House temperature

Another thread about heating...
My thermostat showing 13.5 and I'm freezing 🥶

What is your house temperature?

OP posts:
Dallyo · 26/11/2022 20:42

I can survive at 13.5 and have done. Kids too (just get into bed with their electric blankets on).

The temp isn’t the problem, it’s the mould which will get you.

If I leave my house under 14 degrees for more than a few weeks the mould literally appears overnight. Behind furniture, in the ceiling corners, behind curtains. I pulled a suitcase out and it was covered in mould.

Staying warm is only part of the issue

VenusStarr · 26/11/2022 20:44

16.5. We've set it so the heating comes on if the thermostat goes below 16. It was going down to 14 which was horrible. We also started to get black spots on the ceiling in our bedroom which is grim. It's actually not cost much more to have it constantly at 16. I've boosted it to 17.5 a couple of times and it's been fine and no more black spots.

TheTeddyBears · 26/11/2022 20:44

19.5 heating been off for about an hour or so now don't think I'll put it bk on tonight now just out dressing gown on if I'm cold.
I couldn't cope with 13.5! I don't think I've ever seen like that low. It was 16 this morning and that's so cold to me!

midsomermurderess · 26/11/2022 20:44

I heard someone describe talking about your heating as being the equivalent of talking about your dreams or what route you took to get from your house to your destination, long deemed to be the preserve of crashing bores. Ladies, you are the crashing bores of the internet.

Xenia · 26/11/2022 20:47

I sleep with the window open and no heating on every night but at this very moment there room where I am is 25C (I have a thermometer) - heating on and our system has no thermostat. It goes off at 10.30pm. It does not need to be as high as this but is not easy to control.

GeorgeorRuth · 26/11/2022 20:48

There's a thread about damp/ mould in houses running, yet on here it's competitive underheating.
Houses start to feel damp once they are cold.

Our thermostat is set at 17. The heating keeps kicking in for short spells. I don't have a thermometer to check, though. DH is disabled and fairly immobile/ inactive, so I can't switch it off anyway, but I can't afford to overheat. He has a throw/ blanket in case he gets chilly. I'm currently watching tv in pj's in the front room. Not chilly at all.

Wbeezer · 26/11/2022 20:50

Mine is usually about 12 at the moment! We do put the stove on in the evening but we have a large old house and slightly inadequate heating and have to put the heating on for agree just to get the temp up to a level that is still not exactly coat so not worth the expense just to be able swap thick jumper for a lighter one!
On the plus side our house was a very pleasant temp during the heatwave, could still sleep under a duvet and only had to put the butter in the fridge for about a week!

Wbeezer · 26/11/2022 20:50

Ages not agree

You are talking about people talking about heating what does that make you?

NewBootsAndRanty · 26/11/2022 20:55

I'm exploring a whole new world of minimum house temperatures this year (got COPD this year) and it's really opening my eyes as to how much I've been underheating for years - unfortunately the "stick on extra layers and use a heated throw" approach doesn't warm the air around me.

It's looking like I'll have used the same amount of gas this month as I did last January, and twice as much as last November.

Newpuppymummy · 26/11/2022 20:56

17.5. We haven’t had the heating on today but have had the fire on

BeyondThinkOfTheOptics · 26/11/2022 20:57

BeyondThinkOfTheOptics · 26/11/2022 19:58

Right now it's 18.4'c and the heating went off two hours ago. I'm bloody boiling 🥵

An hour later and it's still 18.2'c! (and the heating went off at 6pm) Must be insulated better than I thought 😮

CheapWine · 26/11/2022 20:58

18 here, I’m laid in bed on MN and toasty and warm in a short sleeved nightie.

it’s colder downstairs in the hall though.

namechange3394 · 26/11/2022 20:59

18.7 and I've had to take my jumper off cos I'm too hot!

But 13.5 is seriously chilly OP, just turn the heating on. It's not just up to your partner, (assuming you live together at least!)

TheTurn0fTheScrew · 26/11/2022 20:59

17.5.
I've had to relax a bit about using the heating after spending a good chunk of today cleaning mould from the wall and down the back of a storage unit in the bathroom. Maybe in a newer, better insulated house you can get away with less, but I'm in an old Victorian semi with damp tenancies.

Outofnowhere · 26/11/2022 21:01

20.5

I had the heating on for an hour earlier and it’s still warm.

IWantToBeACat · 26/11/2022 21:03

11.1...

username8888 · 26/11/2022 21:03

18 in the week and a joyous 19 at the weekend.

My other half not very enthusiastic about turning heating on yet, so currently have vest top, extra thermal long sleeved vest, hoodie, oodie and thermal leggings on and sat under a blanket, trying to keep my tongue between my teeth 😉

You say your partner isn't wanting to turn in the heating but you don't say what you want to do?

I refuse to be cold in my own home unless I was in dire straits and really struggling. I wouldn't allow Dh to tell me if I could or couldn't be warm at home.

kittykat222 · 26/11/2022 21:13

22 but the heating has been on.

Hollyhead · 26/11/2022 21:20

17.5, which feels fine with a blanket - the air feels plenty warm enough breathing. It’s been dropping to 14 overnight but haven’t been cold in bed. Typically having heating on for an hour in the morning and an hour in the evening. We’re on oil which was £1000 for the tank but haven’t used very much yet with this approach.

Calmdown14 · 26/11/2022 21:22

I suspect that a lot of these thermometers are not very accurate or are in wildly different places.

13 is cold. Your house must be very thermally inefficient

Does your other half pay the entire heating bill?

pimlicoanna · 26/11/2022 21:27

20

pimlicoanna · 26/11/2022 21:28

No heating on
