OVERPRICED ELECTRICIAN

Everyflippingusernameistaken · 22/11/2022 17:52

OPINIONS PLEASE! SORRY IT'S LONG-WINDED!

I had an electrician round this morning (won't mention his name).
Was supposed to be here at 9 and at 9.30 I texted to see if he was still coming, and he replied that he'd be here about an hour later.
Nice of him to let me know.
Not a good start.
I've have had him to do work before and he was good.

I needed a fluorescent tube replacing under a wall unit in the kitchen. As the other two fluorescent tubes have been in situ for a few years, I said I would have them all replaced so they all lasted a long time. For some reason he brought another guy with him, which was unnecessary, and he always did the work alone before. They went to get the required items. Didn't take long for the work to be done. I also had an oven light replaced and a screw put into the bathroom light fitting, which had come loose. So nothing major. The tube that wasn't working flickered if it was turned on, which apparently means the control gear inside the fitting was faulty.

Anyway I should have asked how much beforehand, but as nothing major, just replacement of oven light and 3 fluorescent tubes, and fitting a screw in the bathroom light fixture, I didn't really think of it. Anyway, I nearly passed out when he said I had to pay £170!

I had some money kept for any work I needed doing, but it wasn't enough and I had to raid my purse to make up the amount.I said it was much more than I expected. He said everything has gone up. (That old chestnut! Blame inflation, Covid, whatever) But I do realise things have got more expensive.

After he had gone I was stressing about it and I texted him and said I’ve just had a look at the lights. I only wanted new fluorescent tubes, not a whole new system! I didn’t need this extra expense, especially on top of Christmas.
You should have asked me. I was shocked at the cost.

HIM :
I’m sorry, you did say to change them all, it’s hard to get hold of them tubes now days and they will prob cost around the same about the same

ME:
I don’t know why you didn’t ask me. you could have rung me from the shop and explained how much they would have cost and I would have said just replace the tube that’s blown. (There seem to be loads of fluorescent tubes £5-£10! from what I saw on the internet.)

HIM:
Ok, it’s was just the tube as it was flickering, it would have been the control gear inside the fitting, that’s why we ask if you want to change them all so they match. (I said I wanted to change all 3 TUBES so they all lasted a long time).

No mention was made about replacing the entire fitting for THREE lights.

HIM:
Ok, well between us we have miss communicated, what you like to do about this?

HIM:
I’ll come back and give you £70 back. So you are just paying for the materials.

He came back a couple of hours later and gave me the money back, but I've still paid £100 for what I considered a small job. I wish I had just left things as they are.

He said after this don't contact me about any more electrical work. I said well I wouldn't would I? I'm still fuming.

Don't know how you do a poll of am I being unreasonable!

It’s your own fault for not requesting a break down quote, not having a clue what current reasonable rates are (his rate was reasonable) for goodness sake, if you are cheap and a time waster for self employed tradies, learn to change a tube light or oven bulb yourself, honestly with YouTube there, learn, it’s piss easy.

I was self employed once and people like you were the bane of my life. Completely different industry but we would blacklist clients like yourself so no one else was stung.

Suzi888 · 22/11/2022 19:48

You should have probably asked for a quote and stated you wanted it done cheaply as possible.

I think YABU as they can charge exactly what they want.

Everyflippingusernameistaken · 22/11/2022 18:04

Butitsnotfunnyisititsserious But I didn't ASK for all the fittings to be replaced, just the tubes! He also didn't need an assistant!

Most likely an apprentice as others have said. Its still not a bad price. If you don't like electricians prices, keep your lighting as it is.

Why did you call an electrician to replace a light bulb?

This! That is what I find most shocking! It would never enter my head to pay an electrician to change a fluorescent tube. I'm amazed he agreed to do it it in the first place! It really didn't need an electrician!

Coldymccold · 22/11/2022 19:54

Tradespeople are a ripping us all off, there isn't much we can do unfortunately other than get more people to do a tradem. It can't be that difficult to learn.

And paying for their time to go and buy the lightbulbs!

OxanaVorontsova · 22/11/2022 19:55

He did the job for free, you're still complaining about it, YABVVU

imaditto · 22/11/2022 19:58

You paid about right. I think you were out of order.

DIY next time!

loislovesstewie · 22/11/2022 20:05

I paid £60 to have one light fitting replaced recently, he brought an apprentice with him, took 20 minutes. I'm not complaining because a) he did a great job and b) it had to be done by a professional. It's why they do the job and I don't.

Everyflippingusernameistaken · 22/11/2022 20:09

MargotChateau It's funny, because I've got loads of fucking shit responses on here, but just the opposite on NextDoor! There were a confusing array of fluorescent tubes on the net, which is why I did not do it myself.

OP posts:
Everyflippingusernameistaken · 22/11/2022 20:10

OxanaVorontsova I think £100 for 3 tubes and an oven bulb is extortionate. Not my fault he got it wrong and bought 3 complete fittings with tubes!

edwinbear · 22/11/2022 20:12

My electricians call our fee is £90 - £170 including materials sounds about right to me.

You're not paying for the bulbs, you are paying for his time. His highly qualified, yearly assessed at high cost, professional time.

You are extremely unreasonable

Snappyfrog · 22/11/2022 20:14

You sound beyond unreasonable. Good luck trying to get someone decent again.

Hooverphobe · 22/11/2022 20:14

You are paying for him NOT being confused by all the different types of bulb.

Undertheoldlindentree · 22/11/2022 20:14

YABU!

Everyflippingusernameistaken · 22/11/2022 20:15

boatahoy Doesn't anyone actually READ the post?! I wanted the tubes changed not the effing fittings! Online tubes were between £3 and £7 for that size, 1 small and 2 medium size. His mistake to replace the whole thing x 3.

Sixsmith · 22/11/2022 20:16

It's like seeing a solicitor for advice. You must pay for their time and expertise. Same thing.

user374698 · 22/11/2022 20:16

We usually just change our own lightbulbs. You will pay the same whether it's a simple job or a difficult job as it is the time it takes

EarringsandLipstick · 22/11/2022 20:17

I've RTFT with my mouth hanging open.

OP YABVVVVU.

The price is completely fair (including materials).

The fact he entered into a dialogue with you, then refunded you £70 is amazing & to his credit.

You're an idiot, as you've lost a reliable tradesperson who won't work for you again.

Sixsmith · 22/11/2022 20:18

But if the control unit was faulty, changing the bulb won't fix the issue. And if one unit went, he'd have to replace that unit, ie the whole fitting.

Then he asked if you wanted them all changing so they matched. Or they'd be odd. You said yes.

So you got three new matching fittings. For a reasonable price.

Agree with this.

I'm shocked at your reaction !

Why don't you READ your own posts including the text exchange?

There was a faulty mechanism necessitating the change; he then changed all 3 to match.

Regardless, how much less would you expect to pay for time, expertise & materials?

Poor man.

splatfrog · 22/11/2022 20:20

It's a lesson for you next time OP. The price seems very reasonable for me. If you'd unplugged the tube yourself (youtube will show you how) you can read the part code on it. Your electrician seems like an honourable chap giving you a refund. You're lucky. CF territory.

What words did you actually use to explain what you wanted? “I want them all replaced” could mean anything.
