Cheque - when was the last time you wrote one?

As the subject says, when was the last time you wrote or cancelledGrin a cheque?

If you haven't done so for a while, do you have a cheque book? Do you know where it is?!

7 years ago when my DC finished secondary school and I gave up my role on the PTA at the same time.

I have no idea where the chequebook is or if DH has shredded it.
I did receive a cheque this week, handwritten from a receiver for an outstanding debt, simply opened the bank app on my phone to pay in. I haven’t been inside a bank since long before Covid either.

I live in the U.K. and was going to say not for 15 years either!

I can pinpoint exactly when I last used a cheque, as it was the week before we moved to abroad, in June 2001. I banked with First Direct back then, so used ‘phone banking a lot anyway, and although I had to switch to HSBC when we moved I didn’t get a cheque book, and have never had one since. I do recall when we back in the spring of 2002 I bough a car to leave in the Uk for our trips back, a then-new BMW MINI, and the dealer wanted payment by bankers draft, which I picked up from a branch. That was a sort of cheque I guess!

My partner refuses to get online banking, so when he owes me money, he writes me a cheque and I pay it on in via my bank app. I also all involved in a charity who receives cheques from donors. The app to pay them in is a game changer, so much more convenient than traipsing to the bank!

For myself a very long time ago, the company I work for still produces cheques as 1st option for payment but these are automatic and on occasion I will have to write a manual cheque out, the last time was 2 weeks ago

So I can't find my cheque book; I think I might have used the last one and not replaced it.
Does this mean I can't buy the charity raffle tickets? Do charities only use cheques for raffle ticket sales?

I'm 32 and I've never written a cheque in my life.

Beezknees · 19/11/2022 12:07

The only person I know who still writes cheques is my 80 year old grandfather. He doesn't do online banking so if he ever needs to transfer money he writes a cheque.

Epicstorm · 19/11/2022 12:44

I’ve written three this year. Before that 2015.

MrsMigginsCat · 19/11/2022 13:43

At least 10 years since I last wrote a cheque. I changed banks in 2014 and didn't request a cheque book. Can't say I've needed one at all in the intervening years. They were useful though for buying shopping before payday though until the supermarkets stopped accepting them.

Do debit cards still come with the cheque guarantee limit or is that obsolete as hardly anyone takes them?

sept for school and the feckers have just cashed it. grrrrrrrr

StaceySolomonSwash · 19/11/2022 14:19

Not written a cheque since 2004. The last stub says DD school lunches £6. Still got the cheque book but the account is long closed.

flowerycurtain · 19/11/2022 18:45

I use cheques nearly every month to pay some suppliers.

Most recently to pay the Michaelmas rents.

In some ways farming is incredibly technical. In other ways we are so behind the times!!!

Oh my good Lord... They want the benefits back for a week after they died??? That's appalling. A week!

Yes a week, and I advised them of the death within a day to avoid all this.
But more interestingly I got a letter last week saying “ sorry to hear of the death of XXX we have sent £150 Cost of living payment” then less than a week later “sorry to hear of the death of XXX please repay us £90”
Ridiculous - might take me a while to get the cheque book out

No, they stopped that a few years back - if you've got a card to guarantee the cheque, they'd rather have the card payment. Most cheque payments these days are for occasions where you don't have a card, e.g. by post.

RoseMartha · 20/11/2022 02:12

About three to four years ago. I sometimes still receive one from elderly relative at Christmas
