OVERPRICED ELECTRICIAN

OPINIONS PLEASE! SORRY IT'S LONG-WINDED!

I had an electrician round this morning (won't mention his name).
Was supposed to be here at 9 and at 9.30 I texted to see if he was still coming, and he replied that he'd be here about an hour later.
Nice of him to let me know.
Not a good start.
I've have had him to do work before and he was good.

I needed a fluorescent tube replacing under a wall unit in the kitchen. As the other two fluorescent tubes have been in situ for a few years, I said I would have them all replaced so they all lasted a long time. For some reason he brought another guy with him, which was unnecessary, and he always did the work alone before. They went to get the required items. Didn't take long for the work to be done. I also had an oven light replaced and a screw put into the bathroom light fitting, which had come loose. So nothing major. The tube that wasn't working flickered if it was turned on, which apparently means the control gear inside the fitting was faulty.

Anyway I should have asked how much beforehand, but as nothing major, just replacement of oven light and 3 fluorescent tubes, and fitting a screw in the bathroom light fixture, I didn't really think of it. Anyway, I nearly passed out when he said I had to pay £170!

I had some money kept for any work I needed doing, but it wasn't enough and I had to raid my purse to make up the amount.I said it was much more than I expected. He said everything has gone up. (That old chestnut! Blame inflation, Covid, whatever) But I do realise things have got more expensive.

After he had gone I was stressing about it and I texted him and said I’ve just had a look at the lights. I only wanted new fluorescent tubes, not a whole new system! I didn’t need this extra expense, especially on top of Christmas.
You should have asked me. I was shocked at the cost.

HIM :
I’m sorry, you did say to change them all, it’s hard to get hold of them tubes now days and they will prob cost around the same about the same

ME:
I don’t know why you didn’t ask me. you could have rung me from the shop and explained how much they would have cost and I would have said just replace the tube that’s blown. (There seem to be loads of fluorescent tubes £5-£10! from what I saw on the internet.)

HIM:
Ok, it’s was just the tube as it was flickering, it would have been the control gear inside the fitting, that’s why we ask if you want to change them all so they match. (I said I wanted to change all 3 TUBES so they all lasted a long time).

No mention was made about replacing the entire fitting for THREE lights.

HIM:
Ok, well between us we have miss communicated, what you like to do about this?

HIM:
I’ll come back and give you £70 back. So you are just paying for the materials.

He came back a couple of hours later and gave me the money back, but I've still paid £100 for what I considered a small job. I wish I had just left things as they are.

He said after this don't contact me about any more electrical work. I said well I wouldn't would I? I'm still fuming.

Don't know how you do a poll of am I being unreasonable!

Qualified electricians are able to easily earn £300 a day. They're highly qualified and they regularly have to sit exams and pay high rates for insurance.

From the sound of it you employed an electrician to replace a few bulbs/ tubes and replace a screw. They had to go shopping for the parts you needed, and that took time.

Next time you need something like this done look around for a general handyman/ woman. And with any tradesperson, ask before you have the work done what it's likely to cost. Always ask for a price. You can't complain if you don't ask.

No499 · 22/11/2022 20:56

YABU. Do it yourself next time.

CheesenCrackersmm · 22/11/2022 21:07

£170 sounds like a very fair price.

Perhaps ask for a sodding quote first if you are going to get moany about it.

LittIe · 22/11/2022 21:07

No idea why you posted a thread asking if you were unreasonable, then disagree with people who said you were!

Hope you feel good about yourself leaving the electrician out of pocket.

1WomanWonder · 22/11/2022 21:14

In other news OP, next time you need a sticking plaster, don't call Bupa.

SkylightSkylight · 22/11/2022 21:31

YABVU

I'm not going to repeats the last two hundred posts.

Beachbabe1 · 22/11/2022 21:32

You could have done these jobs yourself very easily at the fraction of the cost!! I got a new oven bulb on ebay for a few quid and screwed it in! Hey presto!

cansu · 22/11/2022 21:35

You should have asked the cost first. In my experience small jobs are always inflated as they don't really want to do them.

SheWoreARaspberryBeret123 · 22/11/2022 21:40

Where do you live op?

MrsEdnaWelthorpe · 22/11/2022 21:48

Fucking hell, the man has the patience of a saint. Can't believe you actually took money that he'd earned from him and then moaned about him on nextdoor!

Good luck getting someone to help in future, I think you'll find all the local tradespeople are very busy

seething1234 · 22/11/2022 21:52

Electricans price includes van insurance, van wear and tear, diesel, tax, public insurance, employer insurance, cost of registering with an audited body, cost of ongoing training, transportation cost to pick up bulbs, income tax, (as high as 40% where I live), disposal costs of old bulbs (driving to where ever to dispose of thdm)

YABU and actually if you are that stuck for money you should check price before hand. If you calculate all of the above that tradespersons profit is not much.

Where I live people are always whinging that they can't get tradespeople and the reason is people like the OP put tradespeople off dealing with one off small jobs- they all want to do commercial work. And as mentioned the other worker was probably an apprentice.

gamerchick · 22/11/2022 21:58

You're having a laugh OP. Proper shocking behavior on your part.

handbagsandholidays · 22/11/2022 22:06

YABU ... £170 sounds very reasonable!

Undertheoldlindentree · 22/11/2022 22:18

I thought YABU near the start. I've now read all your updates and still think YABU.

Everyflippingusernameistaken · 22/11/2022 22:19

I'm an electrician and always clarify my price before undertaking any work and he should have done the same to give you options not just assume

Sorry that you have had a bad experience

I am always worried about getting any work done as I've been over charged before, hopefully in future you find someone who doesn't take advantage.

I put this same post on Mumsnet and have had nothing but abuse about how unreasonable I am, apart from 1 so far, over 130 nasty ones!

I hate when that happens as you are right, it wasn't what you thought, he should have told you how much before going ahead

Thank you.
Much appreciated.
Unfortunately women on their own get unfairly treated, and taken advantage of.(

Hahaha why are you posting this? It doesn't make you sound more reasonable. You look silly.

userxx · 22/11/2022 22:45

I've been a single woman dealing with tradesmen many times, you need quotes for work.

Everyflippingusernameistaken · 22/11/2022 22:50

Yes Ha ha HA! Hopefully your black listed by all the traders in your area. Good luck with that.

deflatedbirthday · 22/11/2022 23:11

@Everyflippingusernameistaken you haven't answered what you expected to pay a break down of what you think that price would include.

I think it’s the made up answers from NextDoor where everyone is sooooooo much more reasonable than mean old Mumsnet. We’re just haters here!

75% of the posters on NextDoor are paranoid loons who see scams and rip offs around every corner so I’m not surprised they agree with you.

fluorescent tubing and the control units for them are pretty dated tech now. You are being completely unhinged over this, but I suspect you’ll never see it.
