Posh hotels in the UK (dreaming)

EnterFunnyNameHere · 05/11/2022 11:37

My lovely DH has a landmark birthday next year and I've been idly dreaming of somewhere posh I could whisk him away for a couple of nights.

Obviohave no idea if I'll be able to afford anything by the time it rolls around, but it's nice to daydream regardless! So if anyone has stayed anywhere fancy and rated it, and especially places which do fab food, I'd be really grateful to hear them 😊

One from me to start, we have stayed at The Gilpin in the Lakes many years ago - that was amazing! Food, room, service, the whole shebang!!

The Witchery, Edinburgh

Puddywoodycat · 05/11/2022 22:18

I've not stayed at the pig but been to a few/bar and casual eating..

Whilst the scenery was stunning I found the staff not quite on par with the setting, eg I innocently asked for processeco and was told with a real tone " that they only do English Sparkling wine" same with their flat bread I didn't understand what they were and had this long convoluted explaination which lead us back to
...it's a pizza.
Hard work and pretentious.

As a treat, my partner and I stayed at the Langham a few Saturdays ago. (We ate at Quo Vadis.) We live in the Square Mile, so it felt very decadent to stay in a hotel in the West End!

It's one of my favourites, hope you enjoyed it. Not tried Quo Vadim - would you recommend?
I've always got a soft spot for The Tower Hotel because of the views, but I've gone off it recently.
Loved the Picadilly - petals on the bed, and towel animals.

The Gotham in Manchester is lovely. I've also stayed at The Buxton Crescent Hotel and Spa for my hubbies 50th - he absolutely loved it, gorgeous rooftop pool!!

@JW13

Ooh, glad to see this. We stayed right after they opened and it was all a bit, sort of, chilly. But we've been thinking about giving it another try. It's so beautiful!

JW13 · 05/11/2022 23:26

@Mummyford I've been a couple of times and love it. The service is good but understated. It never feels busy. We took our son and that was less relaxing than going by ourselves! The spa is great. I need to go back but it's expensive!

hidethexylophone · 05/11/2022 23:36

Dormy House in Broadway is beautiful.

It's not super posh or even that expensive, but Stratton's Hotel in Norfolk is pretty special. Particularly the Red Room which is enormous with an open fireplace and a private courtyard. The food is exceptional.

I've been there! In that room!! The night after our wedding before we did the drive to the Lakes 😀(our honeymoon was a bit of a random mix of stays in hotels/cottages). It was a lovely room, the bathroom was incredible. It was really quiet when we were there though so the evening atmosphere was a bit odd...

I think I need to do a list of all these great diets and map out locations / rough costs etc haha It's really helpful though, and nice to dream of fun future times to come!

We also stayed there for our wedding! We've returned several times since for anniversaries and occasions. It's still run by the same owners, such a lovely place.

Throughabushbackwards · 06/11/2022 10:38

Should say - we have no idea about the evening atmosphere because we've always lot the fire and had room service!

TheDogsMother · 06/11/2022 13:12

There's a few Pig hotels now. They are the more casual sister hotels to Limewood and the most recent has opened on the outskirts of Arundel in a beautiful spot with their own vineyards.

Mindgone · 06/11/2022 13:58

Marking my place, as so many interesting recommendations here, thanks very much 😊

sunshinerainstorm · 06/11/2022 13:58

Rudding park 100 %
Le manoir Highly reccomend
Seen rockliffe hall mentioned wouldnt recommend. Facilities are tired. Service lacking. Not a patch on Rudding park.

Darkchocolateandcoffee · 05/11/2022 18:41

I would only do one night at Le Manoir

Claridge's

Hambleton Hall in Rutland

Another vote here for Hambleton Hall. I’ve been many times, and it’s always special.

I consider the biggest extravangance of our wedding to have been the hotel I spend the night before at (paid myself) and DH and I spent our wedding night at (my mum paid for that night) - Barnsley House in Gloucestershire www.barnsleyhouse.com/

You can tell it's super upper crust because as DH and I ate breakfast the morning and the ladies next to us were talking about the benefits of private jets.

Stunning gardens and amazing breakfast - great service, as you'd expect at the price. We want to book it again on a special anniversary; I looked about 6 months before our 10th but it was already booked up. Maybe in another 5 years for our 20th!

Just had a look at your link as I hadn't heard of this one. In the scheme of things its actually quite cheap (compared to some others on the thread I mean). Looks lovely and I will bear this in mind for a special occasion.

MummyJ12 · 07/11/2022 09:24

Grantley Hall is the best hotel I’ve ever stayed in. Other pps have already mentioned it. It’s absolute heaven! The spa, restaurants and rooms are all incredible. The only problem is having to leave!

MissMarpleRocks · 07/11/2022 09:47

Have stayed at Chewton Glen a couple of times & always feels to be something missing. Prefer Lucknam Park.

My fave London hotel is the Shangri- La for the views. My fave for service is Savoy. My fave for bar One Aldwych.

Love Le Manoir but rate the Waterside Inn as highly.

Lympstone Manor, Thornbury Castle are fab.

Also Lords of the manor if you are taking your dog with you. Always feel like we’ve arrived home.

Nare Hotel is lovely. Proper old fashioned lovely.

Making notes for the others!

DialSquare · 07/11/2022 09:55

I love both Le Manoir and The Waterside Inn (my favourite restaurant of all) but Gleneagles has more to offer over a few days in my opinion.

LadyEloise1 · 07/11/2022 15:49

I'm going to save this thread in case I win the lottery.
😀

Snoodleberry · 07/11/2022 16:13

Look at Pride of Britain hotels, it’s like a marketing group for independently owned hotels and most mentioned on here are in that group.

We got some Pride of Britain hotel vouchers for our wedding present from my godmother and it was so nice choosing a hotel we wanted to stay in (we chose Grantley Hall, was so posh and lovely. They gave us champagne in our room and a lovely upgrade).

Ooh I loved Barnsley House!

Also really liked Limewood.

I’ve heard good things about The Tawny in Staffordshire.

Back in the day I used to organise work events at Clivedon - it’s beautiful, old fashioned glamour. But don’t think I’d pay the prices they charge these days.
