If you didn't have to work for money, what would you do?

If money was no object what would you do instead of work? I'll go first- I would love to be a potter and an author (no experience of either but a girl can dream!)

I think lockdown taught many of us that all those plans to write a novel / reskill / take up an arty craft / train for a marathon / start a new business / volunteer for charity if only we had more time are not, in fact, impeded by lack of time.

So, so true.

I have previously had careers in dental nursing and nursery nursing . I gave up part time work when my dad died to be around for my mom who had early stage dementia and looked after her (as well as my DS )as the dementia progressed to the point of her needing to be watched all the time so she is now in a home .
I keep busy looking after the home , walking my dogs and visiting mom. I am thinking of returning to work though as feel I should be using my brain more and don’t want to get dementia .We are comfortable but I don’t have spare cash to be doing lots of courses. I am 53, If money was no object I would love to be living my the sea doing something creative or running a holiday let next to my house .

Toddlerteaplease · 04/11/2022 18:00

The job I currently do. Paediatric nurse. Love it.

theDudesmummy · 04/11/2022 18:02

I'd do something close to what I do now, but do it for charitable and humanitarian organisations pro bono.

DublinDoris2000 · 04/11/2022 18:04

Renovate beautiful and rundown old buildings in Central Dublin and donate them to worthy causes. (Womens shelters, housing for teachers etc.) I'm a structural engineer so used to doing these sorts of projects for the wealthy.

Yamadori · 04/11/2022 18:04

I'd probably spend quite a lot of time propagating trees, and assuming money was no object, I would also buy up any old houses with massive gardens round here to stop property developers getting their grubby hands on the land and destroying a lovely old house and an irreplaceable mature garden.

Heatherbell1978 · 04/11/2022 18:12

I'd love to work a few hours a day at a nice wee coffee shop. I did a lot of this kind of work at Uni and actually really enjoyed it! I loved chatting to people and it kept me fit!

runninglikewater · 04/11/2022 18:20

I'd do loads of crafting, hanging out with friends, get another dog.

Lots of fannying around and pleasing myself tbh.

I might consider fostering but not long term, probably little ones short term.

Isseywith3witchycats · 04/11/2022 18:25

i would run an animal sanctuary probably a feral cat one as ferals are so much harder to rehome than cats who can live in homes , they would have acres of grounds to roam, food every day and all neutered so no out of control breeding, vet care and would run an education program to encourage neutering programs to enable people to keep feral colonies under control

RoseandVioletCreams · 04/11/2022 18:32

I must say I absolutely adore my job!
It's so incredibly varied and interesting I think I would still do it even if I won the lottery.

howdoyougethingsdone · 04/11/2022 18:36

Travel, eat out all the time and sleep!

(And do some work for a charity I'm involved in)!

howdoyougethingsdone · 04/11/2022 18:37

I'd like to learn some new skills such as pottery or silversmithing.

CaronPoivre · 04/11/2022 18:38

I don’t ‘need’ to work for money but I enjoy my job, work with good people and like earning my own income.

MummyInTheNecropolis · 04/11/2022 18:39

I’m a teacher, if money were no object I would volunteer in my school 2.5 days a week, running interventions and helping with general admin. I’d use my spare time to go to the gym regularly, spend more time with my little niece and nephew, and I’d spend the school holidays travelling.

Titsflyingsouth · 04/11/2022 18:40

Are we talking a multi-billionaire or just enough to live off comfortably?

If the former, I'd like to spend my money trying to hold unscrupulous people to account - companies that dump waste in the sea, slum landlords who let people live in unsanitary properties etc - I'd like to fight on behalf of the little guy.

If we're just talking enough cash to retire and be comfortable, I'd like to travel more. There's lots of places on my bucket list that I haven't been to yet - Italy, Norway/Sweden, Canada, New Zealand. And then I'd like to craft, read lots of good books and have long leisurely lunches with my friends. Smile

SuperGinger · 04/11/2022 18:41

Upholstery

Kez200 · 04/11/2022 18:47

I'm part retiring in 2023 and would like to help people who can't afford a tutor to read or do maths. I know teaching isn't that easy plus there is the dbs stuff, so hopefully there are charities out there that support people to do this that I can join.

ByeByeMr · 04/11/2022 19:12

I don't need the money but I work as a dinner lady and sometimes as a TA and like making a difference.

RhubarbFairy · 04/11/2022 19:17

Go part-time in my current job as I love what I DO (work in SEN).

Travel abroad every school holidays.

Keep horses and set up an equestrian centre for horse therapy etc for children with SEN.

Ride on my days off (I'd have staff in the centre to allow for my gallivanting).

Oncemoreforluck · 04/11/2022 19:19

I’d volunteer at the local(ish) horse sanctuary.
I had planned to take early retirement this year to do this, but you know, cost of living etc, etc, etc.

This. We could happily live without my income but I work full time. Work isn't about the money for me really.

Olivetreebutter · 04/11/2022 19:26

Travel!
Everywhere, whenever I could.

EternalStench · 04/11/2022 19:28

I would just travel too. And rattle around in my spacious house keeping fit, reading and meeting friends.

NetballHoop · 04/11/2022 19:31

I'd like to make lovely things from wood.

I'd start with a huge fallen limb from an ancient tree and bring its beauty back to life. I don't think I would ever be able to sell anything I made. I would give it away (apart from the best bits that I'd keep).

ShesThunderstorms · 04/11/2022 19:40

Honestly work wise, I wouldn't do a thing. I'd make sure all the boring house stuff was done day to day by employing a cleaner and a chef.
I'd be too busy doing up the big old house I'd like to buy or having PT sessions every day. Or taking friends and family out for lunch and pottering around shops or garden centres. Or travelling the world.
I could certainly fill my days very easily if I didn't have to work but had all the money to do fun stuff.
