If we ended up with Johnson vs Starmer at the next election, who would the Red Wall Tory voters go for?

Some commentators are saying the Tories could end up with Johnson back as leader and hence PM, in the very near future. If that was the choice at the next general election, whenever it is (it has to happen by December 2024, I believe), would the Red Wall seats that went Tory last time stick with the Tories, or go back to Labour? And if you're one of those voters, what are your reasons?

It’s called democracy. Everyone has the right to vote as they choose*
And everyone has a right to disagree with Tory voting scum.

You’re going to need some of those voters back though. Corbyn lost many and they could swing back

EngTech · 15/10/2022 19:52

I don’t trust any of them or any party 🙀

I will vote but probably spoil my ballot paper, as is my right

Sad that it has come to this 😔

MrsBennetsPoorNerves · 15/10/2022 19:53

Of course they do. And I would absolutely fight for your right to vote for a shitty right wing party that will trash the lives of the most vulnerable people in our society if you choose to do so, because I do believe in democracy.

That doesn't mean that I won't judge you for the choices that you make.

Whether you like it or not, calling the electorate scum is generally not a vote winner.

Truss won’t be fronting the Tories for a GE, but neither will Angela Raynor.

TheHouseonHauntedHill · 15/10/2022 19:54

Oh dear.

It's hopeless isn't it..

Creasedlinen · 15/10/2022 19:58

Brexit got the red wall voters for the Tories. They won't get them again. Stamer would wipe the floor with Johnson in those areas if there was an election today.

BirmaBrite · 15/10/2022 20:09

I think if it was a toss up between Johnson and Starmer, there might be less of a blood bath for the Conservatives, if they could entice Johnson back from the lucrative after dinner speeches. People seem quite taken in by his faux Wooster like character.

In all honesty, I am not sure they want to win the next election. Or at least nothing they have done recently, convinces me they want another term.

TooBigForMyBoots · 15/10/2022 20:11

ChardonnaysBeastlyCat · 15/10/2022 19:41

Can’t you see that this hurts the very same party you support?

It won't hurt any party I support. And come on, if somebody told you they decided their vote because a randomer was mean to them on the internet, what would you think @ChardonnaysBeastlyCat?

hadtochangetothisone · 15/10/2022 20:13

Let me tell you a story..

I am a criminal investigator for modern slavery ...

When we were in the EU the vast majority of immigrants were from Eastern Europe .. they needed a National Insurance number to be able to work... they were identifiable. We could see where they went. Their 'employers' needed to take them to an interview to get their numbers... we could pick up a (small) percentage of those being exploited...

NOW (thanks to Brexit) we have NO idea... are workers are being bought over from India, Sri Lanka, etc on 'work' visas.. promises the Earth (£15 ph and 40 hrs week) and then end up doing 70 hr week at £3 ph under threat of being sent home if they don't comply ...

This IS the reality of Brexit..

Get shot of the expensive Europeans and get the 'cheap brown people in' ... absolutely does NOT reduce immigration.. just moves the Geography to the less well off.!

hadtochangetothisone · 15/10/2022 20:15

An extraneous are in there .. shouldn't be a question.. it's reality.

Why is this?

It's like this because the media has a very strong grip both in newspapers and social media. Sadly we are quite easily manipulated.

You might want to look at what the Tories are doing to our democracy. The country didn't vote Truss to be PM. And they haven't voted Jeremy Hunt to be PM either.Hmm

And that's before you get into lying to the House and lying to the Queen and illegal prorogation of Parliament that happened under Conservative PM Johnson.

You think something dramatic is going to change the opinion polls?

They'll vote for Starmer.
The Tories have messed up so monumentally that even their own members are saying they're not going to vote for them. They've made the UK a laughing stock globally. They've finally shown their claim to be a safe pair of hands for the economy is bullshit. (It always has been but lots of people don't really understand economics until it physically affects them) The Tories have managed to negatively impact people with savings/pensions/jobs/benefits/businesses ie everyone.

VeniVidiWeeWee · 15/10/2022 20:26

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 15/10/2022 18:34

Also, what about the fact that it was Tory policies that resulted in the closure of the mines and the utter failure to invest in those areas and get really good high-wage jobs to replace mining?

Do a bit of research. Labour closed more mines than the Tories did. And why didn't Labour reopen the ones that closed under Thatcher?

PoundShopPrincess · 15/10/2022 20:27

And if anyone thinks Johnson is the answer to anything (except who is the most self-serving, duplicitous, unprincipled incompetent ever to sit as PM) then they need a long lie down in a dark room. . . or to sober up.

Essentially its going to come down to numbers isn't it ?

The old phrase " You can fool some of the people all of the time, and all of the people some of the time, but you can not fool all of the people all of the time.” was never truer.

I used to think that Johnson was also the answer to which PM was only responsible for the no 10 pot plants, but presumably now Hunt is PM except in name, the same is true of Truss.

"You people voting Tory have caused this. So either stop it. Or have people inform you that you are selfish, ignorant, bastards."

I'm a floating voter. I take my right to vote very seriously and study the issues and personalities involved at the time very carefully. While comments on the internet aren't much of an influence on me, I do take into account the attitude that supporters of each party take towards their fellow citizens, including those they disagree with. I'd rather the country was not run by a party voted in on the basis of hatred.

So, small effect as it is in my case, what I see and hear from a pary's supporters, is a factor in my decision. And, I know from talking to others, that I am not alone. I wonder if the Tory party is grateful for the work you and others on social media are doing for them.

I take it that you never voted Tory whilst Boris Johnson was a leading figure in the party, given that his whole creed was built on inciting hatred of others?

Especially when it’s replicated in the party itself

I get pp are raging etc however Labour has failed to recognise how important the electorate is for the last decade or so when it comes to elections - and have not chosen their leaders well, that is done to them if anger needs to go somewhere.

The better news is they finally seem to have learned with Starmer who actively tries to emulate Blair (quotes etc and Aus Labor with green agenda) - unfortunately there are others who haven’t quite got it hence the insults

Fuck off with your Be kind bullshit. Tory voters put a lying, corrupt, arrogant, incompetent, chaotic bunch of fuckwits into power and they have wrecked the fucking country for all of us.

Instead of whining about mean people on the internet, work out why you fell for it.

MarshaBradyo · 15/10/2022 21:30

I don’t really care if people are apoplectic on here as it’s just a stream of invective at this point, but I think they are missing the failure of Labour leaders to connect with the electorate. Especially the last one.

Labour will finally learn from that with Starmer imo
