A friend of mine died suddenly a few weeks ago. He had separated from his wife last year and had made a will.
He had been invited to a wedding next year. The mother of the bride texted his ex-wife asking that money from his estate be used to buy a gift for the couple.

Everyone who knew and loved him is still reeling from his death. But the important thing for this woman is her daughter still gets a gift from him. How in the name of all that is good and holy would you ask that?
My friend, God love him, was a tight bastard and would have been buying the cheapest thing on the registry; which makes it even worse somehow.

I know this is a kinda funny CF thread, but there are some really sad stories 😢

Boopeedoop · 28/10/2022 20:38

How about his obituary in a lovely silver frame? Well classy.

Sorry for the loss of your friend op 💐

I would have found this hard to believe if something similar hadn't happened to me. I've posted about this on here before.

My husband died at home suddenly and unexpectedly. He was alone. I didn't go to the house that evening because of investigations as it was a sudden death. The next day I drove in to the street and got out of my car. Before I even reached my house the teenage daughter of my neighbour came out of hers and approached me. She said something along the lines of 'Mum sent to ask me if she could have your blinds since you won't need them any more as you won't be coming back here to live now will you?' At least the girl had the decency to look uncomfortable when asking me. I actually felt sorry for her. There are no words for her mum though.

She needs to text back
I’ll ask him what he wants to get you and let you know when he replies

BigglyBee · 28/10/2022 20:48

Bloody hell, @BigglyBee , what on earth made them think your house belonged to their mother? Did your husband intervene?

The farm had originally belonged to FIL, but the house had been condemned, so he gave it all to DH, who built (literally, with his own hands) another one, worked the land and cared for each of his parents when they became ill, as well as fishing in the North Sea, so he was a bit busy for a few years, and he could never be sure that his dad had told his arsehole brothers.

He did intervene when one of them threatened me. I'm not sure exactly what happened because I'd taken the dog out of the way, but when I came back, each brother was sulking in his room and my frying pan had a dent in it! Land does funny things to people and CF-ery of this level is not unusual in farming families in my area.

asking questions is troll hunting?

ok.

Key word is “story”

^ THAT’S troll hunting @Razzle5. As are some of your other posts.

Isn’t there a report button if you’re so bothered?

Appalling their approach but….

he did the event, yes? So anyone who wouldn’t donate when he’d done it was surely… also appalling.

And small charities desperate for funds

and… well, it was correct that the money, whether £800 or £1500 was given to them as it was the charity’s

Fuck no it wasn’t appropriate of the charity. Just because he did the event, the money wasn’t collected. If he had been given £10 then that was all she should have passed on. Not demand money for people, when people sponsor it’s only a promise not a binding contract. This and all your other posts just make you seem delightful.

Cowhen · 28/10/2022 21:44

Sorry for your loss, OP.

The ex should reply simply, 'I'll prepare something.' Then she should screenshot and print the conversation and put that in a cheap, tacky frame.

You don’t say anything. You approach the most gossipy person you know and confide in them. They will do the rest

This is exactly what I would do - and have

Condolences for the loss off your friend, OP Flowers

HerbertChops · 28/10/2022 22:00

Wow, that’s the worst cf I’ve ever heard of. I thought my wedding cf was bad. A friend who I didn’t see often anymore was getting married, I wasn’t invited to the wedding or the reception or any of the celebrations but I was sent the gift registry list to buy the happy couple a present! I ignored all emails about it (she sent it repeatedly, the last time was when she got back from honeymoon when she was ‘chasing up’ the last gifts!!)

Sorry for your loss op 💐

MaggieFS · 28/10/2022 22:16

Ha. I hope you chased up your invitation?!?

I hope everyone gets to hear about this grabby woman and she learns a lesson.

This, perfect.

I can’t actually believe this. Who does this?! I’m totally flabbergasted

some people… brass neck

no words!

Bonkers! Sounds like a storyline from the Archers, when the none farming siblings took umbrage that the sibling actually slaving away to keep the farm going was the one inheriting.

OdkinsBodkins · 28/10/2022 23:19

So unfunny and awful that it's come back round to being funny. If you see what I mean. Cheeeeeeky fu-thingamyjig!

thebellagio · 28/10/2022 18:43

Yes we’ve had experience of this as well.

Did you know if you leave a proportion of your property to charity, the charity has the right until day of exchange to stop the whole property sale if they believe that the property sale value should be higher?

we had issues where the EA deliberately overpriced the value of the property by £75-£100k (claiming developers would want it). When it eventually sold for the expected house value (comparable to neighbours), we had to have a formal letter written by the EA explaining why they had originally overpriced it by so much and why the accepted offer should stand else the charity had the right to stop the sale of the property.

if you leave a set sum (rather than a percentage), they can’t interfere.

Gosh, no I didn’t know that.

Suggest a guest will bring along his ashes so he attends in spirit....
Gift being his presence....

Good idea!

Isthisreasonable · 28/10/2022 23:30

Known a couple of people who had to sort their exh's estates because their joint children were either too young to do it or were young adults and needed their mother to help as it was too confusing/distressing. Very sad.

Tell the MOTB that there is a registry to contribute to the funeral/wake and you need the B&G's email to send the list to them.

thebellagio · 28/10/2022 23:35

@Fireballxl5 it was nuts.

all it showed to me was never to leave a proportion to charity. Always make it a fixed sum. That way they can’t interfere.

the whole thing was so stressful
