Another thread about heating...
My thermostat showing 13.5 and I'm freezing 🥶

What is your house temperature?

CrispsnDips · 26/11/2022 22:51

16
We are using a lot less gas/electricity this year but we have worked out the cost will be the same as last year (when we had a lovely warm house and used the tumble dryer all the time)

hairymuffet · 26/11/2022 19:40

My other half not very enthusiastic about turning heating on yet, so currently have vest top, extra thermal long sleeved vest, hoodie, oodie and thermal leggings on and sat under a blanket, trying to keep my tongue between my teeth 😉

@hairymuffet

Do YOU want the heating on? Your OH might not be keen, but he's not the only one there & not the only one paying for it.

geres actually no point comparing what others have theirs set at because a) they're not you and them being hit/cold doesn't affect you being hit/cold but even more so because where they have their thermostat & what their house is like means you can't compare. If you put your thermostat in the hall near your front door & set it to 18, the temperature in your sitting room will be much higher. If you put your thermostat in your kitchen with the oven
on, your lounge will be much cooler.

Does that make sense?

13° if the temp is taken where you are sitting is too cold! I'm ok about 16° 15° is alright 14° is chilly, 13° is cold. I like mine about 17° (if my thermostat is near me!)

Dinnerdate1 · 26/11/2022 21:33

About 23/24 I like the house warm enough to be able to just have my pjs on I can't deal with all this layers stuff.

@Dinnerdate1 where is your thermostat?

Boxin · 26/11/2022 22:57

18 hearings been off since 9.
Luckily my house seems to keep the jest quite well. Have the heating clock on at 18 for a couple of hours morning and evening and that seems ok for now.

SkylightSkylight · 26/11/2022 22:59

Nectarpeach · 26/11/2022 19:44

16.8°c and I'm melting, just opened a window

Where is your thermostat compared to you & your radiators?

It's annoying when the comments about people being 'proud' or 'competitive' keep popping up in every thread on heating. Not everyone has money to burn on 20 degree heating all day.

Quite. Imagine your take home is £1800, you have kids to feed and a mortgage, council tax and tell me how you would find £500 pm for fuel bills? Simple maths dictates that some family have a set income and all monthly out goings must fit into that budget. It's just maths.

Like my friend telling me once how she could never live in a non detached house. She would having fun to offord that on minium wage. It's not a choice to be on lower end of the pay scale. It's like telling a cleaner to earn more by becoming a doctor. Some reality check has to figure into that statement.

If you simpley can't understand it, your very lucky to be so far removed from the reality of life of the poorest people in this country. My friend is disabled so can no longer work. You would possibly faint at what she can't afford.

PinkSyCo · 26/11/2022 23:02

18.1 in my bedroom right now. I have my window open a bit, am wearing a T-shirt and leggings lying under a summer duvet and am nice and toasty. I’ve not had to put the heating on at all yet.

fitflopqueen · 26/11/2022 23:04

Currently about 21. Only turned heating on yesterday as family round this weekend, has been around 17 downstairs and 14-15 on bedroom prior to this. Will be turning CH off again tomorrow.
Happy to light log burner every afternoon when home alone until it gets really cold.

pompei8309 · 26/11/2022 23:06

Does your other half dictates whatever you want to do? is this a joke?

Shadowboy · 26/11/2022 23:06

22.5 but that’s because the wood burner is going. Upstairs is 18.5

thermostat comes on at 19 degrees but never comes on if one of the log burners is on. We have two log burners- one at each end of the house.

Catlady2021 · 26/11/2022 23:07

The trouble is if you don’t turn your heating on, you can get mould and condensation inside.
I know heating is expensive, I turn mine on for an hour in the morning and maybe an hour in the evening.

Dinnerdate1 · 27/11/2022 00:53

On the wall downstairs in the hallway. Why?

Dinnerdate1 · 27/11/2022 00:54

@SkylightSkylight I replied above forgot to @ you

mondaytosunday · 27/11/2022 01:53

Ive set the thermostat at 18 (put it on about a week ago) and it's in a warm room off the kitchen so some of the upstairs are quite a bit colder. It comes on and off throughout the day, hardly at all if it's sunny out.
My daughter has an electric fan for her loft room to top the temp up when she's at her desk during the weekend.

hairymuffet · 27/11/2022 08:17

No. This is not a joke, my other half does not dictate what i can and cant do. We can't afford to put the heating on yet . The thermostat is in the lounge, no where near a door or window , it's on the dining table

Mine is set at 18 during the day as I am up and down doing stuff so don't want it too warm, I put it up to 20 each evening for sitting watching TV and stuff

lobsterkiller · 27/11/2022 08:47

16.5, I've put the heating on to 18.

When will you put it on and set to what temperature? I'd rather have mine at 15 all winter than 18 just December to February and 13 or less otherwise. If I could only afford 15 for three months then yes, I'd be holding out for now.

Foolsandtheirmoney · 26/11/2022 20:52

You are talking about people talking about heating what does that make you?

A bit of a pillock

Fuwari · 27/11/2022 11:26

I did the experiment of is it better to be on a lower temp 24/7 or to have it off and on in smaller bursts. I wfh so I am here all the time.

Week one I had it on 20 for an hour in the am, couple of hrs evening, off the rest of the time. I was freezing and miserable and spent most of the time huddled under a heated throw. My days were kind of wasted as I felt too cold to do much. Obviously it was fine when the heating was on, but as soon as it was off the temperature reduced pretty rapidly.

Week two I had it on 18, 24/7. This turned out to be both cheaper (which is obviously significant) and much more comfortable. There was just a couple of evenings that 18 still felt a bit nippy, but was fine then to use the heated throw on the sofa as I was just sat watching tv anyway. 18 in the day was fine and I was much more productive.

So that is what I’m sticking to now. You have to experiment. As I think it very much depends on house type, whether any ones in during the day etc. I think that’s why the consensus on which way is better has never been clear cut.

Hollyhead · 27/11/2022 11:28

@Fuwari i recommend looking at how insulated your house is, it should be able to maintain a temperature above 18 for quite a few hours if you initially heat it to 20. It sounds like you lost the heat quite rapidly.

BeyondThinkOfTheOptics · 27/11/2022 11:30

My house did its hour of heating 7-8am, and the temp in the living room is now 17.9'c

Fuwari · 27/11/2022 11:50

@Hollyhead

Its not well insulated at all. I have single glazed sash windows, high ceilings etc. So it doesn’t hold heat all that well. It holds cold a lot better! But it’s rented from an HA so there’s not much I can do about it. I do have thick curtains up everywhere. Carpet, rugs etc to try and keep it warmer. That’s why I say though, I think it does depend on house type. A new build would hold the heat a lot better.

Hollyhead · 27/11/2022 12:53

@Fuwari that is very difficult, and interesting. Ours is much newer, but still old enough to have the odd crack around windows wtc. I do recommend sellotape over any airy crack possible, it makes a difference.

SkylightSkylight · 27/11/2022 16:19

Dinnerdate1 · 27/11/2022 00:54

@SkylightSkylight I replied above forgot to @ you

@Dinnerdate1
just because if it's in a hallway etc, the heat will be even higher in the lounge etc because the thermostat will be getting any cool air brough in or wafted past it, so the heating is on longer to get the thermostat to the temperature you've set it to.

you must like it really toasty, 🤣. I'd melt in that & me sitting naked is not a sight anyone needs to see!
