Weirdest thing you've had in a lasagne?

My DH wants me to put carrots in a lasagne. Yay or nay? What's the weirdest or nicest thing you've put in a lasagne?

Surely Ragu starts with soffrito, which includes carrots...
I had one with sweetcorn and peppers in once (traditional meat lasagne not a veggie one), that was weird

dudsville · 15/11/2022 21:09

Nay, though i did make a vegan lasagne where the white sauce was blended white beans with oil and lemon. It was a nice flavour, but too weird.

OrangePomander · 15/11/2022 21:10

I made a very nice one with venison once.

Attictroll · 15/11/2022 21:12

Carrots a yay. Dp once put ginger - we still occasionally have words about it 😂

FeelinSpendy · 15/11/2022 21:14

Smoked fish (although there was no beef).

KindergartenKop · 15/11/2022 21:14

Yes always add carrots.

lasangya · 15/11/2022 21:15

I make it with onion and beef and red lentils

I was considering adding corgette or mushroom. Is that weird?

I had one with potato in last week (together with lamb and squash). It was surprisingly nice and vegetable hating ds had seconds- presumably the extra starch reconciled him to the vegetable.

UrsulaPandress · 15/11/2022 21:16

Agree that carrot is an essential part of Soffritto.

GNR2022 · 15/11/2022 21:16

Carrots always go in lasagne! How do you make the ragu otherwise? Onions/carrots/celery

lasangya · 15/11/2022 21:16

Do you graye the carrots or dice them? Basically I'm looking to pimp my lasagne so I can cook lots and freeze it then we have a meal ready to microwave.

We always had baked beans in lasagne as kids. I think my parents added baked beans to a lot of things to cheaply bulk out the meat. We also had baked beans in curry, shepherds pie, spag bol, stew etc

I'm afraid I don't. The jar said to just use mince so I've just about managed to make my own tomato sauce with herbs and an onion.

I once had ham in a lasagne in a restaurant instead of the pasta sheets. It was absolutely disgusting!

Is soffritto what Italians call the mincey bit?

Soffrito is finely diced onion, celery and carrot which is the base of the tomato sauce

I don’t think the OP means this, I think she means carroty chunks. To which the answer is no, it would not be nice - too sweet and sturdy. Roasted med veg maybe, or bulk the mince with lentils.

A old flatmates used to spread marmite on the pasta layers when we were students, surprisingly good.

So do you grate the carrot?

GNR2022 · 15/11/2022 21:22

Finely chop the carrots/onion/celery. Fry on a low heat with some olive oil. I add bacon/rosemary/pancetta after this and fry some more. Then add mince. Fry off a little, then add beef stock/red wine/tomatoes and tomato purée, season and simmer on the lowest heat for at least an hour

And I've heard some people put coffee in their bolognase maybe marmite is like that!

I add grated carrots to mine, kids never know it’s there

MarxandMarzipan · 15/11/2022 21:22

Vegetable lasagne at a local pub had whole sprouts in it. That was interesting.

icebearforpresident · 15/11/2022 21:23

I never make a proper ragu but have been known to put grated carrots in with the mince to bulk it out a bit, tasted fine. Will also add mushrooms and sundried tomatoes if I have them.
