Should they change the Sunday Opening Hours?

Just that really..DH and I were then pondering going to the supermarket but have no mood at the moment and time is running out as they shut at 4pm.
I was just wondering what others thought of this law that large shops are only allowed to open for 6 hours on a Sunday? We would probably have gone to the supermarket a little later if that was an option. Some people may like to work on a Sunday to be able to earn some extra wages? Does anyone think it's time to change the laws or do you think they should stay the same ?

I'm sitting on the fence with this. Although my heart says shops should be closed on Sundays like they used to, my head would like them to remain open into the evening, especially supermarket, as in Scotland.

PuttingDownRoots · 13/11/2022 17:59

Living in Germany, it was no shops on Sundays (bar petrol stations and I think pharmacies had a rota). But the shops could apply for special licences to open on Sundays (for example during Christmas Markets or when the Fair was in town). Maybe they could let shops have extended hours a certain number of times in a similar manner.

TrashyPanda · 13/11/2022 18:00

I’m Scottish and it’s just the norm for shops to be open.

don’t understand the angst about it.

schnubbins · 13/11/2022 18:01

Bet the OP doesn't work on Sundays but everyone else should .

@Schoolchoicesucks

Roads weren't so busy

Workers weren't pressurised to work on Sunday and enjoy family time

Now there is not even time and a half if people work Sunday

But what's the benefit to roads being quieter one day a week? If "most" people work M-F and everything is shut on a Sunday, surely that would mean roads would be far busier on a Saturday if everyone who currently shops on a Sunday has to now shop on a Saturday?

I agree people shouldn't be "pressured" to work on a Sunday if they don't want to, but for many people the option to work on Sunday is a good thing - families with young children where parents work opposite days to save on childcare, University students or older schoolchildren who work weekend shifts and study in the week, those who have a different day as their religious or cultural day of rest.

Not everyone has a (local) family to visit on a Sunday. Surely those who want to spend Sundays visiting family or resting can do that without requiring everyone else to?

I did used to love the time and a half Sunday thing.

Same here

Shops have opened on Sundays in Scotland for decades.

We lived in NI for a couple of years the Sunday opening hours were 12-6 which i preferred. Not so good for the employees though.

smilingthroughgrittedteeth · 13/11/2022 18:09

I love the posters who think that people working in a supermarket get the choice to work Sundays 🤣 DP used to work in a large supermarket and didnt get a choice he just had to work the days he was told to. If the Rota says you work sunday then you work sunday whether you like it or not. Its also not a shorter day for staff they are still in early and late stacking shelves its just that they can only make sales between 10 - 4. I used to work mon-Fri so if he had a week day off and worked sunday it meant we only got 1 day together so its not as simple as "well they get a day off during the week instead"

Personally id like to see shops shut on Sundays. People who work mon-fri can shop on saturdays or evenings its not like shops shut at 5 anymore.

I don't work on Sundays anymore but I have done. I worked every Sunday. Last year my rota had me working Christmas day, Boxing Day and New Year's Day 2 of which were Sundays but it was what it was. I changed my job this year but not because of the Sunday working. Sunday is just like any other day to me.
I had to drive past an out of town shopping centre earlier today and a road that usually takes 2 minutes to drive down took 20 minutes because everyone was trying to get to the shops.

Day of Rest advocates...
Would you be happy with restaurants, theme parks, NT places, theatres, pubs, sports venues etc also closing? Or is it just shops?

You're damn right they would. A strong puritan streak still runs in some English people.

Crinkle77 · 13/11/2022 18:14

I don't think they should be open longer. We're now living in a 24/7 world and I don't necessarily think it's a good thing. I wonder how many people that rock up to the shops just before closing actually 'need' what they're buying or do they just want it.This instant society is making people lazy and lacking in the ability to do any forward planning. Years ago you'd have to make sure you planned ahead and bought everything you needed in advance cos you knew the shops would be shut. If you didn't have in what you wanted you just do without and wait until the next day. You can even get online shopping deIivered within the hour these days. Why do people need to have things straight away these days instead of just waiting or making do without?

Of course. Just the English. Nobody else 🙄

FourChimneys · 13/11/2022 18:14

Why is Sunday a "day of rest"? Why should Christians have a monopoly on trading hours? Did I miss the memo saying they were more special than people of other faiths and none?

NCcoziwannaNC · 13/11/2022 18:15

Yes to close!
Most employees don't get double time. You cant generally pick and choose hours. My dsis works Sundays In a supermarket. They won't let her drop them. Or even change to a different week day. Shes been asking for over a year.

This is still a Christian country

BeverleyMacca1 · 13/11/2022 18:17

Some people working on Sundays, in certain supermarkets, are on a double time contract, some on a time and a half contract and the newer staff on flat rate. Now THAT is unfair.

whatsthestory123 · 13/11/2022 18:18

either scrap the sunday trading law or shut for the day im happy with either

also shops etc should be shut christmas day and boxing day nobody needs a new kitchen/settee that much

I dropped mine. Surely it depends where you work?

What does that mean? Do you think the majority of the population actively practice the Christian faith?

They are shut Christmas Day (and Esater Sunday) in England.

bigbluebus · 13/11/2022 18:22

I worked in a High Street Bank back in the days when they closed at 3pm. You could always predict which customers would come in 5 minutes before closing time. Opening hours were extended and guess which customers came in 5 minutes before the new later closing times? The same people.
So I would suggest this might be you OP. Just accept they shut at 4pm and get your sh*t together and get there before they close. No one needs longer opening hours.

Not really. It’s a country with a very strong Christian heritage, and with the CoE entwined into the state, but it’s very much a country for people of all faiths and none now.

LoveAngelLove · 13/11/2022 18:24

Disagree. What more do people need? They're open 24 hours a day, 6 days of the week. Relax.

username8888 · 13/11/2022 18:24

The people who should get the only say are the people who work them.
