How much have you ‘spent’ to mitigate CoL?

Seems ironic doesn’t it that in order to save money many of us are spending it!

I’ve bought a dehumidifier and about to get an air fryer in the sale. Both have other uses/benefits and will be good long term but I probably wouldn’t have bought them had energy prices not risen so high. £300 already for me.

How much have you spent to make things cheaper?

At the start of lockdown I got these and they are so warm, best thing I’ve bought in a long time

I feel the cold a lot while working at home and these really are great

About £160 ish. I bought an air fryer back in September on a v good deal for about £130 (should have been around £300). Earlier in the year I bought a slow cooker in the aldi sale for £15 we had been consider this anyway so wasn't part due to 'COL' but it did make me actually buy one.

I've also bought some of those underwear hangers with all the pegs on and a few over door hooks for hanging clothes hangers probably about £10 in total but I haven't used the dryer yet. Whereas I'd probably put all underwear in the dryer all the time, as not enough space or pegs on the line so I've already saved that money.

I also bought a curtain from the charity shop to cover the front door, it was about £6 I needed to adjust it and add some velcro as we can't put up a curtain rail, but already had the velcro from a previous project, so just a few evenings of sewing.

80 on a high tech ultra lite heat trapping vest thing from Rab, half price in summer sale.
100 on a lakeland heated poncho

Designed to keep me warm when wfh and can't put the heating on in day.

Not actually been cold enough yet to try them!

with all new radiators and solar panels that work with sun and moon!!

Good luck getting any usable energy from the moon.

I think the pp was maybe joking? They have recently (literally this year) invented a way to make solar panels generate some power at night but its not through moonlight its by harnessing the very small amount of energy they release as they cool down after a hot day. Moonlight can only generate a miniscule amount of energy. Shining a large torch on the panel would have the same effect. It wouldn't produce enough for the inverter to kick in anyway.

If the pp wasn't joking then she's been conned

essaytwenty · 23/11/2022 22:51

Reading it again, I think you may be right.

It went right over my head.

kateandme · 24/11/2022 06:06

I’d suggest to anyone too to go to a proper sports, ski shop and get a ski wear woolen headband.they are so brilliant at keeping your head warm and you can wear them generally anytime.so it doesn’t feel like your having to walk around the house with a wooly hat on.

notdaddycool · 24/11/2022 06:13

Spent about £1k on insulating sons ceiling ( can’t get to the roof space above). Also about 4k on new windows. Will spend another £1k ish on building and insulation.I guess it will take years to pay back savings but I still feel it’s worth it for the planet in the long term.

AutumnCrow · 24/11/2022 06:14

I wonder if I can rig the exercise bike up to a dynamo-powered dehumidifier?

Then I can pedal furiously at wet laundry on airers.

Puddywoodycat · 24/11/2022 07:13

30 quid on a little camping's stove with gas bottle and a kettle in case of power cuts but also for picnics next year.
.I feel better knowing we could have a hot drink and hot water bottles should power be cut.

We already have some electric blankets from last year.
I already had a air fryer from when our oven broke two years ago. .
We got a new kitchen recently and supposedly have a good rated a plus energy saving oven.
But I don't use it much at all.

We have an induction hob,I'm not sure how much that costs.

We already have low energy bulbs.

I'm definitely going to buy a dehumidifier but they are all out of stock.

Puddywoodycat · 24/11/2022 07:15

@DeathMetalMum

How did you attach the Velcro please, do you have to take it off every time use door?

Snowpaw · 24/11/2022 07:18

£4.5k on solar panels (though the decision was an environmental one as well as cost of living related and I would have done it anyway I think)

£200 on a custom made curtain to hang across the front door to stop the draughts.

a few warm clothes.

MsLucyEyelesbarrow · 24/11/2022 07:26

We have bought:
Extra curtains to use as insulation from a charity shop.
A new clothes Rail for drying indoors (that has already paid for itself from reduced tumbler use)
Two new sock driers to hang inside
An Oodie-type top from a charity shop
A halogen cooker (freecycle) which is fab. It is cheaper that using the oven, though not quite as cheap as an air fryer, but since I didn’t pay for it, it’s still a saving.
A pressure cooker. Again, trying to reduce oven time. I’m frequently cooking for six-eight people, so I bought a big one. It’s brilliant.

one tip I found when travelling years ago is to get a long length of muslin and use that as a towel. It dries really quickly. Any old cotton fabric can be used the same way.

DeathMetalMum · 24/11/2022 07:28

@Puddywoodycat The velcro had a sticky back so I just stuck it to the upvc door frame. I had to sew it to the curtain which was difficult due to the adhesive on the velcro - no sewing machine. We do have to put it up and down for use, however we use the back door more than the front and generally put the curtain up in the evening and take it down in the day time to allow some air flow anyway. Not as simple as a curtain & rail but it works.

AndSoFinally · 24/11/2022 07:42

£23k on new double glazing. Should pay for itself by about 2052 😆

(Definitely needed though, the drafts were Biblical)

Yarrawonga · 24/11/2022 09:11

I wonder if I can rig the exercise bike up to a dynamo-powered dehumidifier?

We have a rowing machine with a big fan on the end. Perhaps try one of those next to the airer.

daffodilandtulip · 24/11/2022 14:51

£2k log burner. A home improvement I've wanted forever. It was a "now or never" moment when all this kicked off.

Average cost of logs is less that half what we were paying in gas so will take a year or so to make it worthwhile but it's there forever now.

We bought extra layers for all - cheap oodie knock-offs and so on as you are all so keen on them and when I realised I wouldn't have to spend half my life doing up my dressing gown belt, sold!

Upped our roof insulation which was an overdue task, and we ordered secondary glazing for some very crocky but listed windows today. Also replaced the disgusting stuffed plastic bags which we realised had been used to block our chimneys with proper chimney sheep.

I had a couple of decent long curtains in store and just ordered insulating fabric to stitch into them and will hang over our back door with catflap. The cat doesn't use it any more, he considers it beneath his dignity.

Almost £1,000 imho but it was all overdue and we are lucky to be able to do it.

Just tried the oodie knock-off for the first time. So warm!

Absolute gamechanger 😄
