What are your Christmas songs that aren't really Christmas songs?

I'm listening to my Christmassy songs playlist and realising that some of my favourite songs that make me feel really festive aren't really Christmas songs at all, just happened to be popular at Christmas (Pet Shop Boys - Always on my Mind anyone?!).

Also is Paul McCartney's Pipes of Peace actually a Christmas song or do I think that because the video was set as the Christmas Day football match in World War 1? Yes I am a child of the 80s.

What are your favourite feels festive but technically not really Christmas songs?

East 17 Stay Another Day.

crosshatching · 17/11/2022 17:39

Exactly - although there are some festive bells at the end that slightly make it a Christmas song!

River by Joni Mitchell although it is technically a Christmas song , isn't it?
It makes me cry, that I yep that sounds like jingle bells give me chills, takes me back to America in the 60s (not that I was in America in the 60s) but I can imagine how it was.

Batcountry8 · 17/11/2022 17:45

Yy to Pet Shop Boys. That one makes me cry.
East 17 too

Both fill me with nostalgia 😢

I don't know that Tori Amos song, I'm going to look for it. Winter in the title sometimes says Christmas to me and sometimes doesn't, A Winter's Tale - David Essex, yes Christmas, also White Winter Hymnal Fleet Foxes. Winter Winds, Mumford and Sons absolutely not!

The power of music videos in the 80s! Are they still this important now? Also don't know the Joni Mitchell song, this is going to add nicely to my playlist.

Apparently Stop the Cavalry wasn't written as a Christmas song and I believe in some countries it is played all year round

Batcountry8 · 17/11/2022 17:51

Oh Winter Winds 😢

You've got a good list.

I absolutely love Pipes of Peace, it's one of my favourite non Christmassy Christmas songs. The video showed the No Man's Land football game from Christmas 1914 with Macca playing both British & German soldiers which makes it more of a Christmas song I think.

Also love Keeping the Dream Alive by Frieheight (not sure I spelt that right!) It always reminds me of Christmas 1989.

It's so good that we can make our own Christmas play lists now!

Allschoolsareartschools · 17/11/2022 18:06

Oh God sorry to be repetitive about the football match!

The Power Of Love by Frankie GTH
Not a Christms song at all but a Christmas video.
Clever of them as it gets rolled out every year.

It's such a beautiful song it makes me teary

This! Although it became less of a favourite the awful Christmas when I'd broken up with my boyfriend and spent the Christmas holidays putting White Musk and Mulberry gift sets on the shelves of Body Shop. They played the same Christmas CD all day and this song seemed particularly bleak at the time. (It is a great song though and 20 odd years later I'm over it!)

Keeping the Dream Alive is one of my favourite songs and I only listen to it at Christmas, so it's a Christmas song to me. Discovered the extended version last year it's brilliant!

TakemedowntoPotatoCity · 17/11/2022 18:15

Stop the cavalry by Jonah Louie. (However it does contain a line about Christmas, so probably isn't allowed on this list)

First two because they're always played on the Christmas music channels. Last one because it was Christmas number one the year I was in work with it on the radio on a loop!

Ballygowenwater · 17/11/2022 19:12

Sorry by Justin Bieber. It was no 1 the winter I moved to the UK and I remember it constantly being on the radio as I drove to work past all the Christmas lights etc. always reminds me of chrismtas
