My son has worked with Meryl Streep after she’d filmed Mamma Mia and can confirm she was absolutely lovely. Unlike her co star….

xPeaceX · 30/10/2022 21:10

Who, tell me Pierce Brosnan was not horrible??

Knittingnanny2 · 30/10/2022 21:24

Apparently so

Roxy69 · 31/10/2022 08:50

'I think she sat next to Robert Carlisle on a flight once and chatted away to him for a while. Apparently he was a really lovely person.'
I'm so pleased.

Bruce Forsyth has always made my skin crawl.

You do know he is dead??

You do know he is dead??

I presume PP was referring to his TV programmes - many of which are still regularly shown - rather than having been a regular acquaintance of his when he was alive?

You do know that means he'll never read Mumsnet again?

What difference does that make?

ChangedmynameagainforChristmas · 31/10/2022 12:18

Do you think once someone dies we should only say nice things about them, even if it means lying?

In the immediate aftermath of the death, unless it is someone truly heinous like Peter Sutcliffe, then yes it means exactly that. Lying by omission, rather than inventing good stuff.

After an interval, then of course you can say what you want - you cannot libel the dead. But as the dead cannot respond, it's still better to avoid extreme/controversial versions of events

antelopevalley · 31/10/2022 15:15

Totally disagree. I can not stand lying about the dead. Racist and mean Uncle Jeff becomes painted as the life and soul of the party. Fuck that.

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 31/10/2022 15:38

Firstly, Bruce died several years ago, so it's not like anybody is protesting outside his funeral now.

Secondly, nobody is saying that he was pure evil: just had certain unpleasant characteristics.

Thirdly, when you choose to associate yourself with something (incidentally very lucrative during your lifetime) in the media that you know is likely to endure after your death, I think you do keep open the connection whereby you 'live on' in the public eye and thus people will continue to appraise your work and behaviour as presented to them.

It's a privilege to be on TV and in millions of homes across the country; at least a lot of the celebs mentioned in this thread had/have the good sense to act nice when the camera is on, even if they're complete rotters in real life.

DameHelena · 31/10/2022 15:50

Can we not turn this thread into a massive debate?
If you don't like reading a bit of gossip about celebs possibly not being nice, you don't have to hang around here.

I’m glued to this thread because I’m still waiting to hear why the Supervet is the devil.

not that I’d wish what he disclosed last week on anyone. Never.

but that post was before it so I am intrigued.

Pleasecreateausername95 · 31/10/2022 20:58

@FitYeDaeinYeMadRadge Me too!
But, also, what did he disclose last week?

FitYeDaeinYeMadRadge · 31/10/2022 23:55

That he’d been abused as a young child by someone on the farm @Pleasecreateausername95

Now that everyone who would know is dead he felt safe to tell people. It may explain why he is so focused caring for animals.

ILoveMyCat8 · 01/11/2022 00:00

well I can vouch for Gaga, ridiculously lovely, and makes you feel like the only person in the room with her.

Yes, but he still makes my skin crawl.

Yes, but he still makes my skin crawl.

Same here. Couldn't (and still can't watch him.)

Also feel the same as David Jason - possibly more unusual an option but acceptable as he's not dead.

Nobody said he was the devil. But, as already explained in the thread, he does come across to people who have had their pets treated by him as a) arrogant and b) more concerned about the potential kudos to his career of experimental treatments/surgery than whether it’s in the animal’s best interests. That’s not a pleasant trait in someone supposed to consider and advise on the animal’s quality of life at all stages of treatment.
