As the subject says, when was the last time you wrote or cancelledGrin a cheque?

If you haven't done so for a while, do you have a cheque book? Do you know where it is?!

Three years ago for summer school dance fees. It's all bank transfer now for that sort of thing.

MeanderingGently · 19/11/2022 03:50

Haven't written a cheque for years. Changed bank accounts when I came back to the UK and my account(s) no longer issue cheque books or paying in books so don't I have any books anyway.

Rayna37 · 19/11/2022 04:02

Last month for a wedding gift. Had to really think how to write it though and remembered having to show the bride how to write one a decade or so ago!

Recently graduated family members did seem quite familiar with them though, said they just pay them in on the app so no hassle.

My husband receives regular cheques to cover the online shopping he does for his Mum.

wibblewobbleball · 19/11/2022 04:38

I'm 35 and I've never written a cheque.

Trumpton · 19/11/2022 05:54

We wrote a cheque to cover MILs funeral in September.
Also have a brand new executor’s account cheque book from Lloyds for Santander to transfer her small amount of savings into. ( Aside…They have been a total pain to deal with, everyone else has been easy)
So next week we can write 6 cheques for her grandchildren.

FireworkFluster · 19/11/2022 06:13

I have a cheque book and a paying in book. I even know where they are! I write a cheque to a charity a couple of times a year. My mum gives me a cheque for my adult children's birthdays, which I scan with my banking app and then when it's cleared, I transfer them the money.
Writing cheques and hoping the wouldn't bounce feels like a very long time ago! Will never forget the sinking feeling of a bounced cheque and the accompanying £25 fee.

  1. Changed bank in 2015 and didn't ask for a cheque book.
EspeciallyD · 19/11/2022 06:56

About three years ago for a school photo. My cheque book still lives in my desk so is at hand. The photos arrived from a new provider (I had an account with the previous one). As it was likely to be the last time I bought one I CBA to set up an online account so I wrote a cheque, put it in the envelope provided and gave it to my DC to hand in.

I still receive several a year from various people and organisations. My DCs are older teens and when they were primary school age it was cheques for everything they did, school dinners, after school clubs, Scouts, dance classes etc, so its not that long since I used them regularly.

You can scan cheques now.
We had a refund for something via a cheque ( might have been car tax?) and that was paid in by the banking phone app.

EspeciallyD · 19/11/2022 07:15

Yes, that's really useful. I bought my mum (who doesn't use online banking) a new phone and she offered to pay me for it in cash - no thanks. Then she said she'd go to her branch and transfer money to me. Hassle for her. Then she remembered she had her chequebook in her bag, handed me a cheque and watched in astonishment as I paid it in with my phone.

the80sweregreat · 19/11/2022 07:32

I do like that you can have people's bank transfer details and just pay it by an app. Our old Window cleaner liked cash , pita !!our new one takes payments the modern way! Much easier all round.

Yes, DP has just changed his car and was sent a cheque for the refund of the tax on the old one and he was pondering about how long it was since he'd seen one and how he'd be able to pay it in, so I told him that at least one of his bank accounts would allow him to pay it in through the app, as I'd done the same a few months ago. He promptly did, declared it witchcraft and wondered if they'd notice if he paid it into the other account as well.

We do have a cheque book for the joint account and the last one was written 4 years ago, and we've used 5 cheques from that book in the last decade, so I'd comfortably say that we're set for life on the cheque front, not that I expect to ever need one again.

A PPs comment has reminded me of the time that you could pay by cheque the day before payday if you'd run out of money, but this bit us on the arse one time we were really struggling and had fallen behind with everything. We sent a cheque by second class post to pay some council tax and somehow, they managed to try and take the money the very next day and of course, it bounced and I just thought 'how'? If someone had been sending us a cheque by second class post it would have been at least a week before we'd actually be able to spend it.

the80sweregreat · 19/11/2022 07:38

Good point re scanning cheques to different bank accounts .. !
I only did it the once. I'm sure someone has tried to pay the same cheque in elsewhere on a different app ..
This could make more work for the DVLA maybe ? How does that work ?

Belledan1 · 19/11/2022 07:39

A year ago. My house was leasehold and used to have to pay ground rent. The company were really old fashioned. Bought the lease now so don't need to pay. They insisted on postal orders if didn't have a chq book.

Ragwort · 19/11/2022 07:41

I send a few cheques each year, mostly for charity requests that come through the post ... I can't be bothered with paying online ... such a faff (yes, I appreciate that for some people writing a cheque and posting it is equally a faff Grin). I'm also on a couple of charity committees and we still deal with cheques ... in fact I received a very generous cheque yesterday for one of the organisations I am involved with.

workingeverysingkeday · 19/11/2022 07:44

I write loads in work every day

BeetyAxe · 19/11/2022 07:55

This week, probably do around one a month for various things. Quite like sending cheques as gifts. I’m only in my 30’s, does that make me seem old!

TheOrigRights · 19/11/2022 08:41

Arenanewbie · 19/11/2022 01:29

I did it about a month ago. The reason was the same - I’ve got raffle tickets from a charity and they asked for a cheque back. I think the previous one was less then an year ago and it was for the charity as well.
By the way I don’t think that they want you to get cheques from all people whom you sold tickets. I think the idea is that people give you cash and then you make a cheque for the total amount.

I think they expect the recipient to buy them all; they include stickers with my name and address to put on the stump!

I use mine still- adult education classes ( every 6 weeks) WI membership ( every 12 months) Birthday and Christmas cheques in cards .

PaperMonster · 19/11/2022 08:51

I write one monthly. However I was given one for quite a large amount recently and it sat there for weeks until I could get to the bank to deposit it.

CheeseCakeSunflowers · 19/11/2022 08:55

A few weeks ago, I popped it into a card as a baptism present. When I handed it over I offered to do a bank transfer instead if the parents preferred, they did and the cheque was destroyed.

grannycake · 19/11/2022 09:10

I used a cheque earlier this year t0 pay back overpaid pension following the death of my MIL First in many years

Mentalpiece · 19/11/2022 09:30

Crikey, it's 21 years ago since I last wrote one.
I've not had a cheque book for almost as long.

AlisonDonut · 19/11/2022 09:34

Here in Rural France the cheque is not only regularly used, it is the preferred method of payment for anything and everything.

We went to a garden nursery in the spring and there was an almighty queue of locals all buying trolleys and trolleys of plants for the garden. And every one paying with a cheque.

The last time we wrote one, in fact we wrote two was Wednesday.

Snugglemonkey · 19/11/2022 09:42

About 10 years ago. I did have one, but I am not sure where it is. Haven't seen it for years.
