Is anyone else boycotting the World Cup?

Couldn't see a thread specifically on this. I've said I'm not watching any games. I know I'm one insignificant person but I don't want to add another 1 to the viewing figures. I'm furious listening to all the commentators / footballers saying "let's focus on the football now".

Countries boycotted South African sports tournaments due to apartheid. Why are we (as a country / team) just blindly going ahead with this now? England, France, Germany, USA etc should all be boycotting.

And as for David Beckham... he really has put the last nail in the coffin of his alleged integrity hasn't he. Knows he's never getting a knighthood so thought WTF I'll just grab the £150 MILLION.

Anyway sorry for rant. Has anyone else decided not to watch it this time for these reasons?

If I watched it normally I’d be boycotting it. But I wouldn’t watch it if it was next door so I’d be lying if I said I was actively boycotting it. I watched that thing on Netflix about it. It just reaffirmed my belief that football is entirely corrupt.
It’s not for me wherever it is held but I do find it particularly abhorrent in Qatar.

None of our household is remotely interested in football but if we were, yes we would boycott it.
vile corrupt game.

The world cup has been held in plenty of place where being gay is a crime or where human rights are abused. Did you all make the same outcries then, the media certainly didn't.

Neither was there any mass media hysteria over the winter Olympics being held in China where human abuse violations are happening everyday and people are in forced labour camps.

Will you all stick to your guns when the world cup goes to America where women's reproductive rights are bring eroded everyday or where black people or people of colour are MURDERED by the police with no consequence.

It's been proven that the figures around migrant worker deaths in Qatar widely quoted in the media are incorrect.

Qatar needs to improve in many ways, but let's not pretend that there isn't a huge amount of islamaphobia and racism behind the bullshit the media are pedalling.

Homosexuality was also illegal and a crime in the UK when England held the World Cup.

No one seemed to object then.

So because people didn't object then, they can't object now?

I don't hear any objections to Americas hosting of the WC which is still to come. The winter Olympics were very recently, no media boycotts or objections on the basis that China is murdering and imprisoning Muslims in forced work camps.

Apartheid Israel hosted Miss Universe, again no mass media outcry over their treatment of Palestinians, killing of Palestinian children or stealing of Palestinian homes.

All these people paid to go to Qatar and yet trying to claim some sort of moral highground, absolute hypocrisy, especially as many of these overpaid presenters frequently holiday in Dubai or have presented or played in previous WC in Christian nations where homosexuality is also illegal.

The racism and islamophobia is clearly visible, whether you acknowledge it or not.

Absolutely people should object now - homosexuality as a crime was wrong in the UK and wrong in Qatar.

It just seems a bit hypocritical and convenient that we forget that the UK had the same laws.

Yarrawonga · 23/11/2022 09:49

Not boycotting it as such but nobody in the house has any interest in football.

Who's forgetting? The UK had the same laws and now we don't.

I am, but then I’m not exactly a fan of fucking football anyway. That’s at least partly because of the utterly obscene amounts of money involved, not to mention corruption within FIFA, and the shameful yobbish fans (not all of them by any means, I know) who among other disgraceful behaviour, boo and jeer during another country’s national anthem.
