Smart meter- how much is everyone spending per day?

Just that really, wondering how much everyone is spending on their gas and electricity per day. Obviously knew come October things would increase, ours has pretty much doubled and we haven’t even put our heating on yet. Not sure how we can decrease it any further either.

I’m expecting £10 a day in the winter

rurbane · 10/11/2022 07:09

Averaging about £8 a day now we've got the central heating on. We have the heating on from 7am to 10pm, 18-19°c.

User438651209 · 10/11/2022 07:16

I'm expecting at least £10 a day as we have the heating on quite a lot, probably a lot more than that in Dec to Feb.

£12-13. That's with just under 3 hrs of heating, 2 quick showers, and both of us working from home on computers. 😬 It's a big house but still.

Logoplanter · 10/11/2022 07:46

Our electricity usage is ok - under £4 a day including standing charge. In the summer it was about £2.50 including the standing charge but since October we've been running a dehumidifier for 12 plus hours a day so that and the increase explains the difference.

For us the killer is the gas central heating. It's been on for an hour this morning and our smart meter is reading £2.12. That's taken the temp from 14.8⁰ in the hall to 15.6⁰ 😱 The house is large though - over 2000 square foot and we've got 14 radiators but it's ridiculously expensive and pretty worrying to be frank.

LemonySippet · 10/11/2022 07:50

We're trying to keep it below £8 a day but failing if we put the heating on, it costs over £2 per hour because the system is old and crap. Two of us wfh, and elec costs were much higher in half term with DS's gaming PC on a lot. 4 bed detached.

poshme · 10/11/2022 08:12

@Pootle40 you might want to check your washing machine handbook. 30 min cycles often cost more in electricity.

(Shorter cycle = more movement of the machine to wash the clothes. Longer cycle= more soaking clothes to make them clean which requires less electricity)

My machine has a the option for each program of a quicker cycle which costs more in electricity, or a slower cycle which uses less.

poshme · 10/11/2022 08:13

And we average £3-£3.50 on electricity at the moment.
Not on mains gas so we paid for our heating fuel in January. No idea how much the next tank will cost.

Pootle40 · 10/11/2022 08:16

Thanks @poshme. I did experiment with it and also tried the eco cycle. There wasn't much in it to be honest and it was just a faff waiting 3.5 hours on an eco cycle. I tend to rewear some clothes now to save on washing instead especially as wfh and often indoors only for days at a time.

BordoisAgain · 10/11/2022 08:20

Our smart meter is next to useless as it still hasn't updated to show the actual tariff we are being charged for - so you may want to check so you don't get a nasty surprise like we did.

poshme · 10/11/2022 08:23

@Pootle40 fair enough. 3.5 hours is looong!

Ccickenroast · 10/11/2022 09:53

I live on top of a shop so I'm on commercial standing charge a day takes £4. 20 regardless even if I don't use electric. I'm on a sub metre which is connected to the shop downstairs which is commercial. So the shop is vacent now so I'm being charged the standard order which is &£4 day thats before I've even put the kettle on or turned the heating on 😭

FormerlySpeckledyHen · 10/11/2022 06:28

We don’t have a smart meter but calculate by reading the normal meters.

Do all theses daily rates include the standing charge and VAT?

I forgot to add mine.
Not smart meter but from the last bills for October..

Gas £1.65 a day, no heating on yet
Electricity £3.96 a day

Both including standing charge and VAT. Standard variable tariff.

xogossipgirlxo · 10/11/2022 12:07

5 quid a day until now with heating on for 1-2 hours a day, but from today midnight we will have boiler on constantly now to heat when temperature drops 17.5 at night and 19 during the day, so we shall see. Last Sunday there was 16 degrees in the living room in the morning (because no heating was on at night) and despite heating being on most day, it was freezing, walls were cold etc., so no point doing it anymore, as I paid 7 quid, and it was still bloody cold. I will come and update in few days about what we're paying now.

PaperMonster · 10/11/2022 20:00

Between £3 and £5 - no heating on as yet. Today will be circa £5 as I’m having a bath so had the immersion on for an hour and have the towel rail on. We’re all electric. Am expecting upwards of £15 a day in the very cold weather as normally it’s about £10.

AlwaysLatte · 11/11/2022 00:28

Ours has crept up to £11-12 a day for electricity only (oil for heating/hot water). . Shocking really as when this post first came up it was about £9-10 per day and I thought that was bad enough. Crazy prices.

Brokendaughter · 11/11/2022 00:38

Between £2.50 - £3.00 a day for most days, then about £5.00 a day for the 2 days I do the weekly washing.
That's without the heating being on though & gas is usually less than 50p including the standing charge.

There is almost always someone home, so the kettle, laptops etc.. are on frequently throughout the day, lunch gets cooked etc..

Scottishskifun · 11/11/2022 00:52

£3 a day for both if we are using the wood burner or £5-£6 a day if not and using the heating. Semi detached old cottage. We aren't too bad given we wfh and have 2 under 4s.
But our wood burner can heat the whole house if the doors are all open and I've stopped using the oven we got a ninja foodie instead in the summer which has now paid for itself in saved electricity cost in just a few months!

antipodeancanary · 11/11/2022 01:07

Over £7 for both combined for the first time today. Heating on, one dishwasher cycle, one shower, some hoovering and some hob cooking. It's not that cold and will easily get over £10 in the winter.

fannyfartlet · 11/11/2022 01:08

About a tenner for a 4 bed house and 2 teenagers that spend ages in the bath/shower.

Maverickess · 11/11/2022 01:46

I'm averaging £4.60 between both a day based on my last 30 days usage, that includes days where I'm on 12 hour shifts and so out the house 15 or so and no one else here, one short shower no heating on and the microwave/toaster & kettle once and days where me and DD both home and washing machine & dryer on, heating on, devices on for most of the day, longer shower and a bath etc.

Crazymadchickenlady · 23/11/2022 18:59

About £11-12 a day here. Hopefully will be a bit better after next week when we are getting solar panels fitted.

melanie40 · 25/06/2024 10:26

Its nearly two years since anyone posted on this thread so Lets start it again just out of interest.

When I go to bed around 10.30pm my smart meter is usually around the £1.30 mark per day (that is without using the heating) I live alone in a 2 bed semi. If I were to cook a roast etc in the gas oven then it will display about £1.60 per day.

My monthly bill is about £45-£48
