What’s an unacceptable item to buy second hand?

I save a lot of money buy buying most of my clothes on eBay, and I also sell on there too, it means I can afford to wear expensive brands too. Haven’t tried Vinted although I might consider it. I love antique shops, and would buy certain items of furniture if my partner would let me, he only likes new furniture, he also won’t wear used clothing.

I have actually bought second hand bra’s from eBay (in perfect condition and brands I like). I wouldn’t buy second hand knickers though. Although I have bought a second hand bikini on eBay (worn once and in perfect condition). I just washed the bikini with detol laundry cleanser. And to be fair it was sent looking brand new and clean.

I would never buy a second hand mattress or sofa… any soft furnishings really. This seems a bit unhygienic (I think because I can’t sanitise it) and it’s the thought of not knowing what’s happened on the sofa before with its previous owners 🤢.

What would you not consider buying second hand? And what have you previously bought second hand which other people might disapprove of?

Of course, it's your choice, but do you never sit on a sofa or fabric covered chair in any public place?

I’m not a fan of sitting on well-used looking fabric sofas in pubs and I don’t much like walking barefoot on hotel carpets, to be honest.

But generally, upholstered chairs in public places are usually used decorously by clothed people. I’ve had sex on my sofa. I’ve seen people sit on their sofas with bare arses. I’ve seen people change their babies nappies on their sofa. I wouldn’t particularly want a sofa in my house that strangers had had sex on or rubbed their arseholes on or changed their baby’s nappies on.

I was just about to say this …

How many people have sex on their sofas? (And all the fluids that involves🤢). Whereas one would hope people aren’t having sex on public soft furnishings, like in restaurants and pubs 😁

I don't buy a lot second hand apart from brown furniture, but I do give stuff away, and I've wondered if the used school uniform place would take kids' socks and underwear that are still in good condition. If you wouldn't accept those no matter how keen you were to get decent uniform, it's probably best I just chuck it in the rag bag?

Same with DS's bunk beds, I'm going to be changing them for a regular bed and will give this to the BHF or another charity that takes second hand furniture. But do I leave the mattresses with them? They're perfectly clean, he's never wet the bed or been sick on them and they've always had covers on anyway... but if the majority of people wouldn't use them because they were used, even if they look clean, should I just dump them? Seems a shame...

I don't think I would buy knickers or shoes second hand, unless they were still in the packaging. I have bought bras (BNWT) on eBay, I couldn't find them in M&S any more so was delighted to find them.

I’d never buy a second hand car seat. That said, I’ve sold two because I could put my hand on my heart and say nothing untoward had happened to them. They had been well looked after and never been in an accident. I’d have kept them for another child but I’ve only had 1.

EvilRingahBitch · 24/10/2022 20:13

I've also sold a car seat, to a friend. They knew I wouldn't lie about it being in an accident, and actually they'd probably have heard about it if I'd had one.

lannistunut · 24/10/2022 20:20

Wouldn't buy a second hand mattress, but not bothered by second hand sofas if they look/smell clean. I have lived in rented accommodation etc. in my time and I am happy to sleep in hotels/holiday rentals.

I wouldn't buy swimwear, underwear, socks or shoes second hand. Hairbrushes/hair accessories/earrings all no. Not keen on second hand handbags either.

Safety items - bike helmets and car seats are definitely a no.

It would probably depend on the material of the dildo, if it’s porous you might struggle to actually get it clean… Personally this is one item I would want to buy new! 🤢

I don’t think places like eBay would allow anyone to sell a used one, although can’t say I have searched for one on there 🤔

?????????What??????? A dildo that's porous? What kind of person would ever even think that's ok?

LibertyLily · 24/10/2022 20:38

No to underwear, socks, shoes unless obviously nearly new, toothbrush, hairbrush, safety items, pillows, duvet, bedding, toilet brush.

I was going to add mattress - but we once bought an antique brass bed on ebay and the seller included the mattress when our courier collected it. The bed was from a spare room so rarely used and the mattress appeared like new. Actually we still have the mattress although the bed is long gone.

