How much have you ‘spent’ to mitigate CoL?

Seems ironic doesn’t it that in order to save money many of us are spending it!

I’ve bought a dehumidifier and about to get an air fryer in the sale. Both have other uses/benefits and will be good long term but I probably wouldn’t have bought them had energy prices not risen so high. £300 already for me.

How much have you spent to make things cheaper?

I bought kuddlys for the family so approx £110 on special offer.
Already had a dehumidifier but it has stopped working so need a new one, think the one I have cost £240. But that isn't specifically because of cost of living its because we have an old house.

sneezingpandamum · 23/11/2022 08:44

Well my STBEXH leaving has actually saved a surprising amount - I didn't realise how much extra energy another adult in the home uses 😂 not to mention the food and fuel bill!

(Obviously divorce costs and one less income is financially harder though!)

WeDontNeedToTalkAboutJamie · 23/11/2022 08:46

£0 because I can't afford to. I am being sent some free electric blankets from my energy company though.

£8 on wool to crochet a blanket. It was in the reduction bin. Last year after Christmas I did buy a hot water bottle for everyone, they were reduced to a couple of quid each though so not too bad.

AuntieMarys · 23/11/2022 08:47

Nothing...got airfryer and heated throw with vouchers we already had.

TheFlis12345 · 23/11/2022 08:50

About £70 on 2 heated throws, plus DH bought some thermals which cost £50 but would have been useful to have any way.

MuggleMe · 23/11/2022 08:51

Heated throw £80 and worth every penny, I'm so cosy WFH and its equivalent to 2 weeks commuting costs.

WhatTeaspoon · 23/11/2022 08:53

Nothing, I already had an air fryer, I open my windows so don’t need a humidifier and I already own a very thick warm hooded dressing gown.

squashyhat · 23/11/2022 08:56

A lot. New windows and new woodburner with associated costs of chimney lining etc. We would probably have done both within the next year though so just brought forward.

123ZYX · 23/11/2022 09:06

Thousands - we've ordered solar panels. It was something we'd been weighing up for a while, but the increased electricity costs made the decision for us

miceonabranch · 23/11/2022 09:08

We bought an air fryer before the cost of them increased. We're seeing big savings now that we're not using the oven.

Dh bought a lot of ultra low wattage lightbulbs to replace our standard low wattage ones.

Woolandwonder · 23/11/2022 09:09

Heated blanket £40 (although was a birthday present) although it stopped working last week just before it got really cold which is super annoying.
Dehumidifier £50 Already have some damp in our house so trying to prevent it getting worse.

ememem84 · 23/11/2022 09:09

Spent £11k on flights to New Zealand for most of December and January to avoid worst of the cold…..

that’s a joke. I mean we did spend that on economy flights (curse you covid making travel stupid expensive and curse you covid closing borders meaning we now have to pay for both kids!) this is a long planned trip and was meant to happen in 2020. Then pushed to 2021. And now 2022.

I don’t need to buy new winter coats for the kids though.

Dotdotdot19 · 23/11/2022 09:13

I spent roughly £100 pounds mainly on wool socks, gloves and blankets for DD and I but I'm not sure I wouldn't have done it anyway. We already had things like oodies and hot water bottles although DD did get a new cover for hers as she is hyperfixated on Pandas at the moment.

I keep debating an airfryer but I'm not convinced I'll use it enough to justify it.

Happierwithouthim · 23/11/2022 09:14

Love it em

Unforgettablefire · 23/11/2022 09:15

Only my electric throw so far. I got it from argos and it's saved me so much money despite being £100. I went for the better one as I got it on interest free credit, and I'm prepay for gas and electric and already it's more than paid for itself.
Thinking of a dehumidifier but the cheapest one in argos that's suitable is £130. Then the cost of running it so I don't know.

ivykaty44 · 23/11/2022 09:15

£44 on two airers

i have a slow cooker I’ve been using instead of the oven, it’s about 10 years old.

I’ve stoped using the the tumble dryer and by now have broken even on the two airers

purchased an air fryer as a Xmas present for dd and sil so they will save without the outlay and I spent same as normal

SunflowerSmith · 23/11/2022 09:17

Nothing, I already had a couple of air fryers, heated throws and hot water bottles.

I've actually saved money by being more careful with lights and central heating plus buy what food I need and not fill the basket with junk, it's really bought it home to me how wasteful I was before.

Talia99 · 23/11/2022 09:19

A lot - electric blanket, electric throw, air fryer, oodie, thermal leggings (several pairs), thermal socks (ditto), foil for behind the radiators.

I don’t expect to make the money back this year but if bills stay high for several years (which I am expecting), I will.

Talia99 · 23/11/2022 09:20

I forgot - several pairs of fingerless gloves and a room thermometer to check the temperature.

Mrstumbletap · 23/11/2022 09:22

Honestly £0

Just been making sure I put on my bed socks under my boot slippers, and use our big blankets on the couch, sometimes 2 or 3.

I have been letting my little dog sleep under the cover as she is like my hot water bottle.

Lights on only in the room you are in.

Use the microwave and grill more than the oven.

Actually haven't found the bills too bad tbh, seems like a crime to say that but it's been fine.

DrMarciaFieldstone · 23/11/2022 09:23

I bought a £50 fryer after deliberating for while, and love it, we hardly use the oven now.

Otherwise, I buy in bulk more, but I’m acutely aware it’s a privilege to be able to spend more upfront, for much better value in the long run. It must be so difficult for many. This goes for food, washing products, even car insurance or boiler cover etc - everything is cheaper if you can afford to pay more upfront.

Happierwithouthim · 23/11/2022 09:24

About €3.50 on hooks to put up clothesline in shed, clothesline was leftover from previous whirly that broke during the summer.

Ciri · 23/11/2022 09:24

I’ve bought six powercut lightbulbs that stay on when the power goes out. That was £60.

we’ve also got solar panels going in on Monday (although we ordered then last year) £12,000 (but on interest free credit)

wodburner in my office was £2,500 but I have free wood so that really will save money

Happierwithouthim · 23/11/2022 09:26

I already had airfryer
I've been mindful of what I spend on everything since my separation and divorce so I didn't have much more that I could cutback
