Does anyone buy a real Christmas tree anymore?

OP posts:
maddiemookins16mum · 16/11/2022 07:06

I’m still finding needles from last year so it’s back to the 5ft Woolworths 2006 for me this year.

NotMeNoNo · 16/11/2022 07:07

Yes I like having a natural tree, having slightly different shape/size each year and then it goes for compost in January.
We get a Fraser fir that sits in water and doesn't drop needles too badly. I can see the advantages of artificial trees but it's not my choice, we don't own one.

Always.

We have for the last 5 years and before that when I lived in a flat, I bought a little one for the table. We aren't this year, we don't have the space at home and i dread to think what my toddler will do to it

lollipoprainbow · 16/11/2022 07:08

100% yes !!

Noln · 16/11/2022 07:11

Yes we always get a real one. Fake ones just feel pointless and not festive to me. The one year I tried it, I found it really disappointing. Oh look, let's wrap tinsel round some plastic that's shaped a bit like a tree.

I also prefer the cheaper ones that are more needly but have a lovely scent! We go and pick one from a Christmas tree farm each year and it's become a Christmas tradition.

LubaLuca · 16/11/2022 07:12

OP, I'm surprised that you don't see Xmas tree farms and local suppliers advertising their trees for sale, they're everywhere. Even our milkman delivers real trees!

We'll get out our trusty 18 year old plastic one. I can't be doing with the faff of a real tree, although I do understand the appeal of course.

avocadotofu · 16/11/2022 07:14

Yes we do, I can't imagine not having a real tree personally.

Spicypies · 16/11/2022 07:15

Yes! It is our favorite traditions. There is a
family-owned Christmas tree farm nearby, so we go every year and spend the afternoon choosing one. I bring a thermos of hot chocolate and a blanket so that we can have a little picnic whilst we take turns sawing.

I like that we are supporting a local family business and buying a locally (and sustainably) grown product. Also love that the tree stays fresh for the whole season and always smells amazing!

Spicypies · 16/11/2022 07:16

Oops, that 👆should read <one of> our favorite traditions.

AutumnCrow · 16/11/2022 07:17

Not since the spider’s nest incident.

OneFrenchEgg · 16/11/2022 07:18

No, as I've got older I've got really weird about cutting plants down for ornament - I don't have cut flowers anymore. I'm vegan so it doesn't make sense as obviously I eat plants!

FacebookPhotos · 16/11/2022 07:19

I always get a real tree. They smell like Christmas.

PinkHeadphones · 16/11/2022 07:19

Yes. I just don’t like fake ones. It’s like having an Astro turf lawn.

PotteringAlonggotkickedoutandhadtoreregister · 16/11/2022 07:26

Of course! The idea of having a fake tree is horrible!

Shade17 · 16/11/2022 07:29

Yes, fake ones are awful!

YeahThanks · 16/11/2022 07:29

Of course, no fake plastic trees here.

crimsonlake · 16/11/2022 07:31

Always a real tree here too.
My son's are grown up but come home for Christmas and the eldest would be horrified if I bought a fake one.
We always decorate it together which sometimes means these days I am sat with an undecorated tree in the living room until they arrive. I have been known to put the lights on it though whilst I am waiting.
However they are getting so expensive and it always has to be a big tree, buying one on my own is never the magical experience as I need help from someone to twirl it around to examine it.

Ohheythereitsme · 16/11/2022 07:33

We buy multiple real trees to decorate the house. It’s all part of Christmas for us. Visit a beautiful tree farm that also sells decorations. They often have a couple of animals out as well.

RudsyFarmer · 16/11/2022 07:33

We have a fantastic huge artificial tree that’s passed down two generations. Hopefully it will remain good enough to pass on to one of my kids too at some stage.

Venetiaparties · 16/11/2022 07:33

Yes we do, and we always plant it in the garden afterwards. We now have a small woodland of Christmas trees!

harrypoppers · 16/11/2022 07:34

Yes! I buy a local grown tree.I like the smell. And I love picking one out too.

Fireballxl5 · 16/11/2022 07:35

We always had a real tree. Then a friend was moving abroad , she had the best fake tree I’ve ever seen so I bought it from her. As it’s not new to us I feel ok environmentally.
Everyone is amazed that it’s fake, it’s so realistic.

Buttons294749 · 16/11/2022 07:35

I have a smallish plastic tree but our main tree is always real. There's something about the chosing (i too always leave until last minute!) And the smell. Even the needles falling off is part of the "magic" for me.

Every year i contemplate buying a basalm hill one that will be perfect and prelit but i never do it. When we move to our forever home i think i will get a potted one (definitely dont plant in the ground as you will end up with a small pine forest as my grandad discovered 🤣)

Ihavedogs · 16/11/2022 07:37

Ted27 · 16/11/2022 03:09

We have a living tree, the current one is on its fourth year this year - might be the last year for this one as its grown very well and is getting too heavy to move

We are also on the 4th year with our pot grown tree. Sadly I think this will be the last year. I can’t believe that I have kept it alive for so long and it’s the only one I have been successful with.
