Why do people talk on their phones through the speaker bit?

Is it just me, or is it really fucking weird and a bit annoying?

I see a lot of people these days shouting through the speaker bit, and hearing the person on the other end shouting back in a tinny, irritating manner.

Why don't they just use the phone in the normal way, ie hold it to your ear?

Because they're cunts.

Davethecat2001 · 28/10/2022 20:28

I concur!

Mine doesn’t work unless it’s on speaker.

But I’d find a quiet corner if I needed to have a conversation.

I do this when I have neck pain but realise I look like someone from an early series of The Apprentice.

B1rd · 28/10/2022 20:29

Yes! Yes this is most certainly irritating! I feel my anger rising every time I see someone do it.

Davethecat2001 · 28/10/2022 20:29

I recall on reality shows like The Apprentice, they would talk to each other through the speaker..why has this become a thing?

I often have my phone on loudspeaker when I’m outside if I’m pushing the buggy and someone calls me. I try not to do it in public spaces or elsewhere as it’s really inconsiderate

DoubleBuggyDriver · 28/10/2022 20:30

I was meant to say public transport, not public spaces!

PrunellaMcTat · 28/10/2022 20:30

I started doing this when an old phone didn't work the normal way. Now it's habit.

woodhill · 28/10/2022 20:30

I find I can't hear it and when it touches my ear, it beeps on the controls

I don't tend to use the phone for calls in public

Violettaa · 28/10/2022 20:30

WHhhhhhy do people do this on the bus!

Im occasionally tempted to join in the conversation.

So the viewer can hear both sides of the conversation?

But I agree op, it's irritating. I was in London recently and it seemed to be a very common thing to do in public.

Davethecat2001 · 28/10/2022 20:31

I can kind of get it if you have your hands full, but if you're walking solo down the street, or on the tube, no one needs to hear your conversation. I notice it's youngish people that seem to do this more.

I have no idea op, but I wish my husband used his phone like that. He has big lugs and having a phone conversation with him is a nightmare. He constantly cuts me off or the phone goes on airplane mode etc

Aaarrrggghhh

I feel really bad saying that but it's great to get it all out. Honestly it drives me fucking nuts.

Mrsjayy · 28/10/2022 20:31

On my last phone I'd sometimes press mute with my face 😂 so I'd speak into the speaker not if I was out though ,

RandomMess · 28/10/2022 20:32

I can't hear as well and also manage to hit mute accidentally a lot when holding the phone up to my ear trying to hear them 🤷🏽‍♀️

PutinIsAWarCriminal · 28/10/2022 20:33

My parents wear hearing aids and they can only hear me if I speak to them hands free.

YellowAndGreenToBeSeen · 28/10/2022 20:34

(barring disabilities)

Young people, really? I suppose it depends what you define as young but I think it's older people! Young people text, rather than speak

elastamum · 28/10/2022 20:36

I am partially deaf and struggle with the phone to my ear.

woodhill · 28/10/2022 20:37

Yes it's not like a land line, the touch screen is very sensitive

Soubriquet · 28/10/2022 20:37

I only do it at home but I do because it’s easier for me with a hearing aid in

I struggle to hear properly on the phone. Taking my hearing aid out and putting it against my ear is not as good as listening to it from the speaker with my hearing aid in

user1471453601 · 28/10/2022 20:38

I do this because I'm very hard of hearing and wear hearing aids. Using the miracle of Bluetooth (it feels like a miracle to me because I have zero understanding of Bluetooth, and absolutely no desire to learn more) my phone sounds directly into my hearing aids. Without this app, I couldn't use my mobile phone as a phone at all.

I could also be a cunt too as a previous poster suggested, however.

FartOutLoudDay · 28/10/2022 20:40

I don’t think OP is talking about people with hearing difficulties. I know exactly the people you mean OP, and it’s mostly young people here too. Walking with their phone held horizontally in front of their face instead of up to their ear. Baffles me!
