Cheque - when was the last time you wrote one?

As the subject says, when was the last time you wrote or cancelledGrin a cheque?

If you haven't done so for a while, do you have a cheque book? Do you know where it is?!

Not for a long time but I will be writing one this week as I don't do internet banking and I need to transfer some money to dh. I did have to search a while for the cheque book.

I’m going to write one tomorrow! I got a bill from the benefits office for an overpayment of benefits for a family member - paid for a week after the date of death.
The options available to make payment are to phone them and pay by debit card or to send a cheque! After the joyous time I had trying to phone them to stop the benefits in the first place I decided searching for my long hidden cheque book would be an easier bet!

Oh my good Lord... They want the benefits back for a week after they died??? That's appalling. A week!

MightyAtlantic · 18/11/2022 23:17

I've got absolutely no idea when I last wrote a cheque! Probably not in the last ten years. I don't even think I've got a cheque book any more.
I hardly ever use cash these days, never mind cheques!

Wednesday. DS1 needed a cheque to pay for a school thing.
I'll also need one to pay for his provisional driving licence in about a months time. I'm in Northern Ireland and the ONLY way we can pay for a provisional licence is with a cheque. I'm also horrified that it's £62.50 whereas if I was in England it would only be £34 to apply online!

IloveStrawberrylaces · 18/11/2022 23:18

I have to pay for my ground rent every year by cheque. No other option. You can't phone them or email them either. They need to enter the 21st century!

L1ttledrummergirl · 18/11/2022 23:22

Earlier this year. I don't want to give up my cheque book as it's useful to have around for small organisations that don't have a card reader.

When DM died I had to order a cheque book as solicitor requested cheques to pass on to people during probate

We also need cheques for our large work pensioners group events and outings

This week. I volunteer for a charity and we use double signature Cheques all the time

Yes! I'm on two committees, but thankfully not a signatory, and both of those clubs have it in the constitution that two signatures out of the three (chair/secretary/treasurer) are required for payment. The only time the signatories see one another is once a month at club meeting, so it is the only way they can do it at the moment.

My dm is a treasure of a charity and it's quite the palaver when fundraisers and things don't deal with cheques

SanchezAndSmith · 18/11/2022 23:25

Never

Alacarde · 18/11/2022 23:25

Yes - still write cheques a few times a year.

iknowimcoming · 18/11/2022 23:30

Last week for something very niche (after the online payment system failed) and I had a phonecall yesterday to say they had received the remittance slip but no cheque (they were in the same envelope) and had I definitely sent it? When I said yes, was told that unfortunately the person who opens the post often doesn't notice cheques and tears up the envelopes with the cheques inside so could I contact my bank to cancel the cheque (I said no as the bank would probably charge me) and they took a credit card payment over the phone in the end, sigh! Hmm

RPerrin · 18/11/2022 23:33

No cheque book and last one I wrote was years ago.

I think you should definitely cancel the cheque!

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 18/11/2022 23:35

Couple of months ago…to pay the chimney sweep!

onlythreenow · 18/11/2022 23:36

Many years ago. I'm not in the UK and we haven't used cheques here for a few years.

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 18/11/2022 23:36

I had to request a cheque book for dealing with a deceased relative's estate (twice - they just apparently ignored my first request). Then, when I came to write some rather large cheques, the bank just ignored them; then, when I followed it up, they just said it was over their limit and pretty much wanted to wash their hands of it. They asked me to write duplicates to replace the ones they'd just ignored and then, when I asked for their guarantee that the replacements would be paid, they said they couldn't. Useless (HSBC) - if a bank doesn't know how to send money at its customers' request, what is it actually for in the first place? It's like a greengrocers that has never heard of potatoes.

YourUserNameMustBeAtLeast3Characters · 18/11/2022 23:37

I’ve not thought about cheques for ages. The last cheques I used to write were for the window cleaner, but not for about 3 or 4 years. Basically none since I (finally) put the banking app on my phone.

We used to receive cheques in the post from DH’s family for birthdays, until about 4 years ago when a whole batch of birthday cards (in one big envelope) never arrived.

Definitely none received or written since covid.

shreddiesandmilk · 18/11/2022 23:39

I'll be honest, I'm not sure I've ever written one. And I left school over 10 years ago...

EBearhug · 18/11/2022 23:43

About a week ago, but before that, it was several months ago.

Changingmynameyetagain · 18/11/2022 23:44

I last wrote one just before covid to pay the milk man, he moved to internet banking when covid hit and I haven’t written one since.

The school went cashless about 5 years ago so I don’t need them there anymore and my window cleaner accepts PayPal.

CandyCaneLane0 · 18/11/2022 23:47

I've never written one

etulosba · 18/11/2022 23:55

About a month ago. I hadn’t had write one for ages and could only find an ancient cheque book issued in 1992. Not that it mattered, because the bank paid out.

2bazookas · 18/11/2022 23:55

I have a cheque book, know where it is, and wrote one last week ( sent mail order to unknown little company instead of ordering online, because their website was so poor I gave up and was not keen to provide card details).

I maybe use 4 cheques a year, useful for situations just like that.

AlfiesGirl · 18/11/2022 23:59

I write them quite often, perhaps 3-4 every month. I do some voluntary work for an organisation which sometimes involves making payments to pensioners; when I suggest sending a bank transfer, they sometimes get rather panicky about sharing their bank details - and often request a cheque instead.
