What’s an unacceptable item to buy second hand?

I save a lot of money buy buying most of my clothes on eBay, and I also sell on there too, it means I can afford to wear expensive brands too. Haven’t tried Vinted although I might consider it. I love antique shops, and would buy certain items of furniture if my partner would let me, he only likes new furniture, he also won’t wear used clothing.

I have actually bought second hand bra’s from eBay (in perfect condition and brands I like). I wouldn’t buy second hand knickers though. Although I have bought a second hand bikini on eBay (worn once and in perfect condition). I just washed the bikini with detol laundry cleanser. And to be fair it was sent looking brand new and clean.

I would never buy a second hand mattress or sofa… any soft furnishings really. This seems a bit unhygienic (I think because I can’t sanitise it) and it’s the thought of not knowing what’s happened on the sofa before with its previous owners 🤢.

What would you not consider buying second hand? And what have you previously bought second hand which other people might disapprove of?

I bought a second hand sofa for my old flat. It was in perfect condition though, had washable covers, and looked like it had never been sat on, never mind ahem anything else! And I couldn’t have afforded a new one.

I wouldn’t buy a used mattress though and I tend not to buy shoes second hand. I look at them on Ebay, because I love nice brands that are well out of my price range, but the slightest sign of wear puts me right off.

I’d never even thought of second hand bras - I might go and list all my nice ones I’ve never worn/worn once and now don’t fit me!

I've never bought a brand new sofa
Current solid oak coffee table was £20 from a charity shop
I bought new car seat and buggy

My bed frame second hand but new mattress
Except pants, I buy all my clothing used from eBay/ Vinted., just throw in the wash before wearing

@Dontfuckingsaycheese and @Ladyofthepeonies I can tell you those bowls (we had them when I was young) saw a lot of Angel Delight and pink blancmange back in the day Grin

Supersimkin2 · 24/10/2022 23:09

Anything you can’t disinfect or wash at 60, moth proof or cockroach/bed bug proof.

Long term charity shop vol here. You can machine wash pretty much anything wearable including winter coats and trainers. Duvets often cheaper new.

I wouldn’t buy old cushions, mattresses or big electricals cos of bugs. Or bed frames.

Our sofas and mattresses are secondhand. I don't have the luxury of being bothered about what may or may not have happened on them before 🙄

I was just thinking that ... dildo, toothbrush, anything else that was going into an orifice........Oh yeah, husband..........so how would you go about sanitising a penis.? Steam cleaner?

I suppose this means I have to get my steam cleaner out then, another chore to add to the list … sighs

I don't buy a lot second hand apart from brown furniture, but I do give stuff away, and I've wondered if the used school uniform place would take kids' socks and underwear that are still in good condition. If you wouldn't accept those no matter how keen you were to get decent uniform, it's probably best I just chuck it in the rag bag?

Same with DS's bunk beds, I'm going to be changing them for a regular bed and will give this to the BHF or another charity that takes second hand furniture. But do I leave the mattresses with them? They're perfectly clean, he's never wet the bed or been sick on them and they've always had covers on anyway... but if the majority of people wouldn't use them because they were used, even if they look clean, should I just dump them? Seems a shame...

I don't think I would buy knickers or shoes second hand, unless they were still in the packaging. I have bought bras (BNWT) on eBay, I couldn't find them in M&S any more so was delighted to find them.

I asked DSs’ school and they were delighted to have them…children having an accident needing a clean pair of pants and they never come back. Socks too for when the step in a playground puddle.

Rosalindisafuckingnightmare · 24/10/2022 23:30

Underwear - it’s a funny one. Absolutely snapped up the option of second hand pants for potty training children. Just wanted a large cheap supply. And agree period pants that haven’t suited their original owner and are heavily discounted seems like a sensible purchase. Likewise pants worn for a small amount of time in pregnancy would seem to make sense. But I’m not routinely searching for second hand knickers although those two examples could have really seen some bodily fluids! Have borrowed and leant pants to friends, no issue. And am part of a buying and selling site where you need to have professional registration to be a member. No particular reason why people with the same job would be cleaner than anyone else but oddly find this reassuring and would be more likely to buy there than e.g. eBay or FB marketplace. It’s not logical at all!

Pyjamas 🤮🤮

I actually just bought some second hand pyjamas from eBay 😂 … Okay don’t judge me, they were in very good condition and barely worn. I got some next ones and a Victoria secret set, both under £10. Bargain😁

I bought a used breast pump on eBay. There’s not much I wouldn’t buy second hand. I’d draw the line at anything that’s been in someone else’s mouth or vagina though.

Dildo

To be fair, a dildo is a prosthetic penis. To be used in place of penis. If you've ever had sex with a bloke, the chances are that his actual penis is pre-loved and therefore 2nd (or more) hand, used by someone veggies you, so it's not really that different, if you think about it...

To be fair though I think a second hand dildo would be hard to find… Like I have never seen one in a charity shop 🤔😂

I'd have said pants, but when a bag I'd intended to go to the dump got sent with the car boot sale bags, the pants sold more quickly than anything else!

To whom... there is a market in used pants but mainly to pervy men!

Didn't Kerry Katona get her vagina steamed recently? It's a thing...

Realityloom · 25/10/2022 06:14

Shoes I have sold lots of DS things. But the way you walk and imprint a shoe I would never buy second hand shoes. No to the bikini you don't know what that person may have same for knickers also. Bras not so bad but still wouldn't tbh

Just looked this up on eBay… What on earth is this contraption?? 😮 … It looks like some kind of balloon you put in to stretch your foof … 🫣… Good God is that even a thing, it looks painful 😱

And yes I totally wouldn’t want to buy that after someone has used it lol

It is a balloon to stretch you! It is a thing and is getting popular. Apparently it is better than perennial massage for reducing tearing.

Not something I would want from eBay!

Also just thought I wouldn’t ever buy second hand socks … seems unsanitary and they are cheap enough to buy new lol 🧦

Mattress, bedding, towels, underwear, make up.

Chloefairydust · 25/10/2022 16:20

Oh yeah definitely make up, I have a friend who tries on the lipstick samples in stores on her lips! 🤢

Thanks @@DelurkingAJ Socks isn't something I would consider buying used for myself, even if they're washed, but I hadn't thought of schools having a supply of spare socks or underwear for kids who'd got theirs wet. I wish I'd thought of that before when DS was at infants. We'd had the joy of needing the spare pants but I'd washed and returned them, hadn't considered that they wouldn't go back to school for the spares bag!

Plus round our way unfortunately there's an area considered the worst in Europe for child poverty, so maybe there will still be a "market" for children's items like that. It might be worth offering them to the used uniform place, in a separate bag, for them to offer out discreetly (or to dispose of if they won't).

I'll offer the mattresses when the time comes to change beds but won't be surprised if they're turned down. Shame though, there's nothing wrong with them and they're clean and bug-free.

MajesticElephant · 25/10/2022 16:26

I love a second hand bargain but there is a quite long list of things I won’t buy - mainly due to fear of fungal infections. Underwear, socks, sheets, pjs, towels (including washcloths), makeup, shoes, any personal care items or toiletries, mattresses.

containsnuts · 25/10/2022 16:38

I bought DCs second hand bath toys from a charity shop but I wouldn't do that now I know how mouldy they can get on the inside.
