Are you still following bands of your youth?

The older porter has come in to let me know how the gig went last night..Sham 69! His voice is rough from presumably singing along!

He told me Pete Shelley of Buzzcocks died in Estonia. I did not know that!

He is due to see 999 soon.

Yes! I've seen Slade a couple of times, saw Level 42 recently, Human League and Gary Numan too.

I'd love to see Depeche Mode but not hopeful of that sadly.

AngelsWithSilverWings · 20/11/2022 09:07

I've been a huge Depeche Mode fan since I was 11 years old and first saw them live when I was 16 in 1986. I've seen them at every London date they've done since - once went two nights running. Saw Dave Gahan play live with Soul Savers last December and have my tickets for Twickenham stadium booked for next year.

Depeche still produce new music every few years so I don't feel like they are just from my youth.

I remember writing a little essay thing at primary school when I was maybe around 10 and saying Blondie were my favourite band. I’m now 56 and still listen to them a lot. Debbie Harry can’t be much younger than my mum and is still so cool and brilliant.

Yep, I’ve got tickets next year for the band I’ve been following for 36 years.

Floralnomad · 20/11/2022 12:40

Absolutely, we’ve been going to see Tom Robinson / the Tom Robinson Band since 1979 - at least once on every tour they’ve done and one off shows in between . We are also going to see Squeeze next weekend . Bruce Springsteen is another one that we’ve been seeing since we were very young .

Isseywith3witchycats · 20/11/2022 12:41

yes recently went to see 10cc, Alice Cooper, Iron Maiden, The Cult, Robert Plant the Specials gutted that Ozzie, Joe Bonemassa & Whitesnake both cancelled due to covid there seems to be a lot of the 70s 80s bands still touring and if i can afford and the dates fit i go to as many as i can

Tartifletti · 20/11/2022 12:47

Yes, went to see Suede last month and immediately bought tickets for the next London gig! Loved them in the 90s, love them now. Oh, Brett...

Lucky you! I think they're only doing that one gig in the UK?

I think a lot of people are seeing these old bands now as band members are sadly dying off. 😥

Rockbird · 20/11/2022 13:18

Absolutely yes. I'm a huge Blondie fan and see them every time they come to the UK. Just booked to see them again next summer and they're playing with Iggy Pop who I've also loved for years. Can't wait!

Rockbird · 20/11/2022 13:19

Meant to add that my first Blondie concert was in 1980 when I was 8.

slavetothekittens · 20/11/2022 13:32

Between the ages of 45-55, I saw the Damned a few times, Stiff Little Fingers, Vibrators and Buzzcocks several times before Pete sadly died.( Was secretly hoping Howard Devoto would go back to them as a frontman, but it didn't happen) Was 15/16 when I saw them all for the first time.

KangarooKenny · 20/11/2022 16:22

Two bands I’d like to see now, but no one would go with me, are The Cure and The Killers.

Ilkleymoor · 20/11/2022 16:24

No, not at all. Only one I look listen to regularly is Tori Amos. But I am rediscovering bands from my childhood, so 80s stuff that I was too young for and rejected as being 80s in the 90s.

Flaunch · 20/11/2022 16:44

Not bands, but I’m still listening to the same genre of music and am still a dedicated, if occasional, raver ❤️

elp30 · 20/11/2022 17:10

Yes!

I have been a fan of Simple Minds since 1982, when I purchased my first album of theirs at age 12. When I was 16, I put my name in their fan club magazine looking for penpals (I'm American) and I wrote to one teenager, in particular, who was from Greater Manchester. We married in 1996 and are still married to this day. That band is truly important to us so we have been to see them live since 1982. I think we've clocked up about 40 gigs. It's not really a great deal over 40 years but they don't tour the US that often.

I grew up loving Japan but they broke up when I discovered them but I've followed their solo careers over the years. I just saw Porcupine Tree with Richard Barbieri (Japan's keyboardist) recently.

I've seen Duran Duran, Depeche Mode, Nick Mason's Saucerful of Secrets, not because I'm a Pink Floyd fan but because I'm a fan of Gary Kemp of Spandau Ballet and Guy Pratt because I loved him when he was in Icehouse. If I had the money, I'd definitely go to Australia and see Icehouse live again. The last gig I attended of theirs was in 1988.

Whatagreatidea · 20/11/2022 17:12

Yes….. massive Hanson fan !

doubleshotcappuccino · 20/11/2022 17:44

Yes! ...I know for some they were cringe but AHA's new album True North is a masterpiece .. start with " you have what it takes" .. brilliant

Cocolapew · 20/11/2022 17:51

Yes I still go and see Blondie when I can, they didn't come to Belfast this time unfortunately.
Obviously I can't go and see him but I still buy Prince merchandise and have seen The Revolution in London.

Sparklingbrook · 20/11/2022 17:57

Not any more really. They were my eighties and I loved them more than anything but I’m happy for them to stay there when I was a teen.
Still got all my pictures and memorabilia and the teen memories.

Oldraver · 20/11/2022 18:36

Last night we went to see the Saw Doctors who OH has been going to see for 30 odd years ( me a few less) 16 year old DS has seen them a few times and says it was one of the most brill nights he's had ..and we saw his favourite band on Friday

lucysmam · 20/11/2022 18:38

@KangarooKenny I'll see The Killers live with you, they're amazing (even with Ted/without Dave)! I've loved them since a gent who drank regularly in the pub where I worked bought me Hot Fuss, when they released it, & told me to listen to it!

I don't often listen to other bands I grew up with unless it's on an evening with dd1, but do occasionally find myself down a Spotify wormhole of tracks I used to love.

justasoul · 20/11/2022 18:40

Whatagreatidea · 20/11/2022 17:12

Yes….. massive Hanson fan !

High five 🙌🏾

flowerycurtain · 20/11/2022 18:40

Yup. Still a big Take That fan despite the crap music and the fact there's only 3 left. I just love seeing them and be inc transported to being 13 and singing along to Babe hoping some boy would be calling the landline soon.

I wrote in my teenage diary when they split up how distraught I was and how I hated my Mum because she wouldn't let me go to see them live as I was too young. I got to see them 10 years later and it' become a little mantra of mine that you never know where life will take you!!

louderthan · 20/11/2022 18:58

I went to see the Prodigy in the summer. Amazing. Have seen Suede many times in the last few years too. Very, very tempted by Blur at Wembley but don't think I can justify the price...!

theblackradiator · 20/11/2022 19:11

yes recently went to see the pet shop boys and have just booked to see Deacon blue for next year. honestly not into anything current love all the 80s early 90s stuff.
