If you had a chance to vote again for Brexit would it be leave or remain?

Just saw a poll which said Public support for Brexit is at an all-time low, with one in five Brexiteers now saying they think it was wrong to vote to leave the EU. If you had a chance to vote again how would you vote - trying to make it a goady thread so feel free not to mention if you were remain or leave last time.

For me - I'd vote remain

Oh goody. More division and hostility. Just what we need right now. For fucks sake, get a life and let it go

This. Why do remainers keep banging on about it?

herecomesthsun · 18/11/2022 13:00

Quite a few teachers did have degrees though, especially secondary school ones.

Alainlechat · 18/11/2022 13:11

Although the Brexit vote won the referendum there was every opportunity in parliament to reduce the impact.

The final straw for me was when there was a meaningful vote and every option from another referendum, Norway version, or hard Brexit was voted against.

And now we are where we are.

The only way back or to adjust is for the Labour Party to put that in their manifesto, but will they dare?

Unlike Leavers who upthread have posted pictures of Farage gloating while saying "We won"?

vera99 · 18/11/2022 18:11

An honest view of the clusterfuck 😁

Surely a better question is ‘why aren’t leavers absolutely fucking raging that they didn’t get what they were promised?’

That the unicorns never materialised is ERG speak for they got the wrong kind of Brexit or JRM's assertion it will take 50 years for the benefits to come through. But best of all there is still a cohort of leavers that take great succour in the bitter taste of remainer tears regardless of the effect on themselves or the country.

Apparently, Liz Truss and Kamikaze Kwarteng were finally going to unleash the Brexit dragon but were brought down by the "blob" and vested interests. £30bn spaffed up the wall I hope they are pariahs wherever they go, I certainly wouldn't hold back if I ever spied them.

Remain then and remain now. However, we remainers have to acknowledge that 'our' campaign was lazy and arrogant and likely helped rather than hindered the original result. Some of my fellow remainers are really arrogant and rude, and that does not and never did help our cause. If (hopefully when) we rejoin, we need to listen to Eurosceptics and take their concerns on board.

@PipinwasAuntieMabelsdog I entirely agree and I speak as the kind of remainer the other side makes up to scare their children - my personal preference would be a federal United States of Europe (though I know the UK would never go for that and wouldn’t try and foist it on anyone). The remain campaign in 2016 was a joke, and the fact that Will Straw got knighted for leading it was an insult to everyone who actually wanted to remain in the EU - he did more damage than Farage.

I entirely agree.

And we need to start changing the narrative so we can rejoin the single market before it gets much worse.

''@Freysimo · Today 13:00
This. Why do remainers keep banging on about it?''

Because the country is facing financial carnage and the situation has been made worse by Brexit?

It is unavoidable to point out that Brexit has been a disaster for the UK.

There has not been a single visible benefit from Brexit, only negatives.

Everything that was promised by the Leave campaign was based on lies.

At some point you just need to accept reality and stop pretending that this was not a giant mistake.

This is no longer some petty argument between remainers and leavers at this stage, it is about having a grown up conversation about how we are going to deal with this self-inflicted harm and consider whether we need to change direction.

Brexit isn't working. It never was going to. Now we see the consequences of it.

Only a fool doesn't accept that they sometimes make mistakes and refuse to try to correct them.

Time to admit the whole thing was a farce that has now helped crippled our economy and made most of us poorer.

👏👏 I don't know whether some of the responses here are just delusional, or if they see it and are too embarrassed to admit it. The fact that some seem actually proud of themselves blows my mind.

I’m not sure why a party doesn’t capitalise on changed opinion and put it in their manifesto. Obviously more likely to be Labour but they’ve ruled out the SM even.

nottodaytomorrow · 18/11/2022 20:34

You may as well have asked if people are racist and thick or not racist with a brain 😂😂

You said you wanted a goady thread Wink

Vigneau · 18/11/2022 20:46

Farage asked us if we really wanted 400 million Europeans living in the UK. Ridiculous really to assume virtually the whole population of Europe would come here all at one time. That would be leaving the streets of Milan, Frankfurt and Rome deserted with tumbleweed blowing down it.

Yet, the leavers believed him. they fucking swallowed it. And there we have history.

My work involves capital investment, mostly private but some public. I tell you know that foreign investors only want the most profitable stuff now. The UK is seen as negative in the short term. By investment standards that is 15 years. 15 years. Not 2023 or 2026. We are looking beyond 2035 before they will consider major investment in the UK and only then if it works. There are so many other places for international capital now. Watch the UK's living standards slide comparatively.

vera99 · 18/11/2022 21:37

Have any leavers said what it is they have "won" - the blue passports btw are shite I have one now - a shoddy card cover rather than the robust plasticated previous one and made in France to boot.

I knew exactly what I was voting for with forethought at the utter shitshow leaving would entail. Not all leavers were racist but sure as hell all racists were leavers. The utter refusal of either main party (though the Tories as the architects are the most culpable) to acknowledge the great and lasting harm this has done, probably more than Ukraine or covid is utterly shameful.

Exasperatednow · 18/11/2022 21:38

Freysimo · 18/11/2022 13:00

Because Brexit is shit and highly unlikely to every be anything other than shit.
I'm surprised leavers aren't livid.

FelicityFlops · 18/11/2022 21:41

Well I was not able to vote as I am disenfranchised in the UK.
Some of my immediate family voted to leave, which surprised and shocked me at the time.
I think those still living would probably change their minds now.

Alainlechat · 20/11/2022 00:19

Twitter says the Times is reporting that Sunak is considering a Swiss style relationship with the EU. Farage not happy about that.

travellinglighter · 20/11/2022 00:23

Kazzyhoward · 17/11/2022 15:52

Leave again. Plenty of European countries in a worse state than the UK!

Name one.

asblindasabat · 20/11/2022 00:27

Disclaimer: this is my personal opinion, and everybody is entitled to their own opinions.

I’m not an expert on politics, I don’t understand brexit or the EU fully, but i swear leaving the EU just seems to have been a shit show. I wish we had stayed in the EU

TomPinch · 20/11/2022 00:31

Perhaps it was always going to happen but I think the UK fucked up the trade negotiations with the EU (who in fairness are a pain in the arse to negotiate with) and they've been fucking up ever since due to putting short term politics before economics.

The NZ government offered the UK a negotiating team. But the UK government declined the offer despite having no experience of negotiating trade deals themselves (unlike NZ.)
