · 03/12/2022 10:23

I met Moto in the Blue Posts pub in London many years ago (he won’t remember). Lovely chap

I have also met Moto (more than once, I think), also in the Blue Posts. I have no idea whether I’ve also met you, druscilla (mainly as I don’t know what other names you may have gone by but I may not have been paying attention).

Kucingsparkles · 04/12/2022 16:44

I think we could carry on with a general-blathering thread here in Chat (I'd be happy to start the successor when we reach the end of this one), and then if anybody wants a general-blathering-about-female-issues thread in FWR, that would cover it.

Of course, I also urge everyone to branch out and post. There are so many potential discussions here, I've probably explored about 0.01% of it. Like, I have no clue what MN Vogue is. Plus: agree that more users = more arseholes, but also = more topics and more hilarity and more excellent people too.

duc748 · 04/12/2022 16:49

I remember you, artant. I might remember your name! Does it begin with E?

Tricyrtis2022 · 04/12/2022 16:51

There have been some good gardening threads, though there isn't the continuity of the old place.

There is also the very interesting preppers folder which some of us might find useful. Thinking of Tass there, and me.

duc748 · 04/12/2022 16:49

No, it begins with an A. I would have said confidently that I remember your name but now that I try think of it, it’s completely gone. How odd!

TassLeHoff · 04/12/2022 16:59

Ooh, preppers!

I'm more permaculture, photovoltaics etc nowadays than the typical prepper. But I'll take a look. Thanks!

duc748 · 04/12/2022 16:59

It was a very long time ago! Now we are old and grey. Well, I am.

duc748 · 04/12/2022 17:12

I just had a look at that prepping thread. Begs the question, what are they prepping for? The zombie apocalypse in some cases, it seems.

Tricyrtis2022 · 04/12/2022 17:14

I got the impression most are concerned with food and fuel, but it's always interesting to see what people are doing. There were a couple of good vegetable garden threads running earlier in the year.

Genuine question for experienced mumsnetters - what is the expectation here? Start a new thread for that issue? Or is there a gender wars sport thread? I can’t see it but there are so many threads and I’m still not real sure about searching. In the absence of the sort of overall thread we are used to, I’m not sure where to comment or post things….

It varies. Some do seem to be prepping for Armageddon. But some for bad weather or power cuts (seems to be quite a common type of disruption in certain parts of the UK). Some just to offset increasing food prices and higher cost of living. Some are more along the lines of eco-prepping (reminiscent of the eco-homes thread in the old place). Many prepped for Brexit, out of concern for supply chain disruption - I did, to a moderate extent, and the timing turned out perfect for COVID lockdown because it meant we didn't have to scrum into a shop or supermarket for a good long while.

Tricyrtis2022 · 04/12/2022 17:20

Tass, what sort of permaculture stuff have you got going?

At my main place of work a lot of fruit and nut trees have been put in and there is also 12 acres of woodland, where I'm encouraging fruit to seed and grow, currants and berries mainly. I was standing in the woods one day in late summer and spotted a small yellow plum at my feet. When I looked up I saw the tree was full of beautiful little yellow cherry plums. No idea where it came from, as it wasn't planted, but I was glad to see it there. I love the idea of that wood filling with food-bearing trees.

Kucingsparkles · 04/12/2022 17:23

There's a general convention not to resurrect older threads. And so within reason if there's a newish story and you can't see a relevant thread on the first couple of pages of the board, people tend not to object if you start a new thread.

Of course, there's the risk of getting told off that "there's already a thread about this..." or other duplicate threads situations. But posters basically vote with their feet and threads grow or wilt accordingly.

duc748 · 04/12/2022 17:23

I was the same, Kuc. I've only just used up the last of my pandemic stock of tinned tomatoes and kidney beans. And a shortage of bread flour remains an issue. But Faraday cages seem a step too far for me!

TassLeHoff · 04/12/2022 17:24

Mainly chestnuts and walnuts, with a herb patch near the door, and a veg garden a bit further away.

We've downsized to 3 acres, and I'm also looking at no-till regenerative ag for annual cereals, cover crops etc

artant · 04/12/2022 17:24

duc748 · 04/12/2022 16:59

I’m definitely old and on the way to grey. I think I’d quite like that but to speed up, really.

Tricyrtis2022 · 04/12/2022 17:26

It was bad weather and power cuts that got us interested in being prepared, Kuc. We lived in a village where the electrical cables ran through woodland and the power would go off often if there were high winds. We were wfh in IT at the time and hours long power cuts were a real nuisance, but keeping warm and cooking loomed to the forefront of our minds so we did something to make sure we could both cook and keep warm without electricity.

TassLeHoff · 04/12/2022 17:26

"I love the idea of that wood filling with food-bearing trees"

I managed to convince Monbiot that adding, say, 5% edible perennials that can't be harvested with machinery to his rewilding plans would be a good idea. They're by far the lowest energy/carbon cost of any food source.
