How on earth do you discourage a cat from doing something?

This bloody thing is only a few months old and he's absolutely launching himself on my desk, on my chair, growling at me, attacking my hand while I use my mouse, attacking my wrists while I type, stealing my lunch/snacks and full on growling/spitting/hissing at me whilst doing it. He will run from one end of the room and launch himself onto the side of my desk chair, knocks over my coffee cup, has eaten my desk plant, knocks over my filing tray.. the list is endless. He does this to no one else, there are 5 of us in the office and it's just me.

I swapped desks just to get some work done and then he's all calm, sitting in his corner and not on my desk, nor near me. Then the second I moved back to my own, he's back again doing all of the above!

I feel completely pathetic and, quite frankly, bullied! What can I do to get him to leave me the hell alone?

Own up, who hung the rubber bands over his ears?
He's very cute, and you are clearly showing off that you have an office kitten who you adore but are pretending otherwise

I see it was dumped, I think it’s part or full snow Bengal which is unusual to dump but they are the husky of the cat world and never ever give up. Or change.

I'm not seeing snow Bengal at all, possibly Turkish Angora.

Bobshhh · 31/10/2022 15:04

On my goodness he's absolutely adorable!

Mine are four and still snatch biscuits, so I cannot give any advice as I give in too easily.

On the name thing...my 2 think their middle name is "din-dins" 🤦‍♀️
The only suggestion I have is get the vet to take his balls off, that should calm him down. Oh, and tin foil, being unwound shaken a bit and torn off the roll scares the bejesus out of mine.

I agree with this. My daughter's cat thought he was called NO! He didn't respond properly to his given name until two years of age. But shout out NO! to burning toast or opposing team scoring a goal and suddenly a grey fluffball would appear. Ooops Blush

😆 we are probably guilty of this too!

I had a book about hamsters. It said offer the hamster a bit of food and say its name, and the hamster will come to understand that it's name refers to it. Even age 8 I thought err, no, we're just teaching Errol to think "Errol" is the word for food.

Ah well, since the kitten is always hungry and usually bring naughty, it makes no odds 😂

Klarwen · 31/10/2022 15:06

grr *its name.

Autocorrect is altogether too fond of grocer's comma's.

diddl · 31/10/2022 15:14

Will he not be being neutered before he's allowed out?

Beancounter1 · 31/10/2022 15:20

I would suggest not having anything to eat or drink on your desk. Put your lunch elsewhere, then eat it away from your desk.

Armadillidium · 31/10/2022 15:49

I second Jackson Galaxy. He truly is a cat whisperer.

xogossipgirlxo · 31/10/2022 15:58

He's cute. Sorry, I don't believe your accusations 😂
I agree, you should watch Jackson Galaxy videos. Please don't fall for stupid idea of water spray/pistols.

LaGioconda · 31/10/2022 15:58

Can't move permanently because there are no other desks, I just went and sat in a corner on a very small table cause I couldn't take it anymore.

Rearrange all the desks into a different .configuration

sunshinesupermum · 31/10/2022 16:02

He is gorgeous!

SusGus · 31/10/2022 16:02

I’m sorry OP but this made me laugh. Kittens are legit psychopaths and it will chill out in time, and it sounds like he might like you! Seems like a great place to work tbh!

WireSkills · 31/10/2022 16:03

Deffo waterspray. I had to resort to it one particularly annoying day with my cat. I've literally only sprayed her once in 2 years and now all I have to do is touch the bottle and she stops being naughty!

I do think the attention means that you're his favourite!

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 31/10/2022 16:04

He needs playing with, pouncing toys, feathers, toys on strings . He needs to get properly out of breath and then he'll curl up and sleep.

CornedBeef451 · 31/10/2022 16:04

He's gorgeous!

I had two gorgeous maniacs with very sharp claws while WAH over lockdown.

Best thing I found was a toy on a fishing line type thing so I could flick it about and wear them out but, crucially, it was far away from me at the end of a pole.

Also a water spray when I was desperate, lots of boxes and tall scratching posts/high beds but strategically placed so they couldn't jump onto my desk from them. And at one point I built a protective barrier around my desk to try to stop all the cats climbing on it and claiming my keyboard as their own.

He'll grow out of it soon but it might be a trying time. Good luck!

WireSkills · 31/10/2022 16:06

BTW I know water spray is mean, but sometimes there is literally nothing that will work - they are the absolute definition of stubborn!

Lula74 · 31/10/2022 16:07

Get a water spray, like a plant demister. It's harmless to spray them with a little water and they hate it. One of my cats does this and all I have to do now is stand the water squirter next to me and she stops. Hopefully as he's a kitten he'll soon forget once you can get him to stop for a while.

Lula74 · 31/10/2022 16:08

*mister 😂

Ritascornershop · 31/10/2022 16:12

He’s tiny! Not a cat, a kitten. This is normal kitten behaviour. Poor wee boy. If he’s interfering with work, though, why is he in the office?

SavingsThreads · 31/10/2022 16:12

Spraying cats with water is not cruel ffs.

It's water, not acid!

Maytodecember · 31/10/2022 16:12

He’s play hunting, bless him. Get him some toys.

NeverDropYourMooncup · 31/10/2022 16:17

Just wondering, OP, do you go swimming or use bleach to clean your home at all?

If you do, you smell like the best chew toy, pouncing target, buddy, enemy, adversary and his favourite person in the whole world all at once.

Putting a dangle toy so that it keeps him launching at least 3 foot away could help.

What's the little demon's name?

MarigoldMoonStone · 31/10/2022 16:21

Love him, sounds hilarious (for your colleagues too probably) haha

fatnotfluffy · 31/10/2022 16:35

We have two cats at work but they don't come inside the building so I am very envious of your office kitten. I have one at home a bit older than that little cutie and he is absolutely bats sometimes. We bought a pop-up play tunnel for him and that has kept him entertained for months - far more than any of his other toys
