What has Keanu Reeves done to offend Matthew Perry?

Apart from existing, that is.

OP posts:

I've a soft spot for Keanu - he really can act and was very good in "My Own Private Idaho" which is a very challenging film 25 years on.

MingoDringo · 30/10/2022 10:14

Pretty mean and spiteful I think. Maybe he's just really jealous of him.

Arnaquer · 30/10/2022 10:17

Agree jealous of KR a who despite his own personal troubles has remained a decent guy. Unlike MP.

badbaduncle · 30/10/2022 10:23

He's a nasty failure of a man, still a multi millionaire, all made of the writers talents as he can't act can he? Pathetic. Laying into Keanu whilst hailing his best friend, River Phoenix, as an "original thinker". Perry funnier than Phoenix? The most gifted actor of his generation? He is an imbecile.

Keanu has suffered a life of tragedy losing his best friend, child and the mother of his child when he was very young. How dare Perry. This has quite rightly made him disliked across the whole of the industry I imagine.

Yes, Google can.

Oh it's one of those "we're having a conversation and if you aren't in the know I won't talk to you" threads. Hint taken. Will go to a thread in the CHAT topic where people actually want to CHAT.
For fucksake.

Notanotherusername4321 · 30/10/2022 10:30

*It could be a joke as everyone says Keanu is immortal.

River, Keanu and Perry were all friends/ in the same social circle back in the day so it could be an inside joke or fued from back then*

this was the impression I got. The use of “Keanu walks among us” , isn’t that a vampire/angel/devil/alien saying?

NeverDropYourMooncup · 30/10/2022 10:38

Suzi888 · 29/10/2022 21:11

Perry continues later on, “River was a beautiful man, inside and out — too beautiful for this world, it turned out. It always seems to be the really talented guys who go down. Why is it that the original thinkers like River Phoenix and Heath Ledger die, but Keanu Reeves still walks among us? River was a better actor than me; I was funnier. But I certainly held my own in our scenes — no small feat, when I look back decades later.

Wait - Matthew Perry was in something other than Friends?

I've learned something new today.

I could, however, list a large number of movies that Keanu Reeves has been in. Almost as though he was more recognisable, distinctive and identifiable as an actor compared to a sitcom cast member.

Clymene · 30/10/2022 10:40

What he said is on the thread @SpookabooAtTheZoo

PuppyMonkey · 30/10/2022 10:45

I think I misunderstood this story at first as I thought it was something he said on live telly in an off the cuff interview or something - maybe a nervous gaff. But he actually wrote it down in a book? HmmShock

I think it’s incredibly mean - it sounds like he’s saying how come the talented ones all died but untalented Keanu still lives?

GyozaGuiting · 30/10/2022 10:45

He has apologised for this, saying he just picked a name. But it’s very thoughtless and unnecessary.
It’s a shame as I’ve been enjoying the extracts from the book in The Times, it’s surprisingly well written, and he’s the first to put himself down in the rest of the book.

badbaduncle · 30/10/2022 13:51

The more I think about this, the more appalling Perry is. Phoenix died of a drug overdose, in front of his brother. He died, almost certainly, because he took a vast amount of drugs in an attempt to block out the childhood trauma of abuse at the hands of the "Children of Lesser God" cult. How dare Perry claim some sort of fatalistic inevitablity to the death of a young man with so much to live for? Too beautiful for this world? Fuck off. I have read 3 books about River Phoenix, his family and friendships and Perry has never been mentioned.

Fraaahnces · 30/10/2022 13:58

Unlike Matthew Perry, he didn’t get flabby and saggy and have to do talk show circuits making lame jokes about the one show that made him famous thirty years ago. Instead, he did a billion movies, never aged and is basically every thinking woman’s dream date. Apart from MP, nobody ever says a bad thing about Keanu.

ImAvingOops · 30/10/2022 13:58

Everyone is sad about RP and HL, but that doesn't make KR any less important or valuable as a human being - apparently KR had done a lot of good in the world and is beautiful so I for one very glad he's still with us. None of us can say how RP would have turned out as an adult - he died too young for us to really know and that's tragic. But to link this to KR is spiteful and uncalled for.
I think a lot less of Matthew Perry than I did before!

heartbroken22 · 30/10/2022 14:01

It was just a joke.

roundtable · 30/10/2022 14:07

It comes across as quite spiteful. Maybe he's auditioned for roles that went to Keanu Reeves that he feels he would have done better?

He probably also knows that he won't come back at him either. There is only one celebrity that I would actually be devastated about of it came out that they were not a nice person and that is Keanu Reeves. He just seems so lovely and what a refreshing change to see a celebrity with an age appropriate partner.

HauntersGonnaHaunt · 30/10/2022 14:34

heartbroken22 · 30/10/2022 14:01

It was just a joke.

That old chestnut. That's what everyone says when they get called out for being unpleasant.

womanofthemoon · 30/10/2022 14:37

It was really weird. I don’t know how it was allowed to be published.

heartbroken22 · 30/10/2022 14:39

@HauntersGonnaHaunt well jokersgonnajoke 😂 you should know..

heartbroken22 · 30/10/2022 14:39

You'd have to understand Matthew perrys humour to get the joke...

QuebecBagnet · 30/10/2022 14:44

Was Matthew Perry actually friends with River Phoenix? Who died in 1993 and Friends didn’t start till 1994 so I don’t think Perry was famous until after River died, though I accept River may have had non famous friends. Just seems a bit unlikely.

also what did Heath and River do to be “original thinkers”. I mean they were better actors than Perry but not sure that makes them original thinkers? Were they secret philosophers?

PuppyMonkey · 30/10/2022 14:45

Yeah the whole sentence talking about the sad death of a close friend - clearly just a big old joke and we don’t get MP’s sense of humour.Confused

QuebecBagnet · 30/10/2022 14:46

Oh sorry, see they were in some movie together

Ingrainedagainstthegrain · 30/10/2022 15:04

He's coming across as a total narcissist.

Remarking repeatedly on how good he looked and how he was the funniest member of the cast, the only one who was brought into the script writing and the one to influence how future generations spoke.

Noting that even when being rushed to the hospital with a burst colon, doctors had been made aware that a VIP guest was coming in. It's of no relevance other than MP would not dream of skipping that part.

Assuming that Cedars Sinai wouldn't have him because he was too important and they couldn't possibly have someone so important die in their building so refused to admit him on that basis.

Spilling the beans that Julia Roberts pursued him and changed the tone of their messages to sexual.

Telling everyone that a named married woman made out with him while her husband was present and unaware.

He's a thoroughly narcissistic, self-absorbed, shallow, ungentlemanly character who will say whatever he wants without a moment's thought for how it affects others.

JustanotherBerkshiremum · 30/10/2022 16:06

⬆️ Gosh, you’re not holding back, are you? 😆

OP posts:
Cocolapew · 30/10/2022 16:19

Didn't he use KR twice in his 'jokes' ?
