Posh hotels in the UK (dreaming)

My lovely DH has a landmark birthday next year and I've been idly dreaming of somewhere posh I could whisk him away for a couple of nights.

Obviohave no idea if I'll be able to afford anything by the time it rolls around, but it's nice to daydream regardless! So if anyone has stayed anywhere fancy and rated it, and especially places which do fab food, I'd be really grateful to hear them 😊

One from me to start, we have stayed at The Gilpin in the Lakes many years ago - that was amazing! Food, room, service, the whole shebang!!

There is a Pig near Swanage and one near Honiton

WinniePig · 05/11/2022 17:24

Grantley Hall in the Yorkshire Dales.

The Cornwall that Boris stayed in looks amazing.

We stayed at this hotel every year when I was a child,it’s The Carbis Bay Hotel . It really was very special and fabulous view from every window.

Burgh island is very special and great fun.

Le Manoir hands down

Agree with this, @SeasonFinale

I like the Pigs, they have a lovely feel, but they're not in the same category.

Lucknam Park
Heckfield Place

yogiil · 05/11/2022 17:39

@Shouldawouldacoulda30 lucky you!

SaffyWall · 05/11/2022 17:39

Swinton Estate in North Yorkshire is a treat! And I've heard good things about Rudding Park too.

ThePuma · 05/11/2022 17:57

Limewood and The Scarlet are great but my favourite is Gara Rock.

Beebumble2 · 05/11/2022 18:02

Another vote for Le Manoir aux Quat’Saisons, nowhere compares.

17CherryTreeLane · 05/11/2022 18:04

Not super posh, but I do like The Old Course in St Andrews

Unbearablebare · 05/11/2022 18:05

Are any of these suitable for well-behaved children please?

Emmalou0607 · 05/11/2022 18:13

@Unbearablebare definitely chewton glen. They put things on especially for kids and one of the treehouses is designed for families with kids

NannyGythaOgg · 05/11/2022 18:14

Foxhilll Manor, Broadway.

Way out of my league under normal circumstances but my brother booked it for his and his wife's 50th wedding anniversary. Absolutely amazing. Very relaxed, beautiful countryside (400 acre private estate). The staff were so unobtrusive but instantly attentive to any desire. The food is also to die for. Their head chef was a quarter finalist in MasterChef The Professionals.

I'll never get to go again but I suppose that's kind of what makes it so special. The weekend cost my brother more than my annual income. Amazing, from the champagne in the lounge at arrival to the very last moment.

Carriemac · 05/11/2022 18:17

liimewwod is the coolest, le manoir it is the fanciest , the torridon is amazing but very far north

seaham hall were horrible to us when one of my kids cut their door in the pool, accused us of staging it .

Clardiges is the best london one for treating guests as royalty no matter how shabby your luggage

Unbearablebare · 05/11/2022 18:19

@Emmalou0607 Thanks!

Startuplife · 05/11/2022 18:21

Not as posh as some of these but we loved The Fish in the Cotswolds. We did their NYE package of a 2 night stay and everything was so so perfect. Highly recommend one of the hideaway huts.

eldorado02 · 05/11/2022 18:21

Rudding Park in Harrogate was incredible. Huuuuge room with our own steam room in the bathroom, lovely spa, yummy food, very chilled out atmosphere. Staff deferential without being obsequious! Sheer bliss. I long to go back, childfree.

JemimaTab · 05/11/2022 18:21

Really special ones (pricy though) are:
Waterside Inn, Bray near Maidenhead
Le Manoir, Oxfordshire
Northcote, Lancashire
Linthwaite House, Windermere
Grosvenor Hotel, Chester

Another one that I love is Hazlitt’s, a gorgeous Georgian town-house hotel in Soho, London. It doesn’t have a restaurant (just a room-service menu - and an honesty bar/lounge), but it’s in Soho so you’re surrounded by bars and restaurants. Plus once you’re back in the hotel, it is so quiet you wouldn’t know you’re in the middle of London.

Lurkerlot · 05/11/2022 18:24

Le Manoir I love The Belmond brand.

The Thyme in the Cotswolds is a lovely, village within a village experience.
and Inverlochy Castle is an amazing stay.

newtb · 05/11/2022 18:37

Linden Hall at Longhorsley near Morpeth. Went many years ago with our reward points. It was b&b and dinner - free choice from the menu. I was given a menu without prices, so had to look at dh's to make sure I was getting my money's worth.

Decafflatteplease · 05/11/2022 18:39

McDonald hotels are lovely. Especially the Scottish ones we used to frequently stay at the Edinburgh ones for weekend pre children days.

Darkchocolateandcoffee · 05/11/2022 18:41

I would only do one night at Le Manoir

Claridge's

Hambleton Hall in Rutland

Wow! Overwhelmed with all the ideas, thanks everyone!! Need to make some notes and do some googling!

I’m here looking for inspiration! A couple of people have mentioned the Scarelt, but it’s really not as it was. I was so disappointed the last time I went.
