What brand of washing machine?

DeliveringCakes · 12/11/2022 22:41

Ours has just broke, was a Samsung bought for £400 and lasted 5 years, 3 months. I'm a bit angry it didn't last very long considering price/brand.

So please can I have recommendations for good long lasting washing machine brands?

The cheaper the better, obviously. Definitely couldn't afford over £400!

This thread is a little old now so some of the suggestions may be out of date, but if you’ve landed here looking for washing machine recommendations, we’ve recently updated our best washing machines and best budget washing machines pages with lots of great options, as tried and tested by Mumsnet users. We hope you find them useful. Flowers

I have the Samsung too and not impressed. I got it for the whole eco bubble thing but can’t even use the eco setting as it makes all my clothes bobble 😭 … So basically spent extra to have the function of a normal washing machine that sings me a tune after it’s done a load of washing … I feel like it mocks me with the tune lol

DeliveringCakes · 12/11/2022 22:48

@Chloefairydust 😂 I hated the bloody tune too! I feel a bit cheesed off that I paid extra for what I thought was a 'respected' brand but now it's buggered. Wish I'd just bought a Hotpoint or something for £180

Oh I gave a Samsung, I love it! So probably no help here!

TokyoSushi · 12/11/2022 22:50

*have!

Coffeetable123 · 12/11/2022 22:51

Not here to recommend a machine but I would say whatever you end up getting, make sure you research and check the cycle times. I bought a Bosch one recently without much research to replace my old Bosch when it packed in, and the standard wash is 3.5hrs long! I actually cried when I realised this. Who has 3.5 h to do a wash. Ridiculous.

WeAreTheHeroes · 12/11/2022 22:52

Beko - reasonably priced, good range of programmes you can tweak to your preferences.

pimlicoanna · 12/11/2022 22:52

Haier. It's amazing. And practically silent

GappyValley · 12/11/2022 22:52

I’ve always gone for the best Bosch I could afford and they’ve always lasted

annoying, I left one behind in a house when I sold it because my new house had an integrated cheap one, only for it to break a year later. I replaced that with an integrated Bosch but then had to leave it when I sold the house a few years later

Current one is a Serie 4 and going strong after 6 years of doing 2 loads a day, every day

Check John Lewis, they quite often bundle in an extra warranty with their white goods

Skiphopbump · 12/11/2022 22:54

I just replaced my John Lewis washer drier with a Bosch washing machine. It’s washes really well and isn’t too noisy. There are some long settings but shorter ones too.

TeaAndCake · 12/11/2022 22:55

Buy a Miele.
Mine is 13 years old now.
It came with a 10 year warranty but was never used.
It hasn't broken down once in all this time and has had a lot of use (3 children in this household and I used cloth nappies for all when they were babies).

Worth every penny for the reliability.

These are the eco cycles.
They get clothes just as clean but use a lot less electricity and water. Instead of going around and round with clothes they use more soaking and agitation.

We just bought a Bosch washing machine as well. Nearly a 4 hour cycle on eco. We were used to 2 hours on last machine.

You get used to it and plan around it.
Stick with the eco washes.

Highly recommend Bosch/Siemens
Our last one just lasted 13 years

Igmum · 12/11/2022 22:56

Miele. Costs a bit more but my last one lasted 22 years so definitely worth it.

MyBuggyIsOutToGetMe · 12/11/2022 22:57

The only washing machine I’ve ever bought (rather than inherited) was a Zanussi and it outlasted my time in the property. We currently have an Indesit, which is fine, has needed a repair in the last 5 years but is clearly quite a bit older than that.

If I had £400 to spend on one and had to pick a brand, I would get the cheapest Bosch available on ao.com for £399 (ao.com/product/waj28008gb-bosch-series-2-washing-machine-white-73742-1.aspx). We have a Bosch dishwasher and really rate it.

The shorter washes often use a lot more energy and water as they are not optimised for efficiencies like the long eco cycles

PickAChew · 12/11/2022 23:01

How many washes did it do in that 5 years? Mine do 3 loads a day so 5 years is a good innings. I stick with the bosch/Siemens family, these days.

When we were shopping for our latest machine, the samsungs I looked at seemed cheap and (thin) plasticky and the drawer jammed on one of them.

BewareTheBeardedDragon · 12/11/2022 23:02

I love Bosch washing machines. Mine has a huge range of cycles and times. My most used is the 30deg mixed wash which is 1:39 standard, or 2:15 eco setting. The 40deg cotton wash is 2:30 standard or 4:35 eco setting. But is also has a quick wash setting for most cycles and a super quick 30mins option.
If I'm doing a 40deg wash I will use the delayed start so that I wake up and hang it out and it's done it hours of washing while I slept.

MissVantaBlack · 12/11/2022 23:10

I have a nine year old Zanussi washer-dryer. Apart from needing to have the brushes replaced last year, it's worked perfectly all that time, doing one or two washes per day (admittedly, I rarely use the dryer function).

I also have a fairly elderly Zanussi dishwasher which has been very reliable, too.

justasking111 · 12/11/2022 23:30

Mine is a beko. I use quick wash 40c 28 minutes. If I'm doing over night then an eco wash.

Friend with big young family bought a Hoover because it takes bigger loads

Lemoncurd · 12/11/2022 23:46

We got through three Bosch machines, were having repair call-outs for them at least yearly! Husband decided a different approach- get cheap ones and then replace when they have problems rather than pay so much for repairs.
Now on second Beko, had no call-outs for the first, it went 5 years before becoming very noisy and damaging a couple of items. We moved twice in that time, which probably contributed to it not lasting longer (didn't put in the transit bolt things when moving). Think it has saved money this way, gave away they old one to a repair person for spares or repair as it was still functioning.

My Miele’s broken after 7 years. The after care service Miele provided was so bad we’ve decided to replace the machine (with another brand) rather than try to deal with them.

TheTeenageYears · 13/11/2022 00:18

DD was told by a retailer when a product had a fault outside of the 1 yr guarantee that if it had been bought in the UK it would have been covered by UK consumer protection rules for 6 years. I don't know enough about it but did tell a family member when they had an issue and it seems like it is a thing. Maybe have a read www.legislation.gov.uk/ukpga/2015/15/part/1/chapter/2/enacted and see if your not yet 6 year old machine might be covered. I do know that if you bought direct from manufacturer the contract is with them and if not then the retailer.

Thighdentitycrisis · 13/11/2022 00:29

I have a Meile and it’s also 13 years old and going strong

DramaAlpaca · 13/11/2022 00:33

I have a Siemens which is at least 15 years old now. The only maintenance it's ever needed is having the carbon brushes replaced, which is a DIY job.

Seconded, I'm so impressed with mine.

I am on my second lg, the first one lasted 13 years.
