What the hell is this?

I constantly have scratch marks on my upper back/ neck. They’re deep enough that they last a few days at a time and you can see and feel them.

But, the thing is, I definitely don’t scratch my neck during waking hours or remember ever being itchy there. Why would I be scratching to the point of breaking the skin ONLY in my sleep and also not remembering it? It’s a mystery….any suggestions?

@Mañanarama no!

There’s no such thing as a Gruffalo

Somethingsnappy · 03/11/2022 20:39

Have you been clawing at yourself subconsciously in an agony of frustration, because you predicted the useless answers us lovely mumsnetters would give you to any future dilemma?

Well it's just that if you're asking for help identifying the origin of the scratches, a photo might be helpful OP.

You beat me to it! @Scratchnoitch There is a medical condition that presents like this so that's why on earth I suggested a photo of scratches.

I usually have scratches on my upper back and neck just like those in the diagram. I was completely confused by it, so asked my husband what could be causing it. And lo, it was an owl.

Boringly, it turns out I scratch my back a lot more often and a lot harder than the average person, but I don't really know I'm doing it. I love the feeling a bit too much and actually break the skin sometimes.

GrannyAchingsShepherdsHut · 03/11/2022 20:46

Are you generally frustrated by people OP? Not just on this thread I read somewhere once that people subconsciously rub the back of their neck when they're resisting the urge to punch someone. Do you refrain from flattening people a lot?

Although I suppose the alternative is to lamp someone. That's perhaps not without its own issues.

Perhaps practice on the bison, it'll be big enough not to notice being pummelled I reckon.

SusancallmeSue · 03/11/2022 20:47

OP you have an incubus. Probably.

OrangePomander · 03/11/2022 20:49

Does it only happen at full moon?
Just wondering if your DH has werewolf tendencies.

CherrySocks · 03/11/2022 20:54

Itchy dandruff falling onto your shoulders in the night time?

Presumably you wear more clothes on your top half during the day.

onepieceoflollipop · 03/11/2022 20:56

I’m going to give a really sensible and boring answer, sorry. I’ll try to put a silly bit on the end as I don’t want to let the thread down!

when I am very tired I get itchy, often feet and lower legs but also my back.
I think it is worse in winter as skin is drier.
so I my case I occasionally scratch in my sleep.
I notice the next day when I start to get itchy in the evening. For example my bra is now rubbing me and when I rub the skin I can feel slight scratches.

(and sometimes the hedgehogs in my bedroom add a few little scratches)

A Gruffalo is a creature with terrible claws and terrible teeth in his terrible jaws.
He has knobbly knees, and turned-out toes, And a poisonous wart at the end of his nose. His eyes are orange, his tongue is black, he has purple prickles all over his back.

I mean, many of those characteristics could cause scratches so let’s not rule it out just yet.

Well given his favourite food is OP ice cream it might not be the Gruffalo as there are no bite marks with the scratches.

😂

PinkButtercups · 03/11/2022 21:06

I bet it's that Somerset gimp.

Coming in to give you a little tickle before bed, leaving his mark.

SeeSawDaw · 03/11/2022 21:11

Sandpapering gruffalo with his pet sloth riding on a bison? (Shit, forgot the witches broom - where could that fit...?)

Newpuppymummy · 03/11/2022 21:13

nits?

WashAsDelicates · 03/11/2022 21:13

Are you left-handed, OP?

Saisong · 03/11/2022 21:15

Have you ruled out ferrets?

Scrabbly little bastards.

AlwaysLatte · 03/11/2022 21:15

Are you wearing a ring in bed?

OrangePomander · 03/11/2022 21:17

AlwaysLatte · 03/11/2022 21:15

Are you wearing a ring in bed?

If it’s THE ring it could be Smeagle

OrangePomander · 03/11/2022 21:18

*Smeagol, alias Gollum

Scratchnoitch · 03/11/2022 21:24

slow down poirots so many questions!

There is a medical condition that presents like this so that's why on earth I suggested a photo of scratches I’m not posting a picture of my scratches on the internet - wants the condition? Are you a specialist in it? If so, what fate!

@GrannyAchingsShepherdsHut i am a peaceful person although most people are indeed fuckwits so maybe that is it.

@PinkButtercups Somerset gimp? A mate of yours?

no husbands, no rings, no ferrets, no nits, no dandruffs. (Perhaps a small ferret but he’s no bother)

😂😂😂

TitilatedOcelot · 03/11/2022 21:34

Spiders? Apparently the really spindly bastard have fangs that aren't strong enough to break human skin, but I bet they could give you a scratch if they really tried.

There is no washing out for them to rub their willies on, so they have come inside to play instead

That or crap vampires.

Sorry.

PinkButtercups · 03/11/2022 21:35

@Scratchnoitch Yeah we often go out gimping together. Double trouble.

Frieya · 03/11/2022 21:37

v odd only thing that comes to mind is could you be a character in a story book I’m thinking jekyll and hyde

Seebee · 03/11/2022 21:38
