Should they change the Sunday Opening Hours?

Just that really..DH and I were then pondering going to the supermarket but have no mood at the moment and time is running out as they shut at 4pm.
I was just wondering what others thought of this law that large shops are only allowed to open for 6 hours on a Sunday? We would probably have gone to the supermarket a little later if that was an option. Some people may like to work on a Sunday to be able to earn some extra wages? Does anyone think it's time to change the laws or do you think they should stay the same ?

Not helpful I know but I am old enough to remember when shops were shut on a Sunday. I remember being amazed when I visited a friend in Scotland and the supermarkets were open.
Fairly sure most workers don’t get paid extra for working Sundays (I never have been). I’ve always liked that Sunday is the day I get to finish early.
Surely shops are open long enough the rest of the week?

jamontoastaddict · 13/11/2022 15:45

Yes I agree I had the Sunday trading laws.

jamontoastaddict · 13/11/2022 15:45

Hate

Pixiedust1234 · 13/11/2022 15:46

Yes they should change....to shut all day.

thestuffthatdreamsaremadeof · 13/11/2022 15:47

Yep the world has changed, I think Sunday trading laws are outdated now.

Yes they should change....to shut all day.

Absolutely

It is the day of rest.

PeekAtYou · 13/11/2022 15:48

We should have the same rules as Scotland (normal opening hours)

Bairnsmum05 · 13/11/2022 15:51

In England.

ClocksGoingBackwards · 13/11/2022 15:52

It’s time to change the laws. They were based on religion and an expectation of people going to church which is now completely outdated and there is no space for it in general society anymore.

Sunday opening times should be the same as all the other days.

MrsDanversGlidesAgain · 13/11/2022 15:52

My local supermarket is open 8am-9pm during the week and 10am-4pm on Sunday. Just how much shopping do people need to do that they need Sunday hours abolished - don't they have anything to do but shop?

JennyJungle · 13/11/2022 15:53

It should just be another normal day and open til late.

It’s too out dated now.

barskits · 13/11/2022 15:54

Many supermarkets are open 24 hours a day from very early Monday till very late on Saturday night. Surely everybody can manage to do their shopping at some point during those hours.

There's also loads of smaller supermarkets and stores which don't have to abide by the Sunday trading laws, as it goes by square footage of trading space I think. The small Co-op near us is open from 7am - 10pm on Sundays.

lightand · 13/11/2022 15:48

Absolutely

It is the day of rest.

It’s not a day of rest for the emergency services, NHS, Priests and Vicars though is it?
They might quite fancy picking up some groceries after a shift on a Sunday evening.

DrAliceHamilton · 13/11/2022 15:54

In general I think it's a good idea but right at the moment there's so many staff shortages that most stores would struggle to man the extra hours.

Fatcatriot · 13/11/2022 15:55

Pixiedust1234 · 13/11/2022 15:46

Yes they should change....to shut all day.

Yes...not especially for religious reasons but a day off.....enough shopping already

Come to Scotland, we have none of that nonsense.

NuffSaidSam · 13/11/2022 15:55

No, I like it.

I think a little bit of inconvenience is good for you. You shouldn't be able to have whatever you want, whenever you want. Go before 4pm or wait until tomorrow.

JesusMaryAndJosephAndTheWeeDon · 13/11/2022 15:56

There is an argument for reversing the Sunday trading laws, small independent shops, craft fairs, farm shops etc did better when they weren't competing with Tesco etc.

Arenanewbie · 13/11/2022 15:57

Yep the world has changed, I think Sunday trading laws are outdated now.
Agree with this ^

PuttingDownRoots · 13/11/2022 15:57

The people it effects most are shift workers. Not everyone works 9-5 Monday to Friday.

Maybe they should have maximum weekly hours. Not just on Sundays.

glamourousindierockandroll · 13/11/2022 15:58

I am sure there are plenty of people who are very glad of the wages they earn on a Sunday, and don't need the state to tell them they can't. I used to work weekends when I studied and wouldn't have appreciated my wages being halved in favour of a "day of rest", thanks.

Like people who rush into Tesco at 5pm on 24/12 and wonder why they're out of sprouts and turkey.

Penguinsaregreat · 13/11/2022 16:00

I don’t think opening hours should be extended. If anything I’d vote for them opening less, the same with pubs should.

Yes .they are twats aswell

Funniest thing is when people try and collect items from argos on xmas eve and they have left it late and they have shut. Then its some how the shops fault for their poor planning
