Do you wash your clothes straight away if you have worn them to the dentist/doctor/restaurant?

It never occurred to me before the pandemic to do that but I am more aware of germs these days and I have also read on here about people not allowing ‘outdoor clothes’ on the bed which again would not have been on my radar. I would normally wear clothes again if they looked clean.

What do you do if the clothes are clean? Rewear them or wash them straight away?

I don't wear "outside" clothes in the house because I don't want my sofa, bed, chairs, etc getting mucky with dirt, nothing to do with germs, etc. I wear "indoor" clothes in the house with havn't been outdoors, and as a result, my sofas last decades, as does my bed/duvet cover, cushions, dining chairs, etc. - I've had them 20+ years and they still look good as new, without intensive cleaning etc.

Sitting anywhere where lots of people have previously sat just puts dirt onto your clothes which transfers to your furniture and soft furnishings. Try slapping a seat on a train or bus and you'll see a cloud of dust/dirt. Why would you want to transfer that to your expensive furniture?

Unless you actually sit on/in something why would your clothes be dirty because you have been outside in them? What about tops? Why would you feel they are dirty?

I go out then come home and sit on my sofa, sometimes sit on my bed, sit on my dining chairs. I also have had my sofas over 20 years and my dining chairs I have had almost 40 years. They still look good.

I don't really expect my duvet covers to last years and year but, having said that, my present ones came from Primark and I have had them for about 8 years. I am just thinking about buying new ones but mainly because we are decorating our bedroom and they won't go with the new colour. They are washed pretty often (change the bed weekly) and they still look good

I’m sitting on my bed at the moment in the clothes I have worn to clean half the house and walked the dog in. I can’t believe this would cause anyone any harm.

Of course it wouldn't. I did the same thing yesterday, while I was still wearing my shoes!

I have never in real life heard anything as ridiculous as some of the claims on the MN cleanliness and hygiene threads. I don't live in the UK, and I'm sure there are some clean freaks here also, but generally I believe we are a bit more robust and most of us wouldn't be so ridiculous. As other posters have said, it's no wonder the planet is in such a state.

Ffsmakeitstop · 10/11/2022 19:08

I definitely don't. I also (shock horror) wear my work uniform for a week unless it's visibly dirty or it's been hot.
I have a colleague who works two days a week and washes everything including fleeces each day. What a waste of both her energy and electricity.

No. Sometimes think that the Eco protesters should quit the M25 and seek some Mumsnet washing machines to glue themselves to.

Grin

and superglue down bedsheets that seem to require washing as soon has someone has so much as breathed in their direction, enforce using towels more than once before washing them, to saying nothing of the gay abandon with which people on here seem to use bleach, zoflora and anti bacterial sprays and washing stuff. Then we can get on to the throwing perfectly good food away.

I sincerely hope none of the above are bleating, whinging, lecturing and wringing their hands about environmental damage, climate change, etc.

Chloefairydust · 10/11/2022 19:25

If I have been somewhere unsanitary and sat down somewhere really unhygienic then I would probably wash my jeans/leggings lol…

Saying that most places are very clean, especially the places you have given examples of, dentists I know wipe down the chair between every patient with disinfectant… I expect Drs surgery would do the same… A restaurant, unless your eating out in a complete dive I would hope to also be a clean place 😆… So generally no 🤨

Heatherjayne1972 · 10/11/2022 19:25

I work in a dental practice
our uniforms get cleaned after one use / day obviously as we get a lot of gross stuff on them every day

However currently sat in my civilian clothes which I’ve worn to work
home from work
round Tesco
round b+m
and to fetch my son

i will change/ wash my t shirt and undies but may well wear the same jeans tomorrow

Do you ever have anyone bar you inside your home?

Do they have to strip off into 'indoor' clothes upon entering? Or do you hand them a hazmat suit? Especially if they have sat on a seat that may have had someone else's clothed bottom on it.

slowquickstep · 10/11/2022 19:31

I change a fair few times a day everything gets dumped on my bed including bags and sometimes coats. At night i spend 5 minutes hanging everything up and putting it away. I don't have any rashes or other vile bugs that have made me ill.
My bedroom is as you come in the front door, so it is easy to just drop everything in there. Nobody died because they put their jeans covered arse on their bed.

toomuchlaundry · 10/11/2022 19:47

Do you have to change your clothes after having been in the garden even if just doing the bins or hanging out washing @Badbadbunny?

