Has anyone else struggled with the new Duolingo?

I’ve been happily using it for months and then it changed overnight. From what I’ve found out through googling it, it seems like they’ve been rolling out this new version since August.

I learn through repetition and I feel really lost with the new set up. It seems to assume I know stuff that it’s not covered at all.

I've discovered I have the new version on the website, but the old version on the app.

So far I don't mind the new version.

CantSleepCountingSheep · 05/11/2022 05:16

Can anyone tell me how to get set up with the free dualingo? I have no clue. But love the idea.

Mummieslncorporated · 05/11/2022 05:42

Just search for Duolingo online or in the app store and open an account. It's very straightforward.

BestIsWest · 05/11/2022 12:56

What I’m finding frustrating is that each step on the new version has a legendary status - each legendary status has 8 parts and each costs 100 gems. I’m doing the free Welsh version and quite a way into the course - on step 68 with a 1029 day streak.

So in order to complete legendary status so far I’d need 68 * 800 gems (around 50000 I think). But I only have a few hundred gems and have no idea how to earn that many.

I know I can buy gems but don’t want to. I’m hoping this move isn’t designed to force people like me onto the paid model.

The removal of the 'cracked' skills feature, which gave you the encouragement to revist past lessons, is a shame. I expect it's due to the Duolingo Plus paid subscription offering more personalised revision. We see what you're doing, Duolingo!

transformandriseup · 06/11/2022 05:49

I think the new version is not that bad and I think the key phrases are a good idea. The only problem is it's apparently lost my place as I have been put back to where I was months ago with phrases/words that I have learned now greyed out.

Changechangychange · 06/11/2022 22:39

I hate the new version but for the opposite reason to a lot of you - I was doing a language I already speak quite well, was on chapter 5 of 6, and now have suddenly gone from practising the subjunctive to repeating stuff I did pre-GCSE 30 years ago. Right back to stage 33 of 114, and no way to jump ahead/level up.

Ughnamechange256 · 06/11/2022 23:38

I hate it. It seems to be assuming I know words that I’ve definitely never encountered before. My only option seems to be going back and practising old lessons for 5xp each, which is extremely demotivating. It might be a good format if you’re starting from scratch, but I’m 6 months into this language now and am feeling more lost than I’ve ever felt with it

MrsPatrickDempsey · 06/11/2022 23:48

Please can someone clarify what happens when you complete your daily quest? Do you get a reward? I nearly always do mine but I don't get any benefit. I am missing something?

longfishbagel · 06/11/2022 23:51

I logged on yesterday to start a new language. I have no idea what is going on.It’s confusing and it doesn’t explain it anywhere.

chocohoardersanonymous · 05/11/2022 00:46

Mine changed to the new version several weeks ago and I noticed that the grammar tips were missing for some languages. Anyway, after a lot of searching, I found a link that can be used to access the old format. Hope this helps: www-internal.duolingo.com/learn

Thank you so much for this!
I've been doing Duolingo without missing a single day since mid 2016 - not the same language throughout:-).
They've made so many changes in that period, most of them for the worse, but this is by far the worst change to date.

ArabeI · 07/11/2022 11:27

It seems to be tailored to you more (unless that's just the paid version). Though I do find they're introducing new things, or words, not yet covered, in challenges.

I'm not sure I'm as keen on the legendary thing for each lesson yet.

I get gems for each completed section of the daily quest.

I wouldn't mind if it was cheaper in gems or needed fewer attempts.

They can set it up as improved learning all they want but it's clearly about money!

Diplidocus4 · 07/11/2022 11:44

Not keen as used the cracked tiles as a quick lesson!
I've tried the unlimited ♥️ link and it keeps saying unable to connect to Duolingo even with my code 🙁

LaurelGrove · 07/11/2022 11:48

I have been struggling with it for a while. I liked the ability to manage and balance the difficulty and that’s gone now. There also doesn’t seem to be any real progress – I’m about 90% of the way through the Spanish course and can’t see that I am actually learning anything new at this point whereas before it was clear to me when new concepts were being introduced. It seems to have got easier, too, and I am reasonably confident that isn’t because I have become a Spanish super genius.

psychomath · 07/11/2022 11:50

I don't mind the path format but it's really annoying that they haven't transferred the tips and notes sections over, and I'm also having to redo a bunch of stuff I've already covered to get back to where I was up to on the tree. It seems like they brought this update out before it was ready.

DietCokeExtraIce · 07/11/2022 11:58

I'm struggling with it too, I've had to go quite far back to get up to legendary level on the ones at the beginning even though I was nearly finished unit 2....

DeepSleepPillowSpray · 07/11/2022 12:26

I really hate it. I can’t see where I’m up to now - previously I was working my way up through the colours/levels, now the entire path is gold which would have been level 5…
I also hate that each practice is only worth 5xp and takes hearts off you for a mistake which the previous practice/cracked ones didn’t. It really really sucks donkey balls.

Try doing the challenges on the website instead of the app. They’re 10 lingots each that way & I found I had a lot of lingots saved up.

RoachTheHorse · 07/11/2022 12:45

Thanks for the tip @EmpressaurusOfWitchesBackFromTheDead

Will do!

Diplidocus4 · 07/11/2022 23:53

I also seem to have lost the weekly challenge ? Matching words ? Angry

larkstar · 08/11/2022 00:01

Ahhh - I now see the problem. My iPad updated itself automatically to the path model but the apps on my andoid phone aren't allowed to automatically update. This looks like a radical change.

Foxfeeder · 10/11/2022 11:19

Another person here using the free version. I’d built up a reasonable amount of gems to keep me getting past legendary for most lessons, mostly by getting one lesson in before 12 then practicing again in the evening with an early bird reward and doing legendary steps in the evening but…

I’m not sure if it’s just the level I am at but now with legendary you don’t get to make ANY mistakes (rather than the three you could have previously). Is this the case for everyone and at every stage? In which case, it’s definitely a money making change.

Does anyone know what happens if you have Superlingo (I might have tuned out the name as I ignore the adverts for the most part). Is it the same for legendary lessons?

Super lingo is the paid version? Yes, we still have the three hearts on legendary. Unlimited hearts on normal lessons.
