How much have you ‘spent’ to mitigate CoL?

Seems ironic doesn’t it that in order to save money many of us are spending it!

I’ve bought a dehumidifier and about to get an air fryer in the sale. Both have other uses/benefits and will be good long term but I probably wouldn’t have bought them had energy prices not risen so high. £300 already for me.

How much have you spent to make things cheaper?

I’ve bought six powercut lightbulbs that stay on when the power goes out. That was £60.

we’ve also got solar panels going in on Monday (although we ordered then last year) £12,000 (but on interest free credit)

wodburner in my office was £2,500 but I have free wood so that really will save money

In my house almost 18 months and the only powercut was during the night last weekend. Bf house is often without electricity so I'll get him some of these.

HotChicolate · 23/11/2022 14:22

Nothing we are fortunate to already have solar panels, an electric car and be on a really good energy fix until September 24.

LunaLoveLemon · 23/11/2022 14:24

Nothing. We’re not well off enough to make big purchases at the moment. Seems to be the worst off who will suffer most (not us, we’re ok, just not with spare cash) as per usual.

£7.50 on 3 little hygrometer/thermometer things for the bedrooms to keep and eye on temp and humidity. Already have a dehumidifier, airfryer and an instant pot. Have thought about heated throws but with 5 of us in the house I'd rather just have the heating on a few hours a day as the house and cats need heat and 5 throws but be over £200!

Christmas presents are including warm socks and a new dressing gown for DH.

kateandme · 23/11/2022 15:45

SkylightSkylight · 23/11/2022 10:18

@kateandme no, they're incredible cheap to run 1-2 p per hour and most people seem to say you only need them on for a short while. Nothing at all like putting the central heating on.

Ah right thank you. I wanted to get one and someone said “don’t be silly” because of the electric usage 😔

lobsterkiller · 23/11/2022 16:03

@Talia99 Yes I do. I bought a pair in the summer (mega cheap in a heat wave.) They are worth it for the heat and also they don't make feet sweaty.

I think I paid £35 in the sale for them.

KleineDracheKokosnuss · 23/11/2022 16:04

£40 heated throw and £12.50 door curtain.

we’re also getting solar - but that was happening anyway and though it will help with CoL on the day to day, it isn’t happening because of CoL.

GettinHyggeWithIt · 23/11/2022 16:05

Some good ideas on here as well as interesting to see what people have invested in, or already had. Think I might look at some LED bulbs.

Also bought smaller bath towels. Used to have bath sheets but they just take too long to dry.

A new hot water bottle !
Already have a heated throw (got it last year) but have persuaded my Mum to get one as she's single and retired and she loves it.
I hadn't heard of power cut lightbulbs... going to investigate now!

What we really need is new insulation in the (damp) loft but can't afford it right now!

MarshaBradyo · 23/11/2022 16:19

Nothing yet. I try to avoid spending on the back of campaigns eg power cuts, heatwaves etc

So I’ve avoided air con, air fryers, gas stoves discussed on here

Bookaholic73 · 23/11/2022 16:23

I bought my son a heated throw and thick PJs from Primark. Already have an air fryer, but am considering a dehumidifier.
In the next year or so I’m sure it will make a huge difference to my energy bills.

I’ve already gone from being £100 in credit with electricity, to over £500 in credit. We barely put the heating on now. My older son as sensory issues and cannot regulate his temperature. He would have the heating on in the height of summer.

With his new PJs, and heated throw, he is now asking us to turn the heating off!

RewildingAmbridge · 23/11/2022 16:23

Electric under blanket £100 in August, superking size so not easy to find one to fit. Same one is now£175 . £160 on logs £45 on kindling. That'll see us through winter, we've only had the heating on over the last week because of the log burner. £29 giant faux fur throw from Aldi plus extra fluffy socks do about £10 there. Yet it's the people who can't afford those things who are struggling the most. I just begrudge giving gas/oil companies more money

RewildingAmbridge · 23/11/2022 16:25

Unexpected side effect of the electric blanket is that both DH and I are getting to sleep much quicker. Something so comforting about them

CombatBarbie · 23/11/2022 17:51

Nothing yet, kids are getting electric throws for Xmas. But we have qualified for energy funding (child benefit is one of the eligible entry) so we are getting 70mm insulation on the external walls that are not yet insulated, air source heat pump with all new radiators and solar panels that work with sun and moon!!

Insulation being done this week and then air pump starts next week and then solar panel fitting week after.

The target areas are the rural/semi rural running off oil at the minute.

GlumShoe · 23/11/2022 18:12

We bought a heated airer to save on using the dryer on rainy days. That was £45. I bought myself a flask because I run on tea in the evenings and it would save reboiling the kettle, that was £8 and I bought a 3 pack of hot water bottles for £10.
We always wrap up in the winter anyway and have loads of throws, teddy bedding for everyone, thermal base layers and warm PJs, socks, hats, scarfs and gloves, so I didn't have much to buy.

Riverlee · 23/11/2022 18:17

Ninjaair fryer (although don’t love it).

Oodies for dc for Christmas (one lives in his own flat, the other one is always cold.) Not sure whether they’ll wear them though).

JimJamJolly · 23/11/2022 18:18

£10 on a Chewbacca onesie off eBay!
Actually bought it for me to wear for a Star Wars themed fancy dress party, but in the meantime (and afterwards) my son is using it as an extra layer for the evenings.

essaytwenty · 23/11/2022 18:28

with all new radiators and solar panels that work with sun and moon!!

Good luck getting any usable energy from the moon.

Believeitornot · 23/11/2022 18:30

So far, I’ve only bought some extra blankets. We already have hot water bottles, oil filled radiators to just heat one room when it’s bitterly cold and I’m WFH.

But I have stopped buying lunches/coffees from pret and buying cheaper cuts of meat and less takeaways etc.

timetogetlost · 23/11/2022 18:37

£250 on wood.

@essaytwenty your clearly not up to date on PV solar panels..... 😉

JennyForeigner · 23/11/2022 19:14

We bought extra layers for all - cheap oodie knock-offs and so on as you are all so keen on them and when I realised I wouldn't have to spend half my life doing up my dressing gown belt, sold!

Upped our roof insulation which was an overdue task, and we ordered secondary glazing for some very crocky but listed windows today. Also replaced the disgusting stuffed plastic bags which we realised had been used to block our chimneys with proper chimney sheep.

I had a couple of decent long curtains in store and just ordered insulating fabric to stitch into them and will hang over our back door with catflap. The cat doesn't use it any more, he considers it beneath his dignity.

Almost £1,000 imho but it was all overdue and we are lucky to be able to do it.

essaytwenty · 23/11/2022 19:38

Please enlighten me. Bearing in mind that even in perfect conditions the moon reflects about two million times less energy than the sun radiates.

SundayAtDevilDirt · 23/11/2022 20:51

£70 on a slow cooker but we'd kept meaning to get round to it since our old one broke about 3 years ago.
