Does anyone buy a real Christmas tree anymore?

OP posts:
FatOaf · 16/11/2022 02:49

Can't think of any reason to.

StiggyZardust · 16/11/2022 02:50

Yes I do.

HotToddyColdSauvignon · 16/11/2022 02:53

Yes. The whole “choosing and buying” the tree is part of our lead up to Christmas. Love it, love the look, the smell, the arguing over the fullness of one as opposed to a slight tilt on another, “but that one’s got more branches at the top…”

And before anyone gets all faux outraged about the environment

amp.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2018/dec/08/are-real-or-fake-christmas-trees-better-for-the-planet

Quote: “If the surge in sales of artificial trees at John Lewis and other stores signals an attempt by consumers to go green, then they should perhaps think again.
With 8m real trees in the process of being purchased this Christmas, the idea of saving one from the axe might be prompting the move to fake ones this year in the belief that they are more environmentally friendly.
But environmentalists and energy analysts would disagree. Take one key product detail of these thousands of artificial trees – they are made of plastic.”

AriettyHomily · 16/11/2022 03:04

No the dog put paid to real trees, he likes to sleep under the tree and last time we had a real one there were needles everywhere

Ted27 · 16/11/2022 03:09

We have a living tree, the current one is on its fourth year this year - might be the last year for this one as its grown very well and is getting too heavy to move

mathanxiety · 16/11/2022 03:09

Yes, choosing the tree is our annual self inflicted family crisis. We try to get the best possible tree at the last possible minute. Always a nail biter.

sarge89 · 16/11/2022 03:33

Yes! We have a fake one in the toy room and we'll bring in our little real one from last year for under the stairs (it's grown quite a bit!) and then we've ordered a 6ft real one for the lounge ♥️🎄

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 16/11/2022 03:41

Yes, always.

Lagattolove · 16/11/2022 03:45

Yes we do. Love a real tree we do have an artificial one too but it never looks as nice. but this year will be the first with the new pup so we will have to see how that goes.

feministqueen · 16/11/2022 03:47

Yep!! Love getting a fresh tree :)

Marmiteorvegemite6 · 16/11/2022 03:50

Yep. Fake ones are worse for the environment.

Ruthietuthie · 16/11/2022 04:04

We do every year, usually an 8 - 9 ft Douglas fir.
We have it delivered by Santa on a bicycle. He is accompanied by elves, also on bicycles, and they play Christmas music as they bring the tree into the house and put it in its stand. Plus they also bring pulled pork sandwiches. (No idea what the connection is between the pork sandwiches and the tree - it's a local company).
I don't want fake flowers or fake plants in the house, and it's the same for a fake tree. I LOVE everything about a real tree, particularly the lovely smell.
I just can't wait. And my little boy is nearly as excited! It will be delivered on December 4th.

RobinRobinMouse · 16/11/2022 04:08

No, I like bringing our fake one out every year, it's like an old friend. At some point I think I will plant one in the garden though and put lights on it each year as it grows.

RobinRobinMouse · 16/11/2022 04:14

Also, do people really replace fake trees after less than 10 years? That's probably less than a years actual use altogether!

donttellmehesalive · 16/11/2022 04:15

I have always had a real one but at £70 each in recent years. Last year I bought an artificial one from Balsam Hill and love it - enjoyed not having to water it or vacuum dropped needles, no disposal afterwards, and very realistic.

EmmaGrundyForPM · 16/11/2022 04:21

We always had real trees until the dc left home. There was the ritual of choosing the "best" one, watching it being bagged up etc.

However, a few years ago I started to resent the amount of money we spent each year on a real tree so bought an artificial one in the January sales. No regrets

emptythelitterbox · 16/11/2022 04:27

Thinking about getting one this year.

GetUsedToTheHeatAgain · 16/11/2022 04:42

I usually buy one real tree every year, but not this year as I am in Asia and they are not really a thing, but looking to get an artificial one.

Must add though I have had a few from Lidl of all places and chose carefully as they are all netted and had great success with them being a good shape and full and have lasted well in a crumpler stand. My local garden center had priced itself out of the market even their smallest tiny tress were over £50

whiteroseredrose · 16/11/2022 04:53

Yes. It's a family ritual to go and choose a tree. Look at a dozen then buy the first one we saw.

stuntbubbles · 16/11/2022 04:56

Yes, millions of people. The real tree is such a huge ritual: going to buy it, carrying it awkwardly home, trimming the net off and all the branches fluffing out and you realising it’s 10x too wide for the room, the smell of it… I get fed up with the sneezing and needles everywhere within about two days, though, but I love it anyway. Fake trees are horrible.

caroleanboneparte · 16/11/2022 04:56

Yes- no space to store a fake one!

deeperthanallroses · 16/11/2022 04:57

Of course, would always have a real tree! They get planted especially for Christmas so are always replanted and their growth is good for the environment surely? It’s very different from logging old growth forests.

onlythreenow · 16/11/2022 04:58

I would if I could - they don't seem to sell them here anymore. If I can't have a real tree then I don't want a tree, it's just not the same having a fake one.

Just like us looking for all the above plus an amazing picture book looking tree at the cheapest possible price Grin