CryCeratops · 10/11/2022 19:48

I wouldn’t wash my clothes straight away unless they’d got mucky while I was at the dentist / doctors / restaurant.

Mucky as in, for example, I’d accidentally tipped my restaurant meal all over myself and my clothes got covered in sauce.
I wouldn’t count “what if someone else has sat on this chair since the last time it was cleaned and there’s invisible dirt” as mucky.

TurquoiseBeach · 10/11/2022 19:50

I don't OP.

Gwenhwyfar · 10/11/2022 19:51

No.
There are people who don't want outdoor clothes on the sofa. Just imagine how complicated that would make your life.
I wash my clothes when they need to be washed and not before!
Anything else is wasteful.

NCcoziwannaNC · 10/11/2022 19:52

No?
However if I've had a long hospital appointment i do. Only because i feel i smell of hospital. But in general no

carefulcalculator · 10/11/2022 20:03

I wear different trousers and a coat when I go out anyway so it isn't an issue.
When I was last in hospital I changed when I got back and put my things in the washing basket, I just wanted to not feel hospital-ish.

echt · 10/11/2022 21:56

I change clothes in the day if I've been doing heavy work in the garden. Even then they're often put in the laundry to be put back on the next day for more garden work. The idea of washing even such clothes after every wear is strange.

Some outdoor clothes are less comfy for vegging out at home, so I change after my volunteer work where I have to be a bit smarter, but not for cleanliness purposes.

Buzzinwithbez · 10/11/2022 22:15

I wash them when they need it. I spend too much time in crowds to worry about covid/germs.

The colour from jeans can run off onto chairs and sofas even after several washes, so this is the only consideration I give.

uncomfortablydumb53 · 10/11/2022 23:13

No. My dog sits on my lap after I've been outside, and I'll still happily rewear my jeans for a couple of days
I have been known to have an afternoon nap, with clothes on under my duvet too
There are germs everywhere, most are completely harmless

TwoMonthsOff · 10/11/2022 23:18

@Madeyoulook ’Dentist, doctor, and restaurant’ is a strange selection of situations. What about, for example library, supermarket, corner shop, work, public transport, DIY superstore, take away restaurant, car??

LadyAstor · 10/11/2022 23:40

I'm wondering if this is particular to a certain age group. I'm old and nobody I know is obsessed with germs.

We are all shoes on in the house, cats and dogs in the house, no indoor/outdoor clothes type people.

LadyAstor · 10/11/2022 23:43

Ive just remembered talking to someone who did the whole 'clothes washed/changed/showered after work' thing but he worked in care and had vomit and faeces thrown at him all day and night.

onlythreenow · 11/11/2022 04:21

You sound like a kindred spirit @LadyAstor. I agree, it seems to be mostly young people who have this obsession with washing and cleaning things. They obviously have too much time on their hands!

They are spending too much time watching people cleaning on instagram probably!

mydogisthebest · 11/11/2022 08:59

So people that don't wear outdoor clothes indoors do you change numerous times a day?

Yesterday I walked my dog then came home and had breakfast sitting on my sofa. I then went outside 4 times - once to the recycling bin, once to the freezer and twice to the tumble dryer. I then had lunch sitting on a dining chair. Then I went into my local town, came home had a coffee then took the dog out.

That means I would have been changing in out of clothes all day. I just wore the same jeans and jumper all day

thefamous5 · 11/11/2022 09:04

Nope.

And I have (diagnosed) OCD so germs and dirt are a big thing for me

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 11/11/2022 10:25

Same here, @LadyAstor .

I was once discussing with a colleague (we’re both now retired) this obsession of many younger people with germs/OTT-hygiene, and she said that now and then, when she couldn’t instantly find anything else, she’d wiped her children’s faces with the floor cloth. 😂
