What’s an unacceptable item to buy second hand?

I save a lot of money buy buying most of my clothes on eBay, and I also sell on there too, it means I can afford to wear expensive brands too. Haven’t tried Vinted although I might consider it. I love antique shops, and would buy certain items of furniture if my partner would let me, he only likes new furniture, he also won’t wear used clothing.

I have actually bought second hand bra’s from eBay (in perfect condition and brands I like). I wouldn’t buy second hand knickers though. Although I have bought a second hand bikini on eBay (worn once and in perfect condition). I just washed the bikini with detol laundry cleanser. And to be fair it was sent looking brand new and clean.

I would never buy a second hand mattress or sofa… any soft furnishings really. This seems a bit unhygienic (I think because I can’t sanitise it) and it’s the thought of not knowing what’s happened on the sofa before with its previous owners 🤢.

What would you not consider buying second hand? And what have you previously bought second hand which other people might disapprove of?

I love a second hand bargain but there is a quite long list of things I won’t buy - mainly due to fear of fungal infections. Underwear, socks, sheets, pjs, towels (including washcloths), makeup, shoes, any personal care items or toiletries, mattresses.

To be fair I don’t think I would buy second hand towels, or bed sheets… Although when you stay at a hotel your using towels and bedding that’s been used by God knows how many people 🤔

I also have second hand sheets! They’re the only ones I use! I have never seen any as beautiful as them new.

They’re these - Brentford Nylons. I ❤️ them!

I was just thinking that ... dildo, toothbrush, anything else that was going into an orifice........Oh yeah, husband..........so how would you go about sanitising a penis.? Steam cleaner?

In a beaker.

Rubyupbeat · 25/10/2022 19:46

I understand people saying they wouldn't buy undies or tights secondhand, but would they still buy jeans, shorts or trousers secondhand? as they are very up close and personal with a womans private parts and the thought of wearing sh items like that turn my stomach.

To be fair though I think a second hand dildo would be hard to find… Like I have never seen one in a charity shop 🤔😂

Love honey take returns. 100% refund if you're not satisfied. They must do something with them...

There are also sites where you can buy and sell used sex toys. There must be a market for them...

Toilet seat
Deodorant
Swimwear
Underwear
Ladies things.....its just wrong
Shoes
Hairbrush
Verucca socks

Chloefairydust · 25/10/2022 20:22

It wouldn’t even occur to me to buy a second hand toilet seat 🤣 … Definitely wouldn’t buy one though lol

and yes a second hand hairbrush would creep me out … I hate when the hairdressers use brush/ combs on me, although it’s a necessary evil I hadn’t help looking at other peoples hairs in the brush 🤢

I wouldn't buy a second hand toilet seat, but I use second hand toilet seats very regularly, which is weird really.

lljkk · 25/10/2022 20:50

I have a feeling I wouldn't turn my nose up at any of these if I wanted the item badly enough.

AffIt · 25/10/2022 21:03

Pants.

Mattresses.

Weirdly, socks are fine to may people - I do a lot of walking / outdoorsy stuff and realised that I had WAY more socks than I had a need for, and they were snapped up (were good wool / technical fabric socks, though, rather than bog-standard cotton).

Anything you can’t disinfect or wash at 60, moth proof or cockroach/bed bug proof.

Long term charity shop vol here. You can machine wash pretty much anything wearable including winter coats and trainers. Duvets often cheaper new.

I wouldn’t buy old cushions, mattresses or big electricals cos of bugs. Or bed frames.

Bed frames? You are having a laugh. Just spray and leave. Soft furnishings agree.

The only thing that would concern me with a bed frame would be bed bugs … Maybe if I could inspect it in person first … I’m not sure, would you be able to see signs of bugs on furniture like a bed frame? 🤔

I asked DSs’ school and they were delighted to have them…children having an accident needing a clean pair of pants and they never come back. Socks too for when the step in a playground puddle.

What? Not sure how I'd feel if DCs came home from school wearing second hand pants (DCs have spares in the bag so hopefully that won't happen). Other items I wouldn't worry about.

I didn’t realise this happened in schools either. I think I have a vague memory from my early school days of a child having to wear their PE kit after an accident ,although this was in the 90’s so things have probably changed since then lol.

The last majority of parents don't send spare pants to school with their children, especially as they get older and more able to use the loo reliably but of course accidents happen. I was in a year 6 class last week and a child didn't make it to the toilet in time so had to get changed.

I wouldn’t blink. Used to happen all the time at nursery (even though the boys did have their own clothing there) and if I had a daughter in a skirt I think I’d rather she had knickers than none (DS1 got sent home commando once as he went full length in a puddle long after accidents were a problem..fine if you’re in spare trousers (as he was)). The Head said most parents don’t send spare pants, even in Reception.

Were they not new pants though? I know a teacher that keeps a pack of pants in a cupboard but they're brand new and still in the packaging.

Cantthinkofanewnameatm · 26/10/2022 10:50

Knickers
pyjamas.
Wouldnt like used pillows/duvet or mattress so mine will have to last a long time.

Schools have a special cupboard for spare clothes, including undies, that are usually a mix of old, unclaimed lost items and things that have been donated.

In some schools they have a stash of girls' pants for if they suddenly come on a period and need a change.

I am a supply teacher, btw, so have worked in loads of primary schools.

Smoem · 26/10/2022 15:18

All of the already mentioned obvious. And I wouldn’t buy a second hand electronic breast pump. Although I did sell mine when I was done with it. 😅

Unfortunately that costs money. But clean second hand pants don’t. I’m sure some schools do but when teachers are buying their own resources I’d rather they have a 4 year old who’d wet themselves a pair of clean and dry pants…just like I did when a child had an accident on a play date and Mum hadn’t brought a spare pair!