We've also bought several second hand sofas (all decent brands at greatly reduced prices) on ebay, but I always ensure I ask lots of questions concerning the condition before committing to buy. Several of our cushions were purchased used too - I've a lovely Timorous Beasties one that was less than half price for example.

We currently have a second hand Sottini roll top bath and once purchased a second hand, vintage high level toilet, although it was immaculately clean!

Yeah the flexible, soft plastic, jelly, type material dildos are slightly porous meaning once they have been used you can never get them completely sanitary again.

To be fair though even if it was made of a material that could be cleaned, I don’t think I would fancy the idea of it… Think I will just buy my toys new lol

I'd have said pants, but when a bag I'd intended to go to the dump got sent with the car boot sale bags, the pants sold more quickly than anything else!

Wow. I couldn't even give free DVDs away at the last carboot, yet people bought your second hand undergarments!

Chloefairydust · 24/10/2022 22:16

I once sold a bundle of knickers (unworn) that came as sets with bras. They were too big for me and had been cluttering my underwear draw for a few years, so I had a clear out and listed them for just a few pounds on eBay, half expecting them not to sell at all. Only to have this woman buy them, I checked her feedback on eBay and it appears she sold knickers on there after wearing them 😮…

Sure enough after I sent her mine that she bought, she soon had them listed up individually, she made loads of profit on what she had bought them for…. I was just left thinking now why didn’t I think of that? 😂

I’ll just share my latest pre-loved finds here. Purchased with pure joy today. For the total of £3.25 - matching but found by chance in two different charity shops today ❤️❤️❤️ I’m doing Christmas for the first time ever this year and the menu includes the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee trifle first created for the family a month ago and requested again 🙂 I planned to scour the local charity shops and there they were sitting there on a brief pop by today. Aren’t they just beautiful? They were a bit dull and dusty. Now they sparkle and I can’t wait to use them. I like to imagine what festive tables they have graced in the past and now they have an exciting new life with me. What’s not to love?

I love buying second hand clothes. But I also love buying kitchenware with a past. I wonder what that past was. Ps I do know one of the small bowls doesn’t match. But that’s ok too. It does now. It’s part of a new set. A new family 🙂

Ooh that’s a beautiful trifle bowl set, it’s going to look stunning on the dining table Christmas Day 🙂… I love when you find that perfect item for an amazing price. I bet they would have cost a fortune new.

@Kindofcrunchy what the difference between a dildo being used by someone else and a man? 😂 unless you guys all want virgins with unused penises. I'm only joking btw.

Dontfuckingsaycheese · 24/10/2022 22:43

@Ladyofthepeonies I am ridiculously happy about them! I love that I am grown up (52) enough to want them and that I finally have a kitchen with space to store more occasional items! Good luck with your scouring xx

Dontfuckingsaycheese · 24/10/2022 22:44

Thank you @Chloefairydust ❤️

I am pregnant and was googling aniball (a birth trainer to stretch pre birth) after a friend recommended it. I saw some used ones for sale on eBay. Who buys something so intimate second hand?!

Aww I wish I had space in my kitchen for beautiful glassware like this … I’m in a new build and they make the kitchens so small with no storage 🙃

I wouldn't buy second hand shoes because they mould to the wearer's feet.

See I swear this is nonsense put about by shoe companies. If shoes mould to foot shape then they can remould to a new foot. It's not like they mould once and turn to concrete!

gogohmm · 24/10/2022 22:48

Anything that's safety gear unless from a friend, mattress unless known source, underwear

Just looked this up on eBay… What on earth is this contraption?? 😮 … It looks like some kind of balloon you put in to stretch your foof … 🫣… Good God is that even a thing, it looks painful 😱

And yes I totally wouldn’t want to buy that after someone has used it lol

I've sold old beds, could have sold many times over, people are not fussy. Ditto sofas, got a good price too

gogohmm · 24/10/2022 22:54

In fact the only thing I've refused was a second hand motorbike jacket because despite being very good condition it had been in a garage unused for years and the materials can degrade

I was just thinking that ... dildo, toothbrush, anything else that was going into an orifice........Oh yeah, husband..........so how would you go about sanitising a penis.? Steam cleaner?
