And will this finally rid of us Jacob Rees Mogg and his ilk?

Where’s Javid. I thought he was ok

Possibly earmarked for something in the next reshuffle?

This is undoubtedly a Cabinet "of all the talents" - a sharp contrast with Liz Truss's cabinet "of all her mates". Rishi Sunak has re-appointed good performers and handed out prize jobs to MPs who backed his leadership rivals. This is all about unity - and grown-up politics.

So Steve Barclay back as health secretary. An interesting move by Sunak. Barclay set out a reform agenda to tackle the bloated ALBs, regulators and DHSC in August. 53k people at that level who he said distracted the frontline and impacted its delivery.

Coffey in the environment. If her record with health is anything to go by she'll probably be advocating burying toxic waste in the green belt..

Congratulations AT Gillian Keegan on your appointment as the Education Secretary.

As Skills Minister, you were passionate about skills & apprenticeships - this is a really good appointment for AT educationgovuk

I also think it’s a good cabinet with the exception of Braverman, that’s going to be a stick sunak is beaten with.

I was thinking about penny, whichever way you cut it, she didn’t have the 100, could have been 90 could have been 30 but she knew full well she couldn’t hit 100 and she kept it to the last possible moment, literally, before conceding.

She could have ended this whole thing much sooner when she saw how much support sunak had in the party and she didn’t. she could have attempted unity.

But she was bloody minded about it, and kept the country in turmoil. I think she’s lucky to get leader of the house. She simply can’t expect Rishi is going to reward her for being a bit cunty about it. She was defo putting herself first and didn’t care about the party or country, because if she did, when she knew it was impossible, she should have conceded and gone for unity.

she’s no right to be pissed. She got more than she deserves.

Well, I don't know what is going to happen to James Cleverly but the Foreign Secretary is using reshuffle day to make some headway through his call sheet, speaking to counterparts from India, UAE, Singapore & Ukraine.

Gove as Levelling Up is an interesting one for Liverpool Council - a controversial figure of course but there’s a sense that he took more interest in the council’s situation than others have done in the position since the intervention began

Wtf? Have you got a source for that, @RedToothBrush - I'd love to follow it up with a couple of Tory people.

Who will Rishi Sunak have on his cabinet?

Badenoch staying at international dev

Interesting that Badenoch has gained equalities, which was previously in Zahawi's brief at the Cabinet Office

I prefer Sunak’s version of showing a spread across the party so agree with top quote. Although I’m worried about Javid sitting at home 😂 the rest are good choices.

I get the worry / annoyance at Braverman but I reckon if you’re typically a Labour voter that’s the reason it’ll rankle - it’s for the Brexit / red wall voters which he needs if he wants a chance.

I hope education drops the view expressed here as times have changed.

Badenoch has got women and equalities yes!

BigUpAllOfUshereOnMN · 25/10/2022 18:34

How is Suella Braverman able to come back? Wasn't breaching the Ministerial code an offence? I’m starting to think it was some kind of strategy.

noblegiraffe · 25/10/2022 18:36

Gavin Williamson was sacked for leaking state secrets and was allowed back into cabinet as Ed Sec and then knighted!

AutumnCrow · 25/10/2022 18:37

Strategic breaches of the ministerial code are now a separate module in the MI6 James Bond classes.

Croque · 25/10/2022 18:38

She never broke the code unknowingly, it was part of a hissy fit. Now that the tantrum is over, Rishi is allowing her off the naughty step but he will be keeping a close eye on her behaviour.

Not what Tim Shipman is reporting:

Tim Shipman at shippersunbound
Suella Braverman did not mistakenly leak a meaningless document. She endlessly consulted a maverick. She deliberately emailed a policy doc not yet agreed to her pvt email. Then she sent it to John Hayes and someone she thought was his wife. Then lied to PM about when it was sent

The last quote is also significant. Security sources regarded her as loose lipped even before the events of last week. Let’s see what now emerges from the woodwork

Unappetising as the Braverman reappointment is to many that, combined with keeping Mordaunt where she is, suggests Sunak has picked up some of the power politics that some feared he lacked earlier this year

I've thought it was a strategy all along! You don't just send an email like that. It all seemed a bit convenient somehow.

PurplePansy05 · 25/10/2022 18:54

It's an awful cabinet! If these are the finest Conservatives, give me Labour now!

PurplePansy05 · 25/10/2022 18:55

And yes obviously Braverman staged her own exit...probably wanted to run for PM again but is too deluded to see she's the only one believing in her own hype.

SwedishEdith · 25/10/2022 18:56

Maybe Sunak knows there is worse to come from Braverman so he can sack her again and kill her attempts to still be leader. She's so appalling I'm clinging to the idea it can only be a cynical appointment.

LaGioconda · 25/10/2022 19:08

FFS, fifth Education secretary in four months. It's basically a dumping-ground for the Tories, isn't it?

The Raab appointment is a bit nutty, apart from anything else he's bound to lose his seat at the next election.

toomuchlaundry · 25/10/2022 19:10

@LaGioconda maybe this one will be better than the others!
