What are your Christmas songs that aren't really Christmas songs?

I'm listening to my Christmassy songs playlist and realising that some of my favourite songs that make me feel really festive aren't really Christmas songs at all, just happened to be popular at Christmas (Pet Shop Boys - Always on my Mind anyone?!).

Also is Paul McCartney's Pipes of Peace actually a Christmas song or do I think that because the video was set as the Christmas Day football match in World War 1? Yes I am a child of the 80s.

What are your favourite feels festive but technically not really Christmas songs?

Perfect day by lou Reed.

SeaThingChild · 17/11/2022 19:20

The Frozen soundtrack. Might sound silly but it actually has some really lovely music in it. It was the first film my DD loved and came out the Christmas she was 3, she has a Christmas birthday. The music always feels festive to me.

I would put Wings' Mull of Kintyre on the list - not everyone's cup of tea but I like it, have it as a single on vinyl.
Maybe Abba's The Name of the Game as I think it came out around that time of year, plus Baccaracc's Yes Sir I Can Boogie for the same reason.
Then there are wintery songs like Ultravox's Vienna, or Dream Academy's Life in a Northern Town, plus Northern Lights by Renaissance. All this is a generational giveaway but then some of these get wheeled out every year anyway.

Dear Jessie (Madonna).

FearofQueefing · 17/11/2022 19:32

Weirdly loads of them are Paul McCartney... Pipes of Peace, the Frog Chorus and Mull of Kintyre - what's that about?

Also:
Always on My Mind - Pet Shop Boys
Stay Another Day - East 17
White Winter Hymnal - Fleet Foxes
Keeping the Dream Alive - Freiheit
The Power of Love - Frankie Goes to Hollywood.

crosshatching · 17/11/2022 20:10

So pleased to have found all the Freiheit people. And yes maybe Paul McCartney was the Bublé of the 70s-80s.

Do you think the talent shows killed the Christmas No 1 thing? I notice no one's going for Rage Against the Machine 🤣

While it mentions Christmas time and snow, Two Thousand Miles by the Pretenders isn't really about Christmas, it's about grieving for the death of one of their band members.

I absolutely love Pipes of Peace, it's one of my favourite non Christmassy Christmas songs. The video showed the No Man's Land football game from Christmas 1914 with Macca playing both British & German soldiers which makes it more of a Christmas song I think.

Also love Keeping the Dream Alive by Frieheight (not sure I spelt that right!) It always reminds me of Christmas 1989.

It's so good that we can make our own Christmas play lists now!

Both so good

I also like Wombling Merry Christmas

Frog chorus wasn't a Christmas song

woodhill · 17/11/2022 20:29

Wasn't don't you want me another one?

GoodnightJude1 · 17/11/2022 20:29

I hate every aspect of Christmas but…..

Liam Gallagher - ‘All you’re dreaming of’ is about as festive as I’ll ever feel.

ppleasebob · 17/11/2022 20:33

Advertising Space by Robbie Williams
Not sure why but always feels like Christmas to me! Maybe it was released around that time...

Figgygal · 17/11/2022 20:38

Francie goes to Hollywood power of love is one of my favourite songs generally

Soft spots for
holding on for you by liberty x
Never had a dream come true s club
The frog chorus of course

ThankYouStavros · 17/11/2022 20:39

Dina Carroll - The Perfect Year
Liberty X - Holding On For You

ToffeeNotCoffee · 17/11/2022 20:44

I get it that Frog Chorus wasn't a Christmas song but to me (and some others it seems) it sounds Christmassy.

I also second Dear Jessie as a Christmas sounding song

Ocean colour scene & PJ Harvey- It's a beautiful thing. The video is wintery and fur coaty, love it but only at Christmas.

crosshatching · 17/11/2022 20:45

A Perfect Year is a lovely song, New Year songs always get a bit shoved aside. Abba's Happy New Year is one of my bittersweet favourites.

I love Winter by Tori Amos but it feels like a January song to me, similarly White Winter Hymnal. Maybe because we usually don't get snow until January

I've never thought of Dear Jessie being a Christmas song either, but I think I have never seen the video, is that it?

River by Joni Mitchell is the best ever Christmas song. I count the days down until Christmas is over and the days are getting longer again.

Belindabelle · 17/11/2022 21:19

December Will Be Magic Again by Kate Bush and Cold Winter by Gwen Stefani.

agapanthus1979 · 18/11/2022 07:43

@Belindabelle I came on to say Kate Bush, too. I love that song!!

Catlady2021 · 17/12/2022 10:38

East 17 stay another day and Frankie goes to Hollywood Power of love.
Absolutely no connection to Xmas at all in the lyrics but regarded as Xmas songs.

Wouldn’t mind the royalties for those songs… .... East 17 have dined on that song since about 1994..

Objectionhearsayspeculation · 17/12/2022 12:41

What's This Danny Elfman, Oogie Boogie's song Ken Page.
Santa Claws is coming to town, Alice Cooper
I really don't know why but Viva la Vida by Coldplay
