Where to buy a new husband?

So Currys have this thing where you can buy a new appliance and they recycle the old one for you for free. Is there a store that does that with husbands? Preferably with free delivery.

I got a discount on mine as it was a returned one, but the description said New without tags so I don’t think the original purchaser knew how to use it.

Nineteen60s · 11/11/2022 12:05

I’ve had mine for about 18 years and it’s definitely going wonky.
The ‘empathy’, ‘using initiative’ and ‘finding things in the fridge that are right in front of your nose’ apps are sadly not working properly.
I have tried to reinstate them by getting expert advice but unfortunately they are now too old.
However it does like a large helping of car programmes on TV. And endless boring conversations with other car husbands. And cooking. I guess I’ll have to keep it for the foreseeable future……

picklemewalnuts · 11/11/2022 12:13

Fascinating @Nineteen60s we must have different models! The empathy function on mine appeared to be missing initially, but over time it's seems to have relaunched and is 100% better now.
The cooking mode failed almost immediately though, and it tends towards vacuuming regardless of any other functions that may be needed.

picklemewalnuts · 11/11/2022 12:16

The Pickle version has sadly never fulfilled its initial promise. It spends excessive time in sleep mode and functions very intermittently. It has at times been excessively noisy and demanding, but seems to be settling into a quieter mode in recent years. I must mention though, the cooking function has been exemplary. Basic at times, but efficient and reliable. For that alone, Picklehome is glad the initial investment was made.

Nineteen60s · 11/11/2022 12:30

I should have done more research before getting mine!
I have spent a lot of money on it (I even take it on holiday, as it’s is very useful for carrying bags and keeping the children entertained), and it would cost an awful lot to change it now 🙁

I think it's IKEA that lets you try for a full 365 days before giving back for a full refund if you're not happy. I do wonder if this means you could essentially get an upgrade every year?

SenseFromThoughtDivide · 11/11/2022 12:38

Ahem, As a Member of Autonomous Neurons (or MAN) we find a lot of problems are caused by user input. Clear statements such as “that’s definitely the right colour, size or model’ conflict with the response “that’s all wrong” and we need additional processing to distinguish between “that’s fine” and “That’s Fine” or “THATS FINE!!!!” And thus we are only aware of problems by the visible signs of gritted teeth or projectile crockery.

In conclusion, we feel that a process of user training, or re-education will result in a harmonious relationship

I have an old model that moves slowly,if at all, and has had replacement parts. It leaks air from its orifices and needs constant topping up with beer. Cant even give it away

Does the IKEA model allow you to download the build instructions from the website? Are there any online "hacks" for it.

Ah yes. As a member of Wonderful Overseers of Members of Autonomous Neurons (or WOMEN) this is a commonly recognised fault. On behalf of the MAN model that is - a component in the communication circuitry is often missing, or only partially present. This manifests itself in the inability to recognised clear direction and instructions from its Household Manager.

Some of those hacks are so clever! But I think putting multiple units together would invalidate that guarantee. Still, if it sparks joy you may keep them in that configuration for many happy years!

IncompleteSenten · 11/11/2022 13:15

Well now that's just not very environmentally friendly.

Can't we find a company that will give your existing one a tune up, fix any faults, replace any worn out bits and finish off with a full valet?

flingingmelon · 11/11/2022 13:18

I sent mine to cooking school and he's working much better now.

I'd recommend it for those of you looking to refurbish the one you have.

I’ve had mine for a number of years and on the whole I’ve been very happy with it. Functionality is slowing down considerably and it needs the input of a strong cup of coffee to fire up in the mornings but I was not looking to replace. Unfortunately a recent fault has developed, somehow a virus has been introduced ManFlu I believe it is called? Any techie wise women of MN that can advise?

Oh ManFlu! That is bad! It will be out of service for a whole week, requiring multiple inputs of warmth, food, drink and TV. Tiresome!

Nineteen60s · 11/11/2022 13:22

(Haha, some of these are very good!)
Wish I could think of something equally intelligent, but unfortunately my input skills are getting rusty.
One day, of course, this ancient model will stop working completely and the younger models will either burn the remains, or stick them in a deep hole in the ground.
And in the future the newer, much more enlightened models (who are in the fortunate position of having information constantly available on screens in front of them), will entertain themselves by discussing the foibles of the old, cranky MEN and WOMEN models.

Badger1970 · 11/11/2022 13:23

Oh mine has acquired the Manflu malware too. Am quietly considering the "kill" function on it, frankly.

Taxistaxing · 11/11/2022 13:35

Got rid of mine as there was one part that needed constant attention by anyone and everyone, it also whined alot when said part needed attention and created issues when left on its own.
I did think of getting rid of said part rather than whole unit as i thought the part had fulfilled it's purpose and no longer required, but the return on investment for the whole unit was low, so ditched it. Apparently it has had some value on the secondhand market, but bet they have not read it's service history!

TwoOwlSocks · 11/11/2022 13:42

I've had my model for almost 30 years. Hair seems to be undergoing self redistribution from the very top of the model to lower areas such as eyebrows and nostrils. Do I need to buy some small trimming appliances for home management or should I suggest the professional who has the basic hair maintenance contract undertake the necessary work at the regular 6 weekly appointment?

MrsMoastyToasty · 11/11/2022 13:46

Does anyone know how to reconfigure language settings?
Mine is using Pure Glaswegian v.2 (I think that this was common in the 1960s model. ). I am looking for either King's English 2022 or Bristolian 2007. I use Bristolian 2007 myself but the 2 languages aren't syncing properly.

ChristmasTunesAlready · 11/11/2022 13:48

Not sure if someone has suggested this already, but is there somewhere like a car showroom where you can trade in your current husband for a new one but you can 'test drive' the new one for a week or so before committing fully?

RoachTheHorse · 11/11/2022 13:48

@MrsMoastyToasty this is known problem with may models of husband. I purposely chose the version without BRUM3.7 as it was incompatible with my YORKSHIRE1.0. I selected the basic neutral voice without upgrade. Once you've committed it's almost impossible to get that changed even under warranty.

You could try the virtual chat?

MrsMoastyToasty · 11/11/2022 13:53

@RoachTheHorse we have tried that but his graphics program is corrupt so I can't read his writing and he doesn't come with a spellchecker.

thenewduchessoflapland · 11/11/2022 13:56

I think mine is faulty it emits funny smells& makes weird noises especially when in sleep mode;I'm considering leaving it in the car overnight as it keeps me awake.

RoachTheHorse · 11/11/2022 13:59

@MrsMoastyToasty I'm not sure what to suggest then. You may have to live with it and keep using workarounds. Sorry.

TeaAndStrumpets · 11/11/2022 13:59

Mine is an older model but quite sturdily built. I am useless with new tech so prefer to stick to the tried and tested. There are a couple of minor problems, though...the memory is pretty full so occasionally I will be told about some exciting old car facts whether I want to know or not. They just seem to spurt out. TBF I notice this in friends' models too. I think any replacement unit would go the same way in the end, so I just smile and nod.

The other problem is sleep mode activates quite early in the evening, but switching off, then on again, seems to give a few more hours of service.
