How on earth do you discourage a cat from doing something?

This bloody thing is only a few months old and he's absolutely launching himself on my desk, on my chair, growling at me, attacking my hand while I use my mouse, attacking my wrists while I type, stealing my lunch/snacks and full on growling/spitting/hissing at me whilst doing it. He will run from one end of the room and launch himself onto the side of my desk chair, knocks over my coffee cup, has eaten my desk plant, knocks over my filing tray.. the list is endless. He does this to no one else, there are 5 of us in the office and it's just me.

I swapped desks just to get some work done and then he's all calm, sitting in his corner and not on my desk, nor near me. Then the second I moved back to my own, he's back again doing all of the above!

I feel completely pathetic and, quite frankly, bullied! What can I do to get him to leave me the hell alone?

Oh those lovely little ginger ears and that tail.

PorridgePowered · 07/11/2022 15:43

I mean, he's adorable. And a complete demon. A food related toy might be an idea. Plus try to play with him fairly often when he is being 'good'. When we got my most recent dog I couldn't walk around without shoes or slippers for about 4 months. He pounced on my feet every time I moved. Now he naps at my feet when I sit at my desk.

Sounds to me like the cat is playing. Maybe buy the cat some toys or even if you have an old shoelace to trail along the floor?

Give the cat appropriate toys to refocus its energy and tire it out. And don’t worry cats get calmer as they get older. But you can’t really train a cat like you would a dog. You just have to persuade it that there’s less destructive more fun things to do. So positive reinforcement. Also a cat tree/ cat scratching post is good.

My auntie also had behaviour issues with her cat and bought one of those feliway, plug in things. Her cat is like a completely different cat now.

He's beautiful! Now, find/buy some catnip. The loose leaf stuff that looks highly illegal but isn't. Put some elsewhere in the office. Rinse hands carefully to remove scent. Hopefully he will leave you alone and go for the drugs.

I do feel for you as our part-Silver Bengal thought DH was a climbing frame/scratching post when she was that age. His legs are still covered in scars, as is his nose from where she grabbed a huge piece of pizza and caught him with her claws.

If the drugs don't work, I too favour a kong toy filled with treats that you can hide / fling away from you.

And also want another pic of Caspar the Crafty

Oh my goodness, the little horror is so cute!

Thiscatwillbethedeathofme · 07/11/2022 21:56

He let me stroke him today AND he licked my hand for about 10 minutes, so maybe he's improving. He also tried to steal my salad (god knows why) and hissed at my bread, though. I'll pick up a cat toy next time I'm at the garden centre and see if that helps. We've got a little light/laser thing we use with the bigger cats and he really liked it too, so tried to tire him out a bit.

You're clearly using his desk. Use another one. This will solve the bullying issue (I agree that he!xs bullying you btw).

IamaBluebird · 07/11/2022 23:14

He’s so cute, how can you be cross with that little face looking at you.
Dont know if anyone has mentioned , be careful with your choice of house plants. Lots are toxic to cats.

Thiscatwillbethedeathofme · 08/11/2022 08:43

Its actually very easy to be angry at that cute little face when he's looking at you like you're dinner and then knocks over your coffee out of nothing but spite. Yep am informed on the bad plants for cats thankfully, thank you!
