What’s an unacceptable item to buy second hand?

I save a lot of money buy buying most of my clothes on eBay, and I also sell on there too, it means I can afford to wear expensive brands too. Haven’t tried Vinted although I might consider it. I love antique shops, and would buy certain items of furniture if my partner would let me, he only likes new furniture, he also won’t wear used clothing.

I have actually bought second hand bra’s from eBay (in perfect condition and brands I like). I wouldn’t buy second hand knickers though. Although I have bought a second hand bikini on eBay (worn once and in perfect condition). I just washed the bikini with detol laundry cleanser. And to be fair it was sent looking brand new and clean.

I would never buy a second hand mattress or sofa… any soft furnishings really. This seems a bit unhygienic (I think because I can’t sanitise it) and it’s the thought of not knowing what’s happened on the sofa before with its previous owners 🤢.

What would you not consider buying second hand? And what have you previously bought second hand which other people might disapprove of?

It’s personal, but for me no:

  • sofa/mattress etc as can’t be cleaned
  • pants
  • safety items eg car seat, cycling helmets etc as you don’t know if they’ve been damaged

Most of my clothes are second hand. I always wonder if people who turn their nose up at a second hand jumper have ever slept in hotels, or used the towels provided at gyms etc …..

Whistlesandbell · 24/10/2022 17:58

I wouldn’t buy a second hand car seat, mattress, kitchen stuff or towels.
I think I’d only buy clothes.

OneRingToRuleThemAll · 24/10/2022 17:58

I wouldn't buy second hand shoes because they mould to the wearer's feet.

Soft furnishings. Bed bugs 😳

WinneyWasherWoman · 24/10/2022 18:00

I only buy second hand shoes if hardly worn

otherusername · 24/10/2022 18:00

Dildo

ComtesseDeSpair · 24/10/2022 18:01

Just soft furnishings, for the same reason that they’re difficult to clean. Well-worn shoes, no, but those which have clearly only been worn once or twice, fine. Anything else, I’m fine with second hand. I probably wouldn’t go out of my way to buy secondhand underwear, but I’ve worn friends’ underwear and they mine without worrying it’s somehow permanently contaminated despite being thoroughly machine washed.

Underwear/socks

a mattress

thats about it-our house is kitted out purely from charity shops-from our bed frame to our sofas

99% of my clothes are eBay or charity shop-I do wash everything first-we borrowed a friends carpet/furniture cleaner for our sofa and rug

FourChimneys · 24/10/2022 18:03

Underwear, socks, soft furniture.

DelphiniumBlue · 24/10/2022 18:03

I'd have said pants, but when a bag I'd intended to go to the dump got sent with the car boot sale bags, the pants sold more quickly than anything else!

You sold your old pants at a car boot? 😮😂

Wouldn’t buy used underwear but other than that depends on the quality and condition, and whether the saving is worth it. If it can be properly cleaned and it’s a bargain, I’m having it!

I sell loads of stuff on eBay and make sure it’s clean and accurately described.

Sex toys

PuttingDownRoots · 24/10/2022 18:05

Safety equipment.
A toilet brush (prompted by a post a few weeks ago by someone wanting to donate theirs to a charity shop...)

Re pants... its not something I'd buy... but people do buy and sell reusable nappies.

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 24/10/2022 18:06

Definitely bras and knickers, tights
Swimming Costumes
Mattress definitely
Towels
Anything where there is a "where's it been?" Concern

I do try and buy used, but the charity shops by me aren't anything special

I have sold reusable period pads on eBay before, used once and didn’t get on with them, they were washed (no stains). Whoever bought them got a really good deal, as they were very expensive bought new, I sold them as a bundle for under £10.

I’ve bought shoes on eBay and they’ve been fine. You can tell from photos whether they’ve been worn to death or only had a couple of outings.

I do draw the line at toe marks a la Birkenstock, though. Yuck.

IglesiasPiggl · 24/10/2022 18:07

I wouldn't buy second hand shoes, I just think of stinky feet and fungal infections!

AnApparitionQuipped · 24/10/2022 18:08

I wouldn't buy underwear or hosiery.

I'm wary of electrical items from private sellers, as they may have a fault and be a fire risk - I'd buy second hand through an established company.

I wouldn't buy a second hand phone privately because they're a very high fraud item, but I'd buy from, e.g. Music Magpie, CEX etc. Similar for gaming consoles not that I use them, but in the imaginary situation I was buying one as a gift for someone.

I always worry about shoes I have bought new, I wonder how many people have tried them on in the shop, and if there are vurrucas in the shoes lol

Dildo

I think you could probably sanitise a non-battery powered dildo quite easily, but the thought of it being up someone else's orifice is kind of off-putting.

There's barely anything I wouldn't buy second hand, we actually did get our first car seat off FB marketplace but I wouldn't do it again. (Son was fine btw.) Car seat and crib mattress will be new this time.

I got some unworn expensive period pads off a FB group! Total bargain! Still washed the hell out of them though haha

It would probably depend on the material of the dildo, if it’s porous you might struggle to actually get it clean… Personally this is one item I would want to buy new! 🤢

I don’t think places like eBay would allow anyone to sell a used one, although can’t say I have searched for one on there 🤔
