How much have you ‘spent’ to mitigate CoL?

Seems ironic doesn’t it that in order to save money many of us are spending it!

I’ve bought a dehumidifier and about to get an air fryer in the sale. Both have other uses/benefits and will be good long term but I probably wouldn’t have bought them had energy prices not risen so high. £300 already for me.

How much have you spent to make things cheaper?

OP posts:

2 x Primark Fake Oodies @£20 each
Hot water bottle @£5
Chimney swept and checked @£45
Fire grate, tools and ash pan thing @£30 approx
Kindling and smokeless eco fuel stuff @£30, will need a cheaper source of fuel. Someone promised us endless seasoned wood but appears to have retracted that offer, fair enough they have probably decided to keep it or sell it and dont blame them

DialsMavis · 23/11/2022 11:37

We also had loads of insulation added to downstairs under floors when we were forced to replace them last year. We were going to sand and varnish floor boards but they were all completely knackered and had woodworm. In hindsight I am pleased that was the case

MintJulia · 23/11/2022 11:45

Over the last 10 years I've spent 000s on insulation, new roof, new windows, front door, wood burner etc.

But this year, two new sweaters to wear wfh. New wool throws for the beds.

Otherwise nothing. I already had a slow cooker. I'm just using it much more.

I bought some sheepskin slippers, I've already done as much as I can to mitigate the CoL issue before the CoL was a thing.

I can't really cut back anymore, unless I just don't use any heat and that will only cause damp etc.

@lobsterkiller, do you find sheepskin slippers be worth it? I’ve been considering getting some but they look expensive.

Idratherbepaddleboarding · 23/11/2022 12:12

Nothing as we already have an air fryer, fake oldies, hot water bottles etc.

geraniumsandsunshine · 23/11/2022 12:27

What is CoL?

applesandpears33 · 23/11/2022 12:27

@Talia99 I have sheepskin boots from Costco which I think were about £35 delivered. They are very warm and go half way up my shins. I'd looked at sheepskin slippers and boots elsewhere but they were very expensive and these seemed more reasonable.

Swissnotswiss · 23/11/2022 12:35

Nothing. I'm tempted by an air fryer but I've got nowhere to out it and I'm not sure I would save that much as I don't use the oven more than once or twice a week.

CakeCrumbs44 · 23/11/2022 12:38

We had an air fryer which my mum gave us but she asked for it back so we did buy one of those - about £40.
£10 on two hot water bottles
£14 on a thicker duvet for DD5 although I would have bought that anyway, not just because of saving heating.

Yarrawonga · 23/11/2022 12:40

Nothing, apart from firewood we had in store anyway. We held back on the central heating so that it won’t cost us any more overall than last year.

Have managed to resist the current air fryer frenzy.

applesandpears33 · 23/11/2022 12:43

I have bought two pairs of sheepskin slippers and two Comfy oodie style jumpers from Costco and spent around £130. I expect them all to last several years though and hope they will help us to save money in the long run as I don't need to have the heating on quite as much.

Buteverythingsfine · 23/11/2022 12:46

£100 on two heated throws for two teens, they love them and have stopped moaning about cold! I do have the heating on though, but it got us to early Nov without and only occasional use now.

tara66 · 23/11/2022 12:47

Fluffy dressing gowns are very warm! Also - thermal socks!

daisyjgrey · 23/11/2022 12:51

I bought three bags of tea lights in IKEA rather than two?

bloodyeverlastinghell · 23/11/2022 12:51

Ex kindly bought all the children electric blankets for their beds, I have bought cashmere finger less gloves (seconds I blame mumsnet) and a few woolly jumpers 2nd hand though. So about £50 plus Extra fluffy blankets for dcs beds maybe 100 all in. I have a dehumidifier already. I’ve made a move from central heating to burning wood which is cheaper than oil too.

We changed our vented tumble dryer for a heat pump one earlier than we'd have otherwise done. Also got a heated undeblanket and a couple of heated throws. We might have got those anyway though, as was the case with my new cosy slippers.

Thatsasmashingblouseyouvegoton · 23/11/2022 12:57

Already had:
Heated throw
Electric blanket
Oil filled radiator
Oodies
Fingerless cashmere gloves
Heated airer
Candles
Led lights
Power banks
Solar lamp
Wind up radio
Camping stove

Bought:
Air fryer
Heat pump time dryer
New more efficient washing machine

Would like:
A dehumidifier

Shitfather · 23/11/2022 12:58

Bought myself and DS and myself oodies for 40 quid. Still not switched on the hearing as a result.

I’ve bought six powercut lightbulbs that stay on when the power goes out. That was £60.

we’ve also got solar panels going in on Monday (although we ordered then last year) £12,000 (but on interest free credit)

wodburner in my office was £2,500 but I have free wood so that really will save money

Oooh where are the bulbs from please?

You can get them on Amazon. Just type in emergency power cut bulbs. There are two different types, one type has a little button that you press when there’s a power but and the bulb comes on (so ok for lamps but a pain for overhead lights), the other type just stays on if there is a power cut. They effectively have a rechargeable battery in them which charges when the light is on and then can stay alight when the power goes off.

Very good for elderly relatives

ememem84 · 23/11/2022 13:58

Thank you! I’m sooo buying these!
