If we ended up with Johnson vs Starmer at the next election, who would the Red Wall Tory voters go for?

Some commentators are saying the Tories could end up with Johnson back as leader and hence PM, in the very near future. If that was the choice at the next general election, whenever it is (it has to happen by December 2024, I believe), would the Red Wall seats that went Tory last time stick with the Tories, or go back to Labour? And if you're one of those voters, what are your reasons?

Those who are very focused on women's rights couldn't vote Tory. They fucked us over with the Conservative policy of Self ID as announced by PM Theresa May in 2017. Thanks to the Tories, male rapists and paedophiles are still being put in women's prisons and men are still accessing our single sex spaces. They're hoping we find a jolly old British fudge.

And that's before you get onto the rest of the stuff like refusing to make misogyny a Hate Crime. They've practically decriminalised rape. And of course there's the burden of their economic fuck ups that disproportionately impact women.AngryAngryAngry

Also, what about the fact that it was Tory policies that resulted in the closure of the mines and the utter failure to invest in those areas and get really good high-wage jobs to replace mining?

Tory assault on employment rights and unions. Tories responsible for austerity measures and huge cuts to public spending. I just can't get my head round the fact that this is all brushed aside in the hope that there will be a few less Polish speakers arriving in the UK to do jobs that UK nationals won't or can't do to the same standard, or at any rate for the same wage.

Do you know why they voted Leave, @IntentionalError? Was it in the hope that migration from the EU would be halted? How do they feel that's working out, given the huge staff shortages in the care sector and the NHS?

Yes. Immigration was overwhelmingly the most important reason for the massive Leave majority in that area. If challenged, they would probably make an exception for qualified medical professionals. It was unskilled migrants who they perceived were holding down wages that they were most angry about.

I grew up in a classic Red Wall seat, an ex-mining area which in 2019 returned a Tory MP for the first time in its history. My family still have links with the area, and know plenty of people who voted Leave then Tory for the first time.

Most of them like Boris, and were disgusted by the attempts to overturn the result of the referendum. They also wanted politicians to actually do something about uncontrolled mass immigration. They won’t vote Labour because they believe the party has turned on the working class, and is now for immigrants, posh people from London and students. They might not like the Tories, but they believe Labour despises them and their values.

Those who voted Tory and Leave because of concerns about immigration and housing were conned. The Conservative government are about to increase the cap on visas for seasonal workers to be increased by another 44,000 and extend the length of time they can stay.

I think the Red Wall voters will realise that they were sold a pack of lies about levelling up, and they won't vote Tory again for a generation.

I don't.
The red wall loves Brexit and Johnson is Mr Brexit himself, and he looks like you could have a good laugh with him down the pub. Sadly, this is what matters to voters.

So they didn't and still don't understand how much this country needs immigration? Of course they will understand by now that Brexit is a disaster so that shouldn't be a barrier to voting for anyone but the tories

BrownTableMat · 15/10/2022 18:45

What attempts to overturn the result of the referendum?

MarshaBradyo · 15/10/2022 18:46

Interesting posts. After the huge effort to get rid of him I didn’t think he’d be back, maybe though reading this. Won’t people just associate him with partygate or is that no longer so relevant

I don’t think Truss will be facing a GE in all likelihood

TheHouseonHauntedHill · 15/10/2022 18:48

@IntentionalError

Same.

One half of my family are the tribal, red , labour who still chant, Thatcher, Thatcher the milk snatcher..

I'm a swing voter and it's been astonishing to hear how they cannot 🐻 the curriculum labour party.
The racism around our flag, the George flag and the constant berating of people as thick for voting for brexit when it's been those in poorest housing who suffered the most.

Unfortunately brown's comment to that lady+ Emily thornberry+ Raynor's Tory scum comments ( to life long labour voters who felt they had no choice+ a dollop of "what constitutes being female") means they are also politically homeless.

We need a labour party who is from the red wall, who doesn't care about who people vote for, doesn't judge them and understands most people are good and have the same aims.

We just want functioning basics, hospital help when we need it, rising educational standards, aspirations and support when we fall on hard times.
We do want enough money to be warm and safe and have some life treats.

This utterly shameful and childlike name calling has to stop!

How's that working out for them under the Tories then?

TheHouseonHauntedHill · 15/10/2022 18:51

Marsha, some of my family members are spitting feather's that they dispatched him at such a critical time for our country.

It seemed selfish and inward looking and also broken their own rule's. He had a vote of confidence.

He won.

In real life many people didn't give a crap about party gate.
What they do care about is left without a ship's Captain at one of the most perilous points in our history.

That includes this nuclear sword of Damocles hanging over us.

Johnson didn't leave because of party gate neither him nor 80% of the tories MPs gave a toss about how the public felt about party gate. HIs own MP's got rid of him for covering up a sexual assault perpetrated by one of his male MP's on another male, if it had been a women he would probably still be PM.

I am always amazed at how many people think he was kicked out of office over party gate

No, I agree that they won't let Truss face an election.

Johnson was kicked out for covering up a sexual assault not partygate

TheHouseonHauntedHill · 15/10/2022 18:54

So ken, they voted Tory once, when the choice was JC.
They felt hopeful until COVID hit.

No one wanted JC.

But this vitriol towards them from their traditional party is exactly what drives them away.

TheHouseonHauntedHill · 15/10/2022 18:55

Hells, that was the final Straw.

MrsBennetsPoorNerves · 15/10/2022 18:59

I get that name calling doesn't help, but at the same time, I do think that people have to take some responsibility for how they vote. Those who voted Tory in the last election are responsible for the mess that we are now in, whether they knowingly voted for this shitshow or whether they allowed themselves to be deceived.

MarshaBradyo · 15/10/2022 19:00

TheHouseonHauntedHill · 15/10/2022 18:55

I agree. Look at the polls during partygate he was getting hit hard by it, it went on for ages. Going was the culmination of what preceded, not one thing. If it had just been the last thing I doubt he’d be gone.

As I said, they’re politically homeless. Nobody has said they want to stick with the tories. They just don’t want Labour.

Not wanting Labour means sticking with the Tories, FFS. Have you seen our voting system? 🤔

why do you think name calling is a good idea? It’s one of the things that’s putting voters off Labour, why keep doing it?

SirCharlesRainier · 15/10/2022 19:05

"I can't vote for Labour, they don't represent what they used to anymore." I'm old enough to remember people (often the same people) saying this about Blair AND Corbyn, as well as every other leader.

Probably easier than admitting to themselves just how much the press influences what they think.

conkercollector · 15/10/2022 19:08

Hopefully BJ will realise his life is much easier on the after-dinner circuit and will bugger off the political scene forever. He has a bizarre pull over some voters.

Ah this old gambit.

So there exist people who think that Labour would be the best candidate... but then vote for a different candidate because a stranger said mean things on the internet. Have I got that right @ChardonnaysBeastlyCat ?
