Do you wash your clothes straight away if you have worn them to the dentist/doctor/restaurant?

It never occurred to me before the pandemic to do that but I am more aware of germs these days and I have also read on here about people not allowing ‘outdoor clothes’ on the bed which again would not have been on my radar. I would normally wear clothes again if they looked clean.

What do you do if the clothes are clean? Rewear them or wash them straight away?

I'm sure some people do. Maybe I would if I had someone in the house who was extremely vulnerable to germs.

I only wash my clothes if the look or smell like they need it

Pleiades2020 · 10/11/2022 10:19

Yes and no. Meaning I change from outdoor clothes when I get home but won't wash them immediately and will wear again. Dentist or Doctor though or flight or travel, I'd put those clothes straight in the laundry basket to be washed. We each have our foibles 😀

No. Sometimes think that the Eco protesters should quit the M25 and seek some Mumsnet washing machines to glue themselves to.

🤣🤣

Do the people who wash their clothes the minute they return from one of these apparently germ-infested places also wash their coat (assuming they've worn one) or have it dry-cleaned every single time?

Exactly.... shudders at thought of DH's suit only being cleaned once a year, or all our coats. Sod that, hang them up, bacteria and viruses dry off and die.

Just as an aside, washing clothes at 30c will not disinfect anyway, so a waste of time.

Hyperion100 · 10/11/2022 10:31

haha...no

you should commute on the london underground every day to have a benchmark for filth

Astrabees · 10/11/2022 10:34

I’m sitting on my bed at the moment in the clothes I have worn to clean half the house and walked the dog in. I can’t believe this would cause anyone any harm.

Spanielsarepainless · 10/11/2022 10:45

I'm lolling on the sofa in clothes I have walked the dogs in, am about to clean the bathroom in, and doubtless will eat my lunch in. I don't lick my clothes.

gogohmm · 10/11/2022 10:50

Er no, why would I? Different if I worked in a lab/toxic chemicals etc but no I work public facing anyway.

Tomorrow I'm going to a gig with 800 people!

gogohmm · 10/11/2022 10:52

I did draw the line at dp lying on the bed having just come back from running though!

bigbluebus · 10/11/2022 10:54

Erm no! Neither do I wash towels after every use - I hang them up to dry - and I don't change bedding weekly either - unless the weather is really hot.

xogossipgirlxo · 10/11/2022 11:26

No.

MollieMarie · 10/11/2022 11:30

I wouldn't wash them immediately but always change clothes when I get home. Wouldn't sit on my bed/sofa with the same clothes I'd worn sitting in a waiting room/public transport.

stuntbubbles · 10/11/2022 11:32

Don’t dentists wear coats over their clothes? And dental nurses are often in scrubs? Change of clothes to go home in that they wouldn’t then wash, surely?

I’m reminded a bit of Kay Scarpetta always going into her house via the garage so she can strip off and shove her mortuary clothes in the hot wash and shower off all the dead people before going inside her house to cook an Italian meal better than anyone else has ever done. All the killers always lurk in the garage too: they know.

It is completely demented to change your clothes after going to a restaurant, unless you frequent 1-star hygiene rating grub hubs with mice running around.

DahliaMacNamara · 10/11/2022 11:41

I'm struggling with the logic tbh, even allowing for obsessive cleanliness. You've already been in those clothes, so surely the (imaginary) damage is already done? Taking off very dirty or contaminated work clothes isn't the same.

amicissimma · 10/11/2022 11:53

There are claims on Mumsnet that people do some really strange things. It doesn't mean you need to do them too.

If someone posted that they drank a little arsenic everyday and found they were much better for it, would you copy them?

horsemama · 10/11/2022 12:00

The only time I come home and put my clothes straight into the wash is when I've been to A&E

loulouljh · 10/11/2022 12:45

No! Why on earth would I do that???

DobbyTheHouseElk · 10/11/2022 14:41

DobbyTheHouseElk · 10/11/2022 07:55

I do, but I’m not normal.

I don’t wash them immediately, but they certainly do get washed. I try to wear clothes that are needing to be washed, rather than totally clean on that day. So jeans that have previously been worn.

I know I’m bonkers, I wish I could be more normal.

I haven’t been diagnosed. No need. I know I’m weird!

A walk in the woods, mud on my clothes. No I don’t wash them immediately.

The Dr’s. Yes definitely.

Honestly this thread is helping me.

For me I wear previously dirtied clothes that need a wash, no stains or smells. To the Dr. So I’m not creating washing unnecessarily.

Ninananna · 10/11/2022 14:58

I wash all my clothes after one wear.

KnittedCardi · 10/11/2022 15:07

Ninananna · 10/11/2022 14:58

I wash all my clothes after one wear.

No you don't. I bet you wear coats without washing them.

toomuchlaundry · 10/11/2022 15:08

@Ninananna why? Does that include jumpers, coats? Do you clean your shoes every time you wear them? How about towels and bedding?

CarPoor · 10/11/2022 15:13

No, absolutely not.

If I've worn clothes and they are dirty I will wash them. Generally this would be one full days wear for a top but longer for a bottom. I wouldn't get into my bed in outdoor clothes but I don't change out of them as soon as I get home. I don't see why I'm supposed to not get ill wearing them out all day but as soon as I get home suddenly that's when they become toxic

Maybe if I had an extraction that involved actual blood I would change my clothes.

Theskyisfallingdown · 10/11/2022 15:14

I bet dentists wash their clothes every day!
🥴 I’d imagine that was searingly obvious, yes. Being sprayed with peoples spit, pus and blood all day would indeed require clothes to be washed.

Don’t think anyone without OCD/anxiety would think they can catch diseases from clothes.

Badbadbunny · 10/11/2022 18:49

I don't wear "outside" clothes in the house because I don't want my sofa, bed, chairs, etc getting mucky with dirt, nothing to do with germs, etc. I wear "indoor" clothes in the house with havn't been outdoors, and as a result, my sofas last decades, as does my bed/duvet cover, cushions, dining chairs, etc. - I've had them 20+ years and they still look good as new, without intensive cleaning etc.

Sitting anywhere where lots of people have previously sat just puts dirt onto your clothes which transfers to your furniture and soft furnishings. Try slapping a seat on a train or bus and you'll see a cloud of dust/dirt. Why would you want to transfer that to your expensive furniture?
