Cheque - when was the last time you wrote one?

As the subject says, when was the last time you wrote or cancelledGrin a cheque?

If you haven't done so for a while, do you have a cheque book? Do you know where it is?!

OP posts:

Years ago

Theradioisoncoco · 18/11/2022 22:49

I think I know where a cheque book is though, maybe....

cantforthelifeofme · 18/11/2022 22:50

Probably 1-2 years ago.

I know where every paying-in book ad cheque book is.

I assume you don't?

Do we throw away these books?

Phos · 18/11/2022 22:51

It’s in the glove compartment of the car. Last time I wrote one was when I had to pay for some second hand uniform at school. I wasn’t sure how much I was going to get so a cheque was easier than cash.

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 18/11/2022 22:52

I still probably end up writing one or two a year; however, I was watching Children In Need earlier and seeing some of the kids handing over the massive oversized cheques and I was wondering if any of them realise that it's actually based on an actual thing - and not (apart from the super-size) just a gimmick exclusive to telly charity donation presentations!

They're almost certainly the only cheques they'll ever see in their lives - if you gave them a book of standard sized cheques, they probably wouldn't have the foggiest - and would be looking around wondering how the TV cameras could ever pick up something so small!

Several years since I wrote one, although I receive them quite regularly. I used to have to write them for DD's school but thankfully covid brought them into the 21st century.

Yesterday 🙂

They don't issue them at my bank now, and haven't for years. Most retailers stopped accepting them years ago too. Bit shit if you don't live near a cash machine and need to pay someone with no card machine.

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 18/11/2022 22:55

I think you usually have to request a new cheque book nowadays (some accounts don't allow them at all); and the books from our bank are now only 12 or 18 instead of the 'traditional' 30.

I'm old enough to remember when they produced them with '19' already printed for the first part of the year - and people were concerned about what would happen once the year ticked over to 20!

Ssmiler · 18/11/2022 22:55

I’m going to write one tomorrow! I got a bill from the benefits office for an overpayment of benefits for a family member - paid for a week after the date of death.
The options available to make payment are to phone them and pay by debit card or to send a cheque! After the joyous time I had trying to phone them to stop the benefits in the first place I decided searching for my long hidden cheque book would be an easier bet!

HerRoyalNotness · 18/11/2022 22:56

Every quarter for the pest control guy. Then for school for band stuff/T-shirts. They take cash or check. If you want to pay by card you have to go in to school and thats a faff.

Tiggy321 · 18/11/2022 22:57

Haven't written one for about 15 years. Don't live in UK and where I live haven't used cheques for as long as I've lived here!

WhyIsEveryUsernameAlwaysTaken · 18/11/2022 22:57

Yesterday! 😊

Wishawisha · 18/11/2022 22:57

I don’t think I’ve ever written one. We were still getting them from grandparents in the post until about 5 years a go though.

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 18/11/2022 22:58

Cheques used to be fantastic for when you had a bill to pay or needed to buy something that you had no money for now, but you WOULD have three days later, after pay day and before the cheque cleared.

I know it seems like a thousand years ago now, as the few places that do accept them can get them cleared much more quickly; but that was one of the very few times the big banking system actually worked in favour of the little poor person - although, granted, not so great if you were the little poor person receiving a cheque.

I live in the U.K. and was going to say not for 15 years either!

HPandTheNeverEndingBedtime · 18/11/2022 22:59

A few years ago, the only thing Ive ever paid for using them are DDs school photos but once they moved to paying on their website I started to do that instead.

Hellosunshine1993 · 18/11/2022 23:00

I’ve never written one. I’m in my 30’s and I’ve never had a cheque book

Batshittery · 18/11/2022 23:00

About 2 or 3 weeks ago to pay a charity for some raffle tickets they --keep-- sent in the post

ShakeYourFeathers · 18/11/2022 23:02

Ha yes, I can’t believe they are still using them?!

The funny thing is, I’m in my late 30s and I don’t ever remember writing one. I remember my Mum’s chequebook and wondering who she was writing all these cheques to; it seemed so grown up. So half of those kids’ parents probably never even used cheques which makes it even more ludicrous that they are still using the big ones on TV.

Elderly relatives used to send them through the post because they didn’t want to use internet banking. Most of them now do use it. One still has never used a computer but gets his son to do bank transfers for Christmas and birthday gifts in his place. It used to be the one reason for me to go into an actual bank branch and then the relatives stopped sending them around the same time you could finally scan a cheque and pay it in via the App.

Today!!

Puzzlerly · 18/11/2022 23:13

About a week ago. To enter into a competition (my hobby). I'm in my forties. I hope it remains a viable method of payment as I write probably 20-30 a year and keep all the cheque book stubs!

Neverplayleapfrogwithmrpipes · 18/11/2022 23:14

This week. I volunteer for a charity and we use double signature Cheques all the time
