Should they change the Sunday Opening Hours?

Just that really..DH and I were then pondering going to the supermarket but have no mood at the moment and time is running out as they shut at 4pm.
I was just wondering what others thought of this law that large shops are only allowed to open for 6 hours on a Sunday? We would probably have gone to the supermarket a little later if that was an option. Some people may like to work on a Sunday to be able to earn some extra wages? Does anyone think it's time to change the laws or do you think they should stay the same ?

But it doesn't just affect you, it affects the people that work in the shops as well.

People only have so much money to spend. They can spend it during the long hours that shops are open for Monday-Saturday. Supermarkets aren't going to start opening more hours on Sunday just to suit a few selfish people who can't pull themselves together to go to shopping during the 6 hours they already open.

And yet that's exactly what they do in Scotland and many other countries!

Exactly.

and it works just fine, for workers and for shoppers.

Even if supermarkets are closed to the public on a Sunday, you would still need staff to come in to sort deliveries, do the online orders and clean.
Some people prefer being off during the week because (shock horror) they don't have families and they can do things like attend medical appointments without taking a day off.

I would vote for bloody UKIP if they promised to abolish Sunday trading. I hate it. We're busy all week and weekend and never make it home in time to get to the supermarket for a weekly shop. Sunday early morning or evening would be an absolutely ideal time to stock up.

Instead we end up buying overpriced shite from the corner shop to tide us over as the cupboards are bare.

@garlictwist I agree. It's not about being lazy. We find It's about there doesn't seem to be enough hours to fit everything in.

Shops are open for about 16 hours a day Monday-Saturday and 6 hours a day on Sunday. That's 102 hours a week.

If shops opened more hours on Sunday, say 8am-6pm, some people would still be moaning about "not being in the mood to go shopping" and getting annoyed when suddenly decide they want to go shopping at quarter to six and they're about to close.

The covid years would have been an ideal time to scrap Sunday trading laws. Having longer opening hours would have reduced the queues and allowed shoppers to spread out more in less busy shops, i.e. make social distancing easier. It was yet another big mistake by Boris, Hancock and co not to take the opportunity to allow shops to be more flexible, even if only for the duration of social distancing rules. Then we could have seen whether a permanent scrapping would have been appropriate.

There really isn't the demand for longer sunday hours. It's one of the few things both the left and right agree on, the left from the "worker's rights" angle and the right from the "keep Sunday special" angle. Shops don't want it as they'd have to pay the staff for more hours and people wouldn't really spend any more money.
