Is anyone else boycotting the World Cup?

Couldn't see a thread specifically on this. I've said I'm not watching any games. I know I'm one insignificant person but I don't want to add another 1 to the viewing figures. I'm furious listening to all the commentators / footballers saying "let's focus on the football now".

Countries boycotted South African sports tournaments due to apartheid. Why are we (as a country / team) just blindly going ahead with this now? England, France, Germany, USA etc should all be boycotting.

And as for David Beckham... he really has put the last nail in the coffin of his alleged integrity hasn't he. Knows he's never getting a knighthood so thought WTF I'll just grab the £150 MILLION.

Anyway sorry for rant. Has anyone else decided not to watch it this time for these reasons?

It's not going on in my house.

I'm guessing everyone on this thread made sure not to watch the Winter Olympics Beijing? I would certainly hope so 😬

We don't know, perhaps? Why don't you start another thread to ask about that?

@TruckDriving 😂

Guessing you enjoyed watching the World Cup when held in russia (considering they're not very pro gay either!)

Interested in this thread?

Not boycotting as such - just ignoring it, as I usually do with football. Such an overrated pastime.

TeenDivided · 21/11/2022 14:48

What I don't quite understand is how 'we' feel we can take the moral high ground when gay footballers in England feel they have to stay 'in' for fear of being 'out'?

Unless of course we are meant to believe that the % of gay men in professional football is far below that on the general population?

Rowthe · 21/11/2022 14:48

I'm following it.

You're missing a cracking match!

KurriKawari · 21/11/2022 14:49

Absolute hypocrisy.

Remainiac · 21/11/2022 14:49

Not a football fan but like many others, I would follow England at a major tournament such as World Cup, but not this time.

Well I suppose because gay people in the UK don't get 7 years in prison? Or death if they are Muslim?

But shouldn't we sort out our own house first?

I did not watch that one.

Now perhaps you'd like to start a new thread to conduct your straw poll on everyone's morals, or perhaps reveal your own stance?

No @TruckDriving but as a Muslim I can tell you that the racism in England is absolutely awful, do we have to wait for the bar to reach "imprisonmen"?

LittleMissGlum · 21/11/2022 14:54

@TruckDriving I find it odd, you happily obviously supported World Cup held in Russia, and they don't support homosexuality.

I'm not sure. Are they mutually exclusive? Fighting discrimination should be an everyday action on the part of individuals, institutions in the UK, and the government.

Boycotting the Qatar World Cup isn't an everyday occurrence because the opportunity has only come now. We've been presented with a choice - to tune in or not.

@TruckDriving cross posted 😁

DriftwoodOnTheShore · 21/11/2022 14:55

Total ban here. Shameful.

TruckDriving · 21/11/2022 14:55

Thanks @LittleMissGlum - yes for clarity, I didn't tune into Russia

See my comment above to TeenDivided.

Not sure why you would think they are mutually exclusive.

what world cup?

purplecorkheart · 21/11/2022 15:04

No not watching here. My workmates and I normally run a competition where we each draw an team in the world cup competition, pay a fiver and there is normally a prize for 1st, 2nd and last. This is not happening this year and no one is watching the matches which would normally be played in staff canteen. I know it is not much

AuntieMarys · 21/11/2022 15:05

I hate football so I wouldn't watch it even if it was in a different country. Dh would normally watch, but not this one.
It's a bloody farce

Letsjumpthebroomstick · 21/11/2022 15:07

Nope. It's banned in this house . Didn't watch the Russian one either . Really crap as I used to love watching the World Cup.

They used to (be imprisoned, or at least it was illegal) in the UK, only a few decades ago.
We hold developing countries to our current standards, which is kind of hypocritical in some ways. And football still isn't great for gay players in the UK.

I don't agree with Qatar hosting the World Cup for so many reasons but we should also have a look at ourselves when criticising other countries.

Football does also bring a lot of awareness and highlights some of the problems. Most people wouldn't have even heard of Qatar before the World Cup was given to them and maybe it will do some good in some way.
