Should they change the Sunday Opening Hours?

Tilda77 · 13/11/2022 15:30

Just that really..DH and I were then pondering going to the supermarket but have no mood at the moment and time is running out as they shut at 4pm.
I was just wondering what others thought of this law that large shops are only allowed to open for 6 hours on a Sunday? We would probably have gone to the supermarket a little later if that was an option. Some people may like to work on a Sunday to be able to earn some extra wages? Does anyone think it's time to change the laws or do you think they should stay the same ?

We were having this discussion today and I agree, I don't understand why they don't open 10.30 - 4.30 or even 11 til 5. Most people would probably prefer a lie in.

Why is Sunday a "day of rest"? Why should Christians have a monopoly on trading hours? Did I miss the memo saying they were more special than people of other faiths and none?

Traditionally this was a Christian country and the Queen was defender of the faith

CraftyGin · 13/11/2022 18:30

I am fairly certain that my little corner shop owner would not want to see a change in opening hours.

Readinginthesun · 13/11/2022 18:30

Move to Scotland. Having said that , I don’t know when I last went shopping on a Sunday .

Of course. Just the English. Nobody else 🙄

Because we're talking about England. Pay attention.

I used to work in a supermarket Sunday opening was 11-5pm and store opened at 1030 for browsing. It was unreal the amount of people who came in at half 10, filled a basket and demanded to be served. They used to stand there huffing and puffing and complaining they are in a hurry. Not my problem. Some would dump the basket and loudly pronounce they would.go to Asda instead. Which meant by the time they had driven to asda it would be 11am and tills open anyway!!
Working in retail is horrible and the entitlement of some members of the public is atrocious!!

Kite22 · 13/11/2022 18:32

I'd like to see a change so the big supermarkets don't open on Sundays.
Can't see it happening, sadly.

I definitely don't think they should be expanded. Supermarkets are open well into the late evening 6 days a week. Plus of course there is internet orders if you prefer. I think you should be able to organise yourself to fit your shopping in to the 90 or so hours a week the shops are open, in truth.

onlythreenow · 13/11/2022 18:33

I generally don't think shops need to be open on a Sunday, but supermarkets are different. People work such odd hours these days that traditional opening hours don't work.

I'm not in the UK, but the supermarkets in my town are open 8am - 9pm every day of the week.

Well she's gone and Charles is a twat so we're probably going to become even more secular as a country.

Bazinga007 · 13/11/2022 18:33

The law is outdated, let the shops open when they like. Its not always possible to go during the week and if everybody then rocked up to Saturday, it would be unbearable.

There should be no restrictions on Sunday shopping. People can always play their religious "get out of jail free" card if they want to claim exemption.

The OP didn’t say that only people living in England could reply !

Absolutely

It is the day of rest.

For who?

Any day in the week can be a 'day of rest'

neighboursmustliveon · 13/11/2022 18:42

@Hellsmovie when we go out for Sunday breakfast we go for 10/10.30 and stay out till lunch and have a couple of drinks. Therefore I couldn't then drive to the range after our treat breakfast/brunch. It's not about 'having my shit together' it's about enjoying and using our down time in the way we want to.

That's fine but dont expect the world to revolve around your plans. You know what times shops are open on a sunday plan better

DeltaFlyer · 13/11/2022 18:44

The poster who couldn't shop and then have breakfast because the shop didn't open until 10.30 😂.
We sometimes go out for breakfast on a Sunday morning and then go to the shops afterwords. Get parked at all the big shopping centres with no problems and are usually leaving while everyone is fighting to get parked and we have the rest of the day to go do other stuff.

I think shops are open long enough, particularly with online shopping now. Granted it can be a pain if it gets to Sunday evening and you need something sooner rather than later but you have to do without.

CraftyGin · 13/11/2022 18:46

I grew up in Scotland, with no Sunday openings, no pubs open after 10pm, no Bank Holiday shopping.

The Church of Scotland did not fathom that anyone would want to shop on the Sabbath, so did not forbid it.

As others have said here, it is really not great to have a trickle of customers over a long period of time, compared to the same customers over 6 hours.

Seriously, looking at some Mumsnet threads today, you would not know there was a recession and fuel crisis on. It's all about spend, spend, spend.

ThatGirlInACountrySong · 13/11/2022 18:48

I think if retail is expected to be full hours then all other services should open weekends too

Weekend closing for admin jobs etc, that should also be open 7 days

And that's all changed now in Scotland. Why can't it change in England?

It doesnt need to.

caroleanboneparte · 13/11/2022 18:52

I find it utterly baffling that central London supermarkets close at 4pm when Scottish supermarkets in remote towns are open 8am -10pm.

It didn't NEED to change in Scotland either but it did and the country didn't implode.

They can open for six hours between 10&6... so they could chose to open and shut later.

JubileeTrifle · 13/11/2022 18:58

My Morrisons used to be 11-5 and I loved that as nearby shopping centre had closed so was quiet after 4. Went back to normal hours though.

if shops open then buses and trains need to come off Sunday service as well then I presume?
