How many loads of washing do you do a week

Boring I know but I’m just trying to figure out if I’m doing an excessive amount and how to cut down.

One adult, two teenagers and a one-year-old. I would say I do around 14-18 washes a week. Normal?

OMG @DoubleShotEspresso you would faint at our school - PE kit stays at school for an entire half term, so it only gets washed in the holidays 😂

🤢 I'm sorry but that just made me feel nauseous reading it . You're surely joking?

I washed DS's sixth form suit trousers for the first time at half term. He wears them four days a week, changes when he gets home and hangs them up straight away. He has a second pair so could have put them in the wash at any point if they'd needed it. They were a bit creased on the back of the knees, that was it.

This was the case at my DC’s previous primary school! They’d bring it back every half term for washing.

PE kit at school for half a term at primary is pretty standard isn't it? Mine always did that

Bananalanacake · 07/11/2022 19:32

I am also a big believer in wearing things several times before they need a wash. Family of 2 adults and 2 girls under 8, I average 5 loads a week, 2 of dark stuff, light clothes every 10 to 12 days, bedding every 3 weeks, DH's pants and pyjamas every 10 days, towels are used over a week before they need a wash. Now that awful hot weather is over I wear tops and trousers 3 times before they need a wash, my dd's clothes get worn at least twice. I wonder with the cost of electricity rising will some people think twice before washing clothes they have worn for a few hours, and towels after one use.

Is at ours.

CambsAlways · 07/11/2022 19:40

I think that’s about right well would be for me if there was four of us at home, depends what size your washing machine load is, mines a 9kg you’ve got 4 lots of bedding for start, towels etc, I think I’d be doing around 15 loads with your household,

Sunnydayz · 07/11/2022 19:49

2 adults 1 baby
2 or 3 washes a week

9kg washing machine
baby has loads of clothes and muslins so I can always wait until I have a full load to wash his stuff
I’m on Mat leave so no worry about work clothes for me
wash stuff only when dirty, I might wear a dress or top 3 or 4 times (I’m breast feeding so only have strappy tops and dresses that don’t cover my arm pits, anything that touches a pit gets washed after one wear!)
If I know my next load is a light colour load I’ll try pick light coloured tops and underwear to wear until that wash goes in.
my partner doesn’t seem to go through stuff quickly either

decided against reusable nappy’s due to amount of washing needed

madness the figures on here
I reckon some people try something on decide they don’t want to wear it, chuck it on the floor, a few days later it ends up in the wash basket having not been worn

Mañanarama · 07/11/2022 20:05

PE kits in most schools are worn for 2-3 hours per week. At ours it’s one indoor lesson and one outdoor per week. They are shoved in rucksacks and get creased. There is literally no point washing (or, heaven forbid, ironing) them unless they stink or are filthy.

NoEffingWay · 07/11/2022 20:17

About 10 loads a week I think, but this is part due to us all doing lots of sport and DP wears a uniform for work which needs laundering every time (healthcare)

I checked today and ours is only 7kg- so I feel slightly less insane/obsessive having realised this in light of this thread!

But surely if you visit the gym /go jogging for an hour you wash your own kit? I'm truly stunned anybody let's their kids wear grotty PE kit that's sat in a bag stinking all week ?!

Athenen0ctua · 07/11/2022 20:22

My machine is 7kg and fits a week's worth of clothes for two people, or both towels plus one set of bedding.

Stevie6 · 07/11/2022 20:33

@DoubleShotEspresso gets better at high school, they do an hour PE and aren't allowed to shower, we were forced to with the teacher having a tick list back in the 90s

DS 16 puts shorts and t-shirt straight in the wash after sport, it's intensive for a full hour and he stinks. School sport involved much less activity, even primary school sport wasn't any different to running around at break time. His kit lasted half a term unless he fell in the mud and didn't smell.

Well one load wouldn't do a weeks washing of clothes here- I doubt they would do school uniform and Pe kit tbh. And I assume you split whites from darker clothes? So that's at least two. One set of bedding fills my machine I'd never fit all the towels in but always do them alone as I add a disinfectant solution thing to towels

As I said, there are only two of us. We don't have any whites, everything is fine together. Our two towels hardly take up any space and will fit with my double bedding. What Is the disinfectant for?

PrincessofWellies · 07/11/2022 21:12

Do people really wash bedding weekly? Why?

So you're using washing powder, water, electricity, to wash, then half the people probably a tumble dryer so more electricity.

It's a ridiculous and total disregard for our planet and very worrying.

ivfbabymomma1 · 07/11/2022 21:12

2 adults, an infant & 3 dogs.

About 6 washes a week for us - bedding, towels, 2 for DS, a dark & a light for us

1 wash a week for the dogs blankets

TheTeddyBears · 07/11/2022 21:19

I was probably similar. 2 adults and 2 kids age 5 and 2. I've cut right down. I used to wash all pjs after one wear now it's 2 wears. I'm now looking at clothes to check if they are dirty I always just washed everything after one wear. I mostly do one a day sometimes 2 if doing bedding or towels. I'd say I maybe do about 9-10 a week now.

I cut down mainly because of the cost of the tumble dryer and general cost of washing machine (electricity and tablets/fabric conditioner).

Newpuppymummy · 07/11/2022 13:10

How are coats dirty? Erm little one falls over on daily walks and gets mud on himself.

sofa throws get drool from toddler/dog hair etc

But just hang it on the coat hanger and brush the mud off when it's dry, or get a sponge and sponge it, it takes 30 seconds.

We do it on rotation. Towels plus my bedding, towels plus DS's bedding, towels plus bathmats etc. Bedding works out as about once a month.

Foronenightonly22 · 07/11/2022 21:26

Countless. At least 1 a day and flat out at weekend. 2 adults 3 kids, cat dog and numerous farm animals.

DoubleShotEspresso · 07/11/2022 21:26

@Athenen0ctua disinfectant is for towels .... we have more than 2

GreenDanglyearrings · 07/11/2022 21:27

About 8-10 pw. This is 2 adults, 3 teenagers and a dog. We also Airbnb our annexe so this takes 1-2 of the loads pw
